Rate DS Counties in Texas

I would be interested to see if anyone else wants to share their findings. As I have ridden dirt roads around Texas, I have noticed that some counties maintain there dirt roads better than others. Of course, the counties that maintain their roads the least are the most fun to ride.

For instance, Denton County keeps their "dirt" roads freshly graveled and grated at all times. Not very fun. Same can be said for Collin and Cooke counties. However, Jack, Palo Pinto, and Montague counties aren't quite as diligent and the terrain is more interesting. Another surprise was Burleson county in central Texas. A lot of roads had no gravel at all. True dirt roads. Fun !

There is a pattern here. Counties with weaker tax bases (no cities or big towns) have less money to spend on roads. But are there some pleasant surprises out there ? Accessible to major areas we tend to live in (DFW, Austin, Houston, San Antonio).

Of course, the west Texas guys will get to brag the most. Up here north of the DFW area it is next to impossible to find a true dirt road. We have plenty of gravel roads though.

Lotta dirt roads around here. Rain makes them exciting! I am in Walker county and ride in the counties all around me. We have it all: gravel, dirt, clay, sand, pine needles...

If you want government to intervene domestically, you’re a liberal. If you want government to intervene overseas, you’re a conservative. If you want government to intervene everywhere, you’re a moderate. If you don’t want government to intervene anywhere, you’re an extremist. — Joe Sobran

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance. – Murray N. Rothbard

Where politicians flourish, long history has harshly taught us, people and their liberty wither. Where the state is god and the "public interest" worshipped, individual man will be found bleeding upon the altar. - Karl Hess

The accepted wisdom is that without the state, society would collapse into lawlessness and crime. In fact, lawlessness and crime define the very nature of the state and the society organized by it. - Bionic Mosquito

But the myth of the rule of law does more than render the people submissive to state authority; it also turns them into the state's accomplices in the exercise of its power. For people who would ordinarily consider it a great evil to deprive individuals of their rights or oppress politically powerless minority groups will respond with patriotic fervor when these same actions are described as upholding the rule of law. - John Hasnas

Divided down the middle with IH35 and almost all non-paved roads littered with gravel, McLennan county should probably get a poor rating.

Not bad if you are into lighty traveled two lane blacktop though...
