Looks good, glad I didn't buy the HERO 2.

GoPro Hero3 Announced

GoPro has gone and released another camera.
This time, it lost some weight and gained features. Not just the almost-BNG that was the HD Hero2.

It seems they've taken a cue from Apple with their number scheme and named their fourth camera the Hero3.

There are three versions this time around. White, Silver, and Black. Just like Mercedes, you'll want the Black edition.
The details are more indepth, but the basics are this:
White: 5MP/3fps stills, 1080p 30fps
Silver: 11MP/10fps stills, 1080p 30fps
Black: 12MP/30fps stills, 1080p 60fps, includes Wifi Remote.
The black also picks up 4K video at 15fps. If you just HAVE to have 4K.
It will shoot 2.7K at 30fps in either 17:9 cinema or 16:9.
The Black also will let you shoot at WVGA (SD res) in Ultra wide, medium, and narrow FOV. Thus making the roads we ride look like the roads we ride.

For the full list of details and comparison, look here: http://gopro.com/product-comparison-hero3-cameras

They now also offer a touch LCD bacpac.

So, who's gonna give me one for Christmas?

Re: GoPro Hero3 Announced

Looks like the Hero3 doesn't come with the bag of goodies like the previous one do.
The white and silver come with two adhesive mounts (one curved and one flat) and two quick release mounts.
The black both come with the same and a dual pivot arm and the remote.
EDIT: after reading more the silver does not come with the remote only the black

My hero HD (original) came with 4 or 5 adhesive mounts, two quick release mounts, the pivoting arm, and the big suction cup mount.

For me looks like the white edition is the way to go, since I already have plenty of mounts and stuff. And only $200. I wonder if I can get $75-$100 for my Hero HD?

The black shoots in 1440p HD?!? I didn't even know that was a think
Would you even be able to tell on a display shy of a movie theater?

Re: GoPro Hero3 Announced

1440P is actually the same res/in as 1080, but in a 4:3 format instead of 16:9.

For the real res, you'll need to go to 2.7K or 4K.
There are 4K displays out there, but you'll pay upwards fo $10,000 to get one.

BTW, 4K is a direct match for IMAX resolution.

Till they get 4K going at 30+ FPS, it's worthless. IMO

Yeah, that video is making me want about 5-6 Hero3s to play with.

Re: Gopro HERO 3

I may just pick one up. Didn't really feel like getting a 2 since I had the Roams, but this new 3 has got some serious improvement in IQ. The price isn't bad considering it now comes with the wifi remote. Wonder how much processing power that 1440p is gonna take to edit though.

Re: GoPro Hero3 Announced

Heck, smaller, lighter, better IQ then the 2. Not to mention they have even pulled further ahead of Contour. My biggest beef was with the clunky controls on the Hero's, but what he heck, since they're throwing in the remote now, can't even complain about that.

Re: Gopro HERO 3

You gotta get the black to get the remote included.
If you were going to buy the silver, and get the remote ($80), I would definitely make the jump to black

I'm seriously thinking about buying the white and have someone get me the remote for Christmas
You can use the app on all three and the app works as a remote too, with live stream.

Re: Gopro HERO 3

They're defiantly backing off on the included accessories. Thankfully all the ones from prior models still work (for those that have prior models)

I'm trying to convince the wife I need a Black for Christmas. She keeps saying I already have one.
Women, they just don't the shiny/new factor

Re: Gopro HERO 3

Make sure you understand the three versions of HERO 3 are not the same camera. The Black edition is the only one that is an upgrade in quality from the Hero 2.

Look at the specs of the lower priced ones, they are the internals of the two previous Hero and Hero2.

I will probably get the Hero 3 black edition since it has the improved underwater housing for clearer video underwater and the wifi remote AND it is a step up in resolution where as the other two Hero 3 are not.

This is very true. The main advantage of the 3 over the others is that it has Wifi built-in. And, since they priced the White and Silver to match the prior models, there's basically no reason NOT to get the 3.

Unless you can find a smoking deal on one at a retailer, that is.

Re: Gopro HERO 3

The white is the same performance wise as the previous ones, but performance is not one of my complaints.
The white comes with the newer style case, is smaller and lighter, and (this is the big one for me) built in WiFi.
For the Hero HD and HD2 you must get the WiFi backpack, and the Hero HD is not app compatable.

For me, its a question of do I spend $80 on the WiFi backpack, and then $80 on a remote? Or do I try and Sell my Hero HD and buy the Hero3 White (with built in Wifi) and use the app as my remote and later buy the remote.
TO me its worth upgrading at this point now I just need to convince the wife

Re: Gopro HERO 3

I have never had a problem with my HERO and I have used it so many times and in so many fun places, it has paid for itself 100 times over in the videos that we have to show future generations and friends and family. I will always run my Hero somewhere while I run the new Hero 3, the only drawback is doubling my editing times! I will double my late nights cutting and editing.

Yea Jason, I see what you mean, your totally right. It stinks that I have to buy so much more stuff for my Hero to make it similar to a Hero 3. I suspect Gopro knows exactly what they are doing and we are their consumer puppets.

My first Hero has been amazing so no love lost here.

I love my Hero HD, but I think the remote feature would be way cool and the live stream would just be awesome.

Ok, so I've had about 0 interest in shooting video up until this point. But now that Hero3 Black has me all worked up.

It shoots stills too

Most of the time when I used my HD Hero, it was taking still photos every X seconds.
