http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/tra...s/Default.aspx

that link should list the locations in texas.....

I took mine years ago 10+

For the 1st motorcycle safety course, you did not need anything, they supplied the bikes (250) and they had loaner helmets... I took my own helmet....

It was 2 days at the local community college....

looking through the list, I saw a couple places listed in Lufkin....

Over-ankle shoes and long sleeves and pants required. They will provide cotton gloves and helmet, but might as well get your own.

Re: Basic motorcycle safety course ?'s

I teach the BRC up in the Ft. Worth area.

You can definitely use the link ltw9r provided to find a course near you.

You'll need to wear over-the-ankle footwear (boots of some kind are preferred), sturdy long pants (i.e. jeans), a long-sleeve shirt, eye protection (sunglasses) and gloves (any kind are ok, leather is preferred). They should provide you a helmet.

Also dress for the weather. I try to drill it into my students that if there's a chance of rain, bring rain gear. If it's going to be cold, dress for it. Most people in the city up here don't spend a significant amount of time outdoors, so they just don't know how to dress for being outside for 5 hours.

Other than that, have fun!

That's why I owned a helmet before I bought a bike.

The idea of wearing one that had been worn for hours by a LOT of other people was more than unpleasant.

+1 You can pick up a cheap DOT beanie most anywhere. Nice and cool with good ventilation and easy to hear instructions. Good enough for what you'll be doing.

Weather is a lot bigger issue than most people realize. BRCs ride in rain, heat, etc. The riding is stop-and-go, so the breeze from riding can overcool and stopping for instruction can cause overheating. The second day of my BRC started out in the 50s and ended up in the 90s. People were either miserable in the morning or in the afternoon, or both. Be sure to dress in layers.

Don't make the mistake I made of not bringing a hat and sunglasses. Boy was I wrong when I thought "My helmet has a tinted visor". Our day was not excessively hot but I had to pick between sunburn and hot helmet while we were off the bikes talking on the range.

Re: Basic motorcycle safety course ?'s

Those are some really good tips.

The BRC stops for:
- Lightning
- Ice
- Safety issues with the students (heat exhaustion or hypothermia)

"It's uncomfortable" is not a reason to stop class.

Too many people dress inappropriately for the weather. The worst I've seen was chilly rain, and a guy who showed up both days wearing jeans and a hooded sweatshirt. I told the class it was going to rain, but only one student took my advice and bought a rain suit. She stayed warm and dry while everybody else suffered.
