Sunday 2/26/06
When the weather Sunday dawned cool and clear I gave Lonnie a call to see if he was up for a ride. Our last ‘looking for dirt’ trip yielded about 10 miles out of 150. Sunday was quite a bit better, 70 miles out of 150. We found a straight unpaved county road from 562 southeast of Anahuac to 124 south of Winnie.
Gassed up in High Island, still not sure of range. I only put 1 gallon in for 53 miles. MPG goes down fast off road though.
It was exciting to see the Gulf as 124 ran into old 87. The road disappeared very soon to the east. After the recent rain, the sand was firm and easy riding for awhile. A few miles toward PA, was starting to wonder where all these rocks came from. Duh, it’s all that’s left of hwy 87.
The ride was allot rougher and technical than I imagined it would be in the middle 12 miles. At about 16 miles it got better. We didn’t go any farther than the buoy that’s been in all the other write ups.

Fun on the beach.

If I go back I think a check of the tide tables would be a good idea. Low would be more fun.
This was Lonnie’s first sand adventure and he did great.
We both fell once with no damage to bikes or egos. Each was very low speed in the soft stuff. A little momentum is you friend in soft sand.
My stock knobies are about gone. When I put better road tires on we’ll probably be ‘looking for dirt’ in a new area.
