50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
I just got back home last Saturday night from completing a 50CC IBA ride sponsored by the MTF. The finish coincided with the annual IBA Ride-In in Jacksonville, FL.
For those that are curious, the IBA of course is the Iron Butt Association. The 50CC is one of many certified IBA rides such as Saddle Sore 1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours) -- Coast to Coast ride in 50 hours or less is what I successfully completed. As I said, the ride was sponsored by the MTF or Motorcycle Tourer's Forum. This ride was routed along the I8/I10 corridor from San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL. I left out early on the morning of March 6th with plans to complete a BBG1500 (Bun Burner Gold - 1500 miles in 24 hours). I failed completing ride the by about 30 minutes do to a broken left foot peg that happened in the midst of pea soup thick fog, rain and a temperature drop from mid 60's on the desert floor to just above freezing while riding the last 60 or so miles over the mountain pass into San Diego, CA. The 50CC was scheduled to leave from the host hotel in San Diego early Wednesday March 8. As well as the riders doing the 50CC, there were better than twice as many riders completing the second half of the 100CCC (Coast to Coast and back in under 100 hours). The 100CCC riders had left Jacksonville early Monday, March 6th. Since this was sponsored by the MTF, the logistics were taken care of them. The CC & CCC participants didn’t need to worry about the routing, starting or ending fuel stops nor witnesses – all were provided by the MTF. So with everything in place we were ready to head out early Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning about 4:00am we gathered outside the host hotel’s lobby for our motorcycle inspection and witnessing. With that outta the way we were off to the starting fuel stop which will start the clock ticking on the 50 hours. Time started ticking down at 4:20AM and we were off heading East following I8 thru the Southern Californian mountain pass outside San Diego down to the desert floor and Yuma, AZ. On the way thru the mountains we encountered some strong gusty winds, dense fog, rain and temperatures were in the low forties. As we topped the mountains, the sun was beginning to rise and by the time we were onto the desert floor the sun was well above the eastern horizon and the temperatures were up to a nice warm 55 degrees. With that it was just holding a steady pace east. West of Tucson I8 merges onto I10 and we kept on rollin’ East. Late in the afternoon as we approached Deming, NM we could see dust clouds whirling across the interstate. We soon hit our first dust storm with visibility cut to near zero, foreword movement was slowed to a crawl. Years ago I lived thru three days of brown out dust storms, but I’d never driven in, let alone ridden in dust storms. Luckily this lasted only a few miles. As we entered the outskirts of El Paso, Tx we were again clouded in dust but to complicate things, it was rush hour. Fun and joy for all. The cause of the dust storm of course is wind. Luckily the wind was at our back 80% of the time for the first day. At times the gusts were blowing debris along the hiway at speeds faster than we were able to travel. One of the benefits of the high winds was the fuel mileage skyrocketed. Instead of 210 miles per tank, we were getting 260 miles per tank for 800 plus miles. Not long after the I10/I20 intersection east of Van Horn, Tx the sun dropped below the western horizon and we were in the dark again. Entering Ft. Stockton, Tx we spotted the first of many deer for the night. In the median right next to the left lane was a beautiful buck with a nice rack, easily 6 or 8 points. In the distance was could lighting illuminating the clouds in the disstance. Soon the roads were wet but we were still dry. As we came up to Kerrville we decided the weather was closing in and the decision to bail for the night was made. Just over half way to Jacksonville. Seven hours later we topped off our tanks and began the second half of the ride. We hit San Antonio, Tx at morning rush hour but still made pretty good time. About 11:30 we exited the HOV onto I10 East inside loop I610 in Houston. As we came outta Houston we expected the traffic to clear out a little. It didn’t. Traffic was thick and slow moving thru Louisiana. Not until exiting Louisiana did the traffic magically clear. It was relatively uneventful the rest of the way to the predetermined final fuel stop in Jacksonville, Fl. Just as I killed the engine on the bike 5 other riders pulled in. Oddly we were all within 5 minutes of each other, but had seen any of the others till the final fuel stop. We got our time stamped receipt showing we’d completed the ride in less than the allotted time. We quickly went down to the beach and collected sand and water from the Atlantic Ocean. We then ran over to our hotel and crashed till mid morning and then went out and met the other riders as well as the others that showed up for the IBA Ride-In. Below are some stats. 50CC Time: 43:11 Miles: 2451 Fuel: 71.2 gal. Stops: 13 Avg. Tank: 5.48 gal. Avg. MPG: 34.42 Total Trip Miles: 5037 Fuel: 139.27 gal. Stops: 25 Avg. Tank: 5.57 gal. Avg. MPG: 36.16

Congrats! That is quite an achievement!
I have yet to even try an SS-1000.

Coast-to-coast on a 50cc bike is truly impressive!
Seriously, that's what I thought until I got down into the meat of your post. It's certainly an accomplishment in terms of the fortitude and determination it requires, but I just...don't...get the attraction of traveling for hours on end down the interstate. |

It is a logistical challenge. You have to be efficient with your time. It takes planning. Kind if a Zen no wasted effort thing

Congratulations Timbo!!! 5,000 miles in a week! Yowza!
I hope you got this IBA stuff out of your system now. You are very lucky the strong winds in AZ & NM were at your back. The other way around could have resulted in up to 3 more fuel stops, plus sand-blasted your shield making West Texas night driving much more dangerous. In my humble opinion that stretch of MadMax wasteland between San Diego and Fredricksburg is best viewed through a window from 35,000 feet.

Re: 50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
It really isn't the ride. Believe me, seeing miles and miles of desert at night sux. Not many LD riders like the ride, it's the planning of the route, the time management and the huge sense of accomplishmnet at the end when the ride was successfully and completed. The elation that it's over and I DID IT! The cross country ride is just like going to the corner store to top off your tank, but on a much grander scale.
![]() As Tourmeister mentioned, it's a zen kinda thing. I looked at it as a bunch of 200 mile rides. I didn't worry about anything but getting to the next fuel stop effeciantly and getting it completed in a timely manor.

My Helmet is off to you Tim.....
I would love to give it a try, but would not like to take that much time off work for it I guess. Other wise I would not be whining I would be riding. Congratulations ! Thanks for sharing.

Re: 50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
NOT everyone in JAX was there for the 50CC or 100CCC. There were several hundred riders there for the IBA Ride-In dinner. Many of the attendees were on their way home from Daytona Bike Week.
1) The V-Strom/Chopper: The chopper was a project the V-Stom rider had just completed. It was a custom frame using a 400 maybe a 500 Nija engine and front end. The guy was proud of it and wanted to show it off as well as the towing capabilities of the V-Stom. Nether bike nore the rider was doing the 50CC this year. He was only there for the IBA Ride-In. 2) It's NOT and RT-P, it's just painted that way. The ower is a paraplegic who suffers/ed from polio. 3) The Beemer in the Hummer never touched the ground. 4) Sandstorm.... Spamstorm. That weren't nuttin! 5) Desert. Desert. And more stinkin' DESERT!!!

Re: 50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
I was wanting to be there for the IBA dinner, but also to see you guys rolling in from the 50CC/100CCC. I did my 50CC with the MTF last year, so was hoping to shoot the breeze with Jason, Alan, and the gang. However, my stomach decided not to participate, and would have spontaneous and sudden urge to evacuate all contents. The thought of dealing with that while on a 17 hour bike ride was not encouraging. Finally got to start eating again on Monday.
I've been needing to ride something fierce for a couple of weeks now. I'm hoping to make it up here before long. |

I'll show my ignorance. What are the box contraptions on most of the rear racks? Coffee injectors?

Re: 50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
Those are auxiliary fuel tanks. Most are IBA spec, 3 to 5 gallon depending on the MC's main tank -- the two together must NOT be more than 11 gallons total.
No. No bladder relief tank.... but some of the guys do have Piss Tubs. You really want to know who those riders are so you can stay clear. Here's and example: ![]() See it dangling there by the side cover. And here's a sad site. A BMW not rolling along the hiway. The bike never touched the ground the entire time we were there. I decided it was more for a conversation piece than to ride. ![]() If you wanna see a few more images, go to this thread: http://invisionfree.com/forums/ETMot...showtopic=3816

Re: 50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
In the "old days" nursing homes used a thing called a "Texas Catheter". These would be handy for Xtreme LD rides.
Basically, it slips over your pener so you don't have to stop for bathroom breaks. ![]() I did a Google search to find this. In doing so I learned there is such a thing as "medical fetish". I never knew. http://www.erosboutique.org/store/me..._Code=medical2 My grandmother ordered me to "Learn something new every day". Mission Accomplished Grammy! |

Re: 50CC San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL
I'm picturin' myself folded up on an NSR50 for 2400 miles, hmmm, no thanks. After an hour of intense endurance racing, I practically fall off one.

Either way ... bathroom breaks are one of the few luxuries I permit myself on endurance rides. I do everything else on the bike, I can dismount for a 5 minute proper bio-brake when needed. |
