Austin Texas Hill Country Dual Sport Day Trips

Ride to the James River......08182012

It never ceases to amaze me of the mechanical and riding skills of dual sport riders.

Although, after reading this ride report……..some of you may be in disbelief…….but as a True Native Texan, I can honestly say……..it is all true…….…and that ain’t braggin’….…..especially since there are photos to prove it. Some of you may call this a Tall Tale……..and that’s your right……but here in Texas…….Tall Tales are legends.

It all started as a routine ride, rlcanon, Lamar568, GlockPointer and I met up at Backwoods in Bee Cave Texas……Kickstands went up at 9:05 a.m.

We were planning to meet Mudclod* and Infidel** in Eckert, Texas on Hwy 16, at 10:45 a.m.

*Mudclod was trailering from Killeen to Llano and would be riding south on HWY 16 to meet us.

**Infidel was riding from San Antonio and would be riding north on HWY 16 to meet us.

We rode West out FM962 to CR301 to Hwy 281 (North)….then left on CR307 ( a nice CR that starts off paved then becomes dirt, then becomes paved again before intersecting with FM1323). After turning right onto FM1323, we rode for a few miles until we came to a place where we had some fun at on the last ride.

After checking the official ride clock (a Timex strapped to GlockPointer crossbar pad), and seeing that it was only 10:25 a.m., we determined that there was enough time to play around a little before we were supposed to meet up with Mudclod and Infidel at 10:45 a.m.

DSC05695.jpg

We got back to the business of heading down FM1323 into Willow City (BTW, Harry’s is for sale. Any investor types out there could buy this. It makes for a great watering hole on the Loop. I know it needs an approved septic system, that’s what got them shut down, and maybe more) and then over to Eckert.

We arrived at 10:50 a.m., a respectable 5 minutes late, but seeing that Mudclod and Infidel were nowhere in sight…….we were on time.

I pulled out my phone and had a message from both Mudclod……… and Infidel…………

Mudclod: “Dude…….. :dude: …....it’s raining really hard here in Llano and has been raining non-stop for an hour.” :storm: I’ll keep the rain up north so that y’all can have a rain free ride***.

***And rain free it was ‘til we crossed north of the wet/dry boundary later on in the ride……which was no fault of Mudclods.

Infidel: “I’m at I-10 and HWY 87……..I’ll be there in 30 minutes and I’m riding like the wind.****

****And ride like the wind he did because I received the text message at 10:55 a.m., and when Infidel met up with us it was 11:00 a.m.

DSC05697.jpg

After saying our Howdy Do’s and Whuz Up’s……. ……..and after Infidel telling us about his upcoming adventure riding he will be doing on the back roads and trials in Arkansas*****………..we were on our way to the Doss Country Store for lunch……………….and for desert……….we were planning to have a good heapin’ helpin’ of crossing the James River.

We were only a few minutes and a few miles into this portion of the ride, when as luck would have it, Infidel verbally expressed his sincere displeasure……i.e., words that the mods may not allow…..but words you normally hear on cable TV……and therefore the ride came to an abrupt stop.

After rlcanon’s astute observation……..Infidel had a broken clutch cable.

Many folks might see this as an opportunity to pack it up and go home……..but noooooo………not this crew.

Out came the tools from my handy dandy farm implement owner’s manual tube……and lo and behold………rlcanon has a freakin’ spare clutch cable……….yes folks……..it was pure magic…..it may not have been the OEM cable for a DR650 (Infidels bike)…….but it was a clutch cable nonetheless……..and a Barnett High Quality clutch cable at that!!!!!!!!!!!

*****Better it happen here with tools and a spare cable than the backwoods of Arkansas……which led everyone in the group to agree that a spare clutch cable and a spare throttle cable are probably good things to have with you on your bike while riding.

DSC05698.jpg

DSC05699.jpg

DSC05700.jpg

DSC05701.jpg

DSC05702.jpg

Once the roadside repairs where complete…….and the clutch cable adjustment was “better than stock”…………as stated by Infidel himself………we were off again……..and hungry.

But just outside Doss the ride came to another abrupt stop………but a worthwhile stop it was. As you see, we had to take pics of one of the coolest signs in Texas…..and as far as I’ve seen….these signs only exist on this road………….

DSC05704.jpg

First things first after arriving at the Doss Country Store………we all topped off our tanks and then went in to the Doss Country Store for some cold beverages and some grub……….and mighty fine grub it is. :eat2:

DSC05705.jpg

Even though I was somewhat pressed for time to be back at the house by 5:30 p.m. ……… (it was already 2:00 p.m. when we finished eating. You can do the math if you want to, but true “numbers” people have already figured it out)…………..to let the little pup out of her kennel to go outside…..and the big pup out of the house so he could go outside as well******……….I was severely pressured by my peers to ride on to the James River.

However, I am not one to succumb to peer pressure….and therefore I refuse to be subjected to such nonsense no matter how harsh it is.

So I did what any upstanding respectable Texan would do…….I owned up to my obligations and responsibilities.

Now......if you have been paying attention to this Tall Tale………..the title of which is……all together now......”Ride to the James River”…….so “Ride to the James River” we did!!!!!!!!!! :rider:

******Upon arriving home at 9:15 p.m. the dogs were real troopers……… not poopers…….for being in the kennel and house for over 12 hours. Good thing I have kennel trained them to hold their…….uuuhhhhhhh…..what’s a word the mods will let me use…….oh there it is……”bodily functions” for up to 16 hours.

Now folks……… this is where the story gets exciting…… …..the part you have all been waiting for……:popcorn: ..…and believe me…………the very part most of you, if not all of you, will not believe……….yes that’s right…….you will not believe this next part.

This fine outstanding group of men, with untold talents and skills proceeded to ride the James River crossing backwards……..yes……..backwards…….Some folks may tell you that only 2 out of the 5 riders dropped their bikes in the river. But actually, 2 of the guys just layed their bikes down in the river to wash them.

Now if you don’t believe me that we rode backwards across the James River……the proof is in the pics below.

As a side note……while taking these pics, a local rancher stopped his pickup next to me at the rivers edge. We exchanged greetings and then his exact words were “I love a good comedy show”…..in which I responded……..”And this is the perfect place for it.” Isn’t it nice to know that there are people that are not in such a hurry that they can’t enjoy a little laughter and humor in life……..especially at the expense of others, like ourselves?

Lamar568 washing his bike in the river when he got about half way across……then proceeded to keep riding backwards to the other bank of the river……..

After seeing how clean Lamar568’s bike was….rlcanon decided he would wash his bike too…..sorry Robert, I didn’t get any photos of your clean bike. :(

Like myself………Infidel and GlockPointer decided to leave the dirt on their bikes……..because it adds character……..

Then………..to get back to the other side………and not wanting to show-off…..we rode forward across the river………..you know…………like everyone else.

So on down the road a piece we stopped briefly at a cool little place where the water flows across the road and into a little canyon draw. The water crossing was pretty much dry…..but the draw the water flowed into was really awesome and had some awesome natural habitat……….

DSC05932.jpg

DSC05934.jpg

There is a confession that I feel I must make to my riding compadres……After riding James River Rd and few other paved and un-paved roads on the way back home……..Remember when we turned from CR110, left onto FM2323, and we rode past CR112 and turned around at CR106 where I said I went the wrong way??????…….I didn’t really go the wrong direction…..I just wanted to see some of the other CR’s we usually ride………Just wanted to get that off my chest……and keep this Tall Tale true to form. :trust:

So once we were back on track, after our impromptu excursion mentioned above, we turned onto Keese Rd/CR111 and the rain came down. Yes, as Infidel mentioned earlier……there was some lighting……and ok….a couple of them were a few hundred (maybe a couple hundred) yards away…….I knew we would be out of it eventually……..I just didn’t know when and where eventually would be.

We gassed up again in Freds’burg where Infidel headed back to SA and the rest of us decided to take 290 east…….rlcanon would take it all the way to Austin………and Lamar568, GlockPointer and I would take it to Johnson City/FM2766.

Lamar568, GlockPointer and I went down FM2766 and it eventually becomes Fitzhugh Rd in Hays County……where “eventually” it finally stopped raining and the rest of the roads on our way home were dry…………. (well……we found where eventually is)

So here’s to ya guys……………. :chug: :chug: :chug: ………….another mighty fine ride….and that will be truly a legend in our own minds.

Infidel, I'm really glad you didn't have to ride in the stuff we went through......it was wet, windy, dark and cold......which makes everything else we did easy and fun.

    Now ^^^THAT'S^^^ a ride report!! I've got a lot to learn from you guys. Heck, I can barely duckwalk a bike backwards, not to mention riding one through a danged river! :eek2: And where'd y'all get those cool reverses anyway? I want one for me! :trust: I wonder, do they come in red? :ponder:

If you look closely you can tell how abruptly my bike swaps from left to right, all I could do to keep shiney side up.
I also like how you gloss over the torrents of rain that accompanied us much of the way home. A true endurance test right there. And we didn't seek shelter or even slow down!

It's on youtube but I can only find it by going into my account, perhaps RMan could school me a bit here. How do we find the video? I "shared" it on Fakebook, how do I link it here?
I don't use Facebook, ... but I found it nevertheless.

My camera isn't waterproof.....or even water resistant......and if there are no pics.........it didn't happen......but we know it did.

Pics of what, the rain? We have pics of everything else.
Rman comes through! Strange you could find it but I could'nt. There's ol' BikeJones right up the middle lane with no major probs. The Katoom put up a fight but we got her thru.About a gallon of water came out of Lamars airbox, then started right up.

09222012 ATHCDSDT First Ride of Awesome (Autumn)

What started as an awesome first day of Autumn ended as an awesome first day of Autumn.

We met at the usual place, Backwoods, in Bee Cave Texas, just east of the intersection of St. Hwy. 71 West and RR620 South.

Dave-d and Kelly showed up on Kelly’s BMW with the side hack, and big_papa_nuts, Andy showed up on his KLR.

007_zps1aacadcc.jpg

What we did not expect was the Police escort……….

006_zps1aa485f5.jpg

005_zps78efbf96.jpg

Ok……it wasn’t really a Police escort, the alarm for Backwoods went off when they opened the store and they (one marked and one unmarked car) came to check it out. All was good.

We rode to the dirt and began to seek which creek crossings were wet and which ones were dry. Many of them were dry but there were still a half dozen or so that were wet…….and slippery.

We started the dirt portion of the ride on CR110A, then 308 and 315.

Here comes Dave and Kelly on CR315 crossing Sandy Creek………

008_zps4cc88fc7.jpg

There goes Dave and Kelly crossing Sandy Creek………

009_zpsc2f5e60b.jpg

Somewhere along this portion of the ride, while negotiating a wet creek crossing…..and at the very end of the crossing.......Andy showed us all how to do a 180^ turn on his bike and gently lay the bike down so it could rest for a while because it was two tired.

Andy didn’t need any rest so he stood there watching his bike.

Since I had already made it across the creek, and was only a few feet away, I came over to help Andy wake up his bike.

Therein lies one of my personal problems………I still need to work on taking more photos when the ride stops……..and/or………stopping the ride to take more photos.

So as the saying goes…….if there are no pics…….it didn’t happen.

……………However…………Dave had a video camera on his helmet and may have caught this.

CR315 took us over to Hwy 16 where we turned left (south), and then turned right onto CR113 and 112 to 2323 (south). From there we turned right onto CR109/110 and a couple of hundred yards down the road at the split, we continued on CR110. This took us to Loyal Valley, 2242, and then to Hwy 87.

We proceeded south on Hwy 87 and turned right onto Threadgill Ranch Road. I do not usually notice this when we have ridden this road before, but having the hack behind us, I thinking of Dave sitting in the hack, I noticed that this is not your typical dirt road…..it’s a heck of a lot more bumpy. It is more of a rock road with some dirt. The rocks are 4 inches to 8 inches long and about 2 inches thick and are embedded in the dirt. A couple of them became dislodged from the road and I could feel my back tire kick over a few inches when this would happen.

From Threadgill Ranch Road we turned left on to Jack Rabbit Rd., which is paved. While riding down Jack Rabbit Rd. I noticed something shiny glistening in the distance. As I got closer I could tell it was a motorcycle parked on the side of the road. As I got really close, I noticed the skid marks and gouges in the pavement. When I stopped at the bike (a cruiser {Viper}), I noticed the damage to the bike, including a hole in the gas tank. There were no other riders around, but I honked my horn a couple of time in the event they were resting under a tree off the side of the road and needed some help. Judging the look of oil on the road, it appeared to be at least a day or two old. It was not a fresh oil spill. After discussing the possible causes of the accident we proceeded along Jack Rabbit Rd. to Langes Mill Rd. and we turned left. This took us to 648 where we turned right and headed into Doss.
When we got into Doss, we turned right onto 783 and went to the Doss Country Store for some petro and some grub.

Something to take note of, when eating at the Doss Country Store, be sure to tell them how you want your burger cooked, i.e., well, medium well, well done etc…etc… because if you don’t tell them, they will serve it to you rare/medium rare.

Nonetheless………they make a great tasting burger……even if it moo’s when you take the first bite.

From Doss we headed south on 783 and took some of the paved roads, Doss Spring Creek, Grenwelge and Pecan Creek over to Old Mason Rd.

From Old Mason Dave and Kelly said their goodbye’s and headed over to Hwy 87 and into Fred’sburg to take Hwy 290 and then MOPAC back to Pflugerville.

Andy and I continued on our trek easterly along the small county roads, mostly paved and a couple of them dirt.

While riding along Lower Crabapple Rd. we decided to check out a dead end dirt road. Not only did the dirt road catch my eye…..it was more like the “Dead End” sign that caught my eye.

Dead End roads, especially dead end "dirt" roads can have some pretty cool scenerey and other stuff to see.

It was a nice narrow twisty dirt road with a lot of shade.

We even found “Boot Hill” along the way.

011_zps75d45f6b.jpg

After riding through Eckert and then Willow City, we worked our way to Althaus-Davis and eventually to 962 which becomes Hamilton Pool Rd.

We turned right onto Hwy 71 and headed back into Bee Cave where Andy and I said our goodbyes.

Andy told me that he too was ready to take a nap. I suggested he wait until he got home.

As we all know, Andy’s bike will sleep well when it gets home as it was already two tired from earlier in the ride.

Thanks for the great ride Kelly, Dave and Andy.

It was really cool having the hack out there in the dirt. I am sure there were folks that enjoyed seeing your rig because they are not that common.

Y'all take care and come along for another ride sometime,
Britt

10072012 ATHCDSDT....Deemed "The Chilly Ride"

Sunday was another mighty fine ride…….and mighty cold if I might add.

It seems as though the temperature never got above 50^ until after 3:00pm. Even though it was noticeably warmer…..it was still kinda chilly.

The chili weather didn’t hold any of these dual sport riders back as it was a sizeable turnout of 9 riders from 250cc bikes to a big ole KTM 950 Adventure.

MotoTex’s (John) bike…….

006.jpg

Hank took us from the Y in Oak Hill to his place off RM1826 to ride some trails. There was a nice mix of open and wooded trails with a few slightly ledgey hill climbs mixed in.

012.jpg

Glockpointers bike taking a nap after climbing one of the ledges......

010.jpg

All of the trails were “big bike” friendly as the KTM Adventurer had no troubles at all……….until something punctured the rear tire.

As it goes any well equipped rider, John had everything he needed and others were more than willing to offer help and additional tools.

Although John tried to break the bead of the rear tire with his own weight…..it just wasn’t enough. So we put the tire under my side stand and let the weight of my bike and two of us pushing down on it break the bead.

013.jpg

John and John work on John’s flat……..

014.jpg

016.jpg

After leaving Hank’s place we took RM1826 to Darden Hill Rd./CR162 to Sawyer Ranch Rd./CR164 to a short stretch of 290 West to Trautwein Rd./CR185 to Fitzhugh Rd./CR101 and on down to South Oak Forest and then Bell Springs Rd./CR169 to work our way to Hamilton Pool Rd./FM3238.

After a short ride on Hamilton Pool Rd. we turned right to check out Stagecoach Ranch Rd. Smiley left us at that point as he was running out of ride time……and had ridden this road the day before.

Stagecoach Ranch Rd. is an interesting paved road with its dirt road sidekick Stagecoach Ranch Loop. There are some dirt dead end roads that branch off of these two roads that we did not take. We will save those for another riding adventure.

From there the chilly ride took us across the Pedernales River and over to CR301. From there it was a few miles north up HWY 281 to top of the gas tanks, then south again on Hwy 281 to CR307 and over to 1323, to 1320 to Hwy 290 West.

Another short ride west on 290 took us to RR1 and a nice mellow ride that parallels the Pedernales River and goes through the LBJ State Park with a small Buffalo or Bison herd in one of the pastures.

From RR1 we took a left onto RR1623 and crossed Hwy 290 to eat lunch at Lindig’s Café.

018.jpg

After a filling lunch and warming up a bit, and saying farewell to soda pop (Rob) and txbikeguy (Ben), we went west on 290 and turned right onto Gellermann Ln. then proceeded to RR2721 where we turned right and an immediate left (otherwise known as a “jog”) onto Klein-Ahrens Rd…….where I must admit I slightly missed the turn…..but I did point it out to the other riders….. …in my attempt to begin a u-turn I had a near miss with Glockpointer. All was good as no contact was made.

After riding Klein-Ahrens Rd. for a few miles we turned right onto Wahmund-Ahrens Rd. Although these roads are paved, I could see this particular spot as a premier place to take a break in the summer…..or just about any time of the year actually.

Proceeding north along Wahmund-Ahrens Rd., we eventually turned right onto RR1631, then another right onto FM1323 and then left onto one of my favorites, Althaus-Davis Rd., which is a paved twisty road that turns into a dirt twisty road, CR310, both with their share of creek crossings, although usually dry.

And of course Althaus-Davis/CR310 eventually becomes FR3347 (yes folks…..FR for Farm Road……I’ve been calling an FM for Farm to Market by mistake). From FR3347 you can turn onto either CR309 or CR310A to ride some nice dirt roads with a mix of dry and wet, improved (concrete) and un-improved (natural surface {my favorite}) creek crossings.

Only one (improved) creek crossing had a little water and this particular creek crossing always seems to try to get someone sideways and it usually succeeds. It was big-papa-nuts turn to get sideways and he road it out like a champion….keeping the shiny side up.

This ride was all inclusive of the typical ride through Click Texas and little break at the corral. Usually our breaks are under nice shade trees…….well……we were looking for as much sun and heat as possible so this happened to be the best place to stop.

Here is a shot of Paul’s (dull ax) and Andy’s (big_papa_nuts) KLR’s in the foreground.......

019.jpg

No ride along CR315 is complete without riding across this un-improved crossing of Sandy Creek. I have never seen water flowing down this section of the creek…….and I don’t think I ever do. It could get quite challenging.

Riders staged for the crossing (and paparazzi {Glockpointer})………..

026.jpg

We rode on down CR315 a ways more after Sandy Creek….but not all the way to Hwy 16.

Shortly after turning around Andy said he had to switch over to reserve…..which I thought was kind of odd since we filled up only 50 to 60 miles ago……and…..Andy had one of the largest gas tanks on the ride.

So as we are heading back…..MotoTex mentions that he is going to take CR310 over to Hwy 71 to head home.

Since I was not sure of the gas stops along 71 in that area, I was taking Andy and the rest of the crew down CR310A, FR3347 and RR962 to Hwy 281 South into Round Mountain so Andy could get some gas.

Well, as luck (good and/or bad) would have it…..Andy ran out of gas right at the intersection of CR310 and CR310A. He laid the KLR on its side to access the special reserve but the bike would not start.

Luckily, Glockpointer had an FTD (fuel transfer device) on board in which to transfer gas from his and my gas tanks.....

027.jpg

028.jpg

After about a six pack, of petro, Andy started the KLR…..however it seemed to be running rough and rich.

But it was running so on down the road we went.

Once we got to the Shell station in Round Mountain Andy filled the KLR with gas.

Paul (dull ax) decided to take Hwy 281 south to HWY 290 and head home as he was running out of ride time.

It was then that I noticed Andy’s KLR was leaking gas as he was revving the engine trying to get the idle to smooth out.

He cut the engine and pulled a plug from one of the drain/vent hoses and a mixture of oil and muddy Bastrop Trail water came out.

029.jpg

Maybe after taking in a six pack of Shiner petro the KLR just needed to take a leak.

But no…..it was something more serious than that…..it appeared that a float bowl was stuck and causing the extra gas leak out.

With safety concerns of the KLR leaking gas on the rear tire while riding curvy highways, and if he plugged the vent hose, the KLR was running rough and Andy had concerns of it doing further damage to the bike, he called his roommate Ben, txbikeguy, who had already left the ride after we ate lunch, to bring the truck and pick him up at the Shell in Round Mountain.

This is the first time that we had to leave a man in the field. Hopefully it will be the last time too.

Nonetheless it was another fun ride even if the temps didn’t get to the mid 60’s like they were supposed to.

A special thanks to Hank for sharing his trails with us. The trails were fun and it was the warmest I was all day.

Thanks again everyone for the ride.

Let's do it again!
Britt

You missed your calling man, you should write a dual sport book.

The sandy creek video captured all the sliding and roosting better than stills. And the vid at Hanks was pretty good too. Funny when I ran into Andy and fell over!

I have the Sandy Creek vid up on the tube but I don't know how to bring it here. (hint hint, I'm looking at you Rman)

I do.

Well I thought that's what I did. :lol2: I even tried using YouTube's embed code. Whatever, it's working now.

I 'go advanced', paste it in, and them preview it. It works most of the time.(?) Embed code does not work at all on this site.

12/23/2012.........Today's ride was a good one overall. We decided to go to Castell for lunch.

Glockpointer, Cagiva85, tireman, neoxaero and I headed out to the Hill Country to meet up with Infidel who was riding up from San Antonio.

DSC06424_zpsc71f241d.jpg

DSC06423_zpsca57f926.jpg

As dry as it has been there was water running in some of the creek crossings.

DSC06426_zps2cf09db2.jpg

neoxaero had a sore knee as a result but the bike was ok.

The natural creek crossings tend to be more fun because they don't have the slime factor like the concrete creek crossings do......tireman shows us how fun they can be.......

Even the big creek crossing at Sandy Creek had a little water.....it is usually bone dry even during the wetter seasons.

Glockpointer took a 90^ turn a little too hot and became intimate with a steel fence. Damage done, smashed/twisted ankle, foot peg and hand guard..........

I had a blast....me and tireman worked our way east back to 281 through some of the best dirt in the area...almost ran out of gas...drank a few brewskis...had some lighting issues...but we made it to hwy 71 and then parted ways...i managed to dodge the deer down 281, froze my tail off but made it home to a warm couch and a hot meal....it was a good day...

Here is my foot today. I rubbed some dirt on it and its almost like new.:jammin::dude::chug::eat3::bbq:
