Roger(not Uncle) just left the Fort Worth area at 12:40 pm Wednesday the rain has moved on, he'll have a Great tail wind, he has the KLR revved up 5300 rpm heading to Coleman as i write, I will leave the Abilene area in another hour or so to cross his path in Coleman, then we ride to Brady onto Base camp Junction.
Abilene this morning had a very good rain with sleet and my back steps were covered in ice 32 degress and thirty mph North wind, the rain has delayed our departure, but it's 44 now, so we are heading south, we took the extra days off, so better make the best of it and ride on.

The James Crossing is an animal unto itself and is a different league than a traditional texas slimed cement river pad.

James River is not on this year's routing. It isn't much more than a shallow/moderate depth riverstone crossing with a trick - many riders are lured to the shale shelf in the mistaken believe it is more even and in shallower waters but alas! It is this snot-slimed trap that has befallen many riders.

I suck off-road compared to some of the Baja 1000-level types here but I was able to ride across the James River with Richard in advance of a bunch of riders on a past TAR.

Just like slick cement crossings, throttle control is valuable as is "feathering" the clutch. Whack on the power on purpose or by accident, and down you go.

The added skill on the James River, like all river crossings with a natural stone base, is to have a loose grip on the bars and don't be afraid to let the front wander.

There are water crossings on this weekends route but none are like the James River.

Leave your ego at home and if you want to walk your bike across any and all crossings, that's fine. I may do it. It beats going down, getting hurt, drowning your bike, and ruining your day.

I'm not heading for Junction until Friday morning. Richard sent me the TAC route and I'm going to try and be at the water crossing north of Castell in time to photograph the TAC riders. So if you see two guys to the side parked, a red BMW GSA and a black GSA, then don't worry, that is just me. That will be a dry crossing, but if timing is right we should all be hitting that around 10:30am. Wave as you go by.

We are going not going to get on the TAC route in reverse at that point (we will about an hour later though) so we don't have to worry about you guys blasting around a corner...or thinking we are lost riders. Have fun.

I still have a bed available at the HQ motel for Friday night and possibly for Sat (I know, it is getting late but someone might want to break camp and hotel it one night.)

Never mind.....looks like Timbercat may be well enough to come after all and since he cancelled his room, he is now at my mercy. I think the price just went up (especially if I have to risk coming down with whatever his wife gave him!)

Garmin touch screen is acting up (again. They sent me a refurbished unit after last years TAC).
May have to find a group to tag along with!
I'm riding a DRZ with RogerDe riding a 950 Super Enduro.

Looking good. The Doc gave me a steroid shot yesterday and I'm much better this morning. This is my first time having that shot so was glad they warned me about not getting much sleep last night. Got maybe 3 hours.

That was a Viagra shot. See you doctor again.

Wait, never mind. You have another hour

Please share technique for crossing the mighty James River!

I am 2/1 but with 0 style :rider:

No Stephanie and Andrew / me and MsBehave either. I didn't get in till 9 tonight, and I'm more than 4 hours away. Not a Red-Bull-an-hour keeps me up for days kid anymore either. We'll see y'all next time...many at Rusty's bbq. Y'all have fun and ride safe.

I still have my reservations at Sunday House in Kerrville for Friday and Dos Rios for Saturday...these are the official race event hotels. Text me 361 646 6663 and I'll release 'em to you, hopefully at the event discounts. Otherwise I'll cancel both about mid-Friday afternoon.

Weather perfect

BBQ lunch at Coopers Llano

Break in Luckenbach

Overnight in Kerrville

Never had more fun riding dirt in my life.

Best day on a dirt bike in History

If Jesus was riding he would be on a KTM 500 too. :lol2:

Someone please watch Bob. I am really worried that his smile during the ride tomorrow is going to get so big as to blind oncoming traffic. :rider:

Glad you are having a great time, Mr. Pilot. :thumb:

Weather was perfect, although a bit chilly before 10:00. There has been some awesome pavement put on some of the twisted sisters. The mid to northern portion of FM 336 is super-smooth. Hackberry Rd was great. Tacos in Leakey at Mama Chloe's great. Everything was pretty much...great!

Great ride had a blast had a good group to ride with,Thank's to Dan, Tommy & Ben good riding buddies I eat a lil hill country dust, sugar free, took a water sample on one of the river croossings water was wet, didnt get hurt the bike was OK ,all was Fantatic Awesome Ride....Ride On:rider:

My first TAR ride was great, had an awesome time doing the Challenge. Met some new friends and great riders in Dale and Woody on day 1. I couldn't keep up with those guys but they were gracious companions. I also got to witness Bob do an awesome wheelie in the middle of Cypress Creek on his new ktm Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo...I know, I know but it really did happen and it was way cool. And I was unfortunately a victim of one of the super slick concrete stream crossings on cypress creek, went down hard and banged up the ankle and shoulder. :eek2:Thought I was done, but thanks to copious amounts of advil, I was able to finish the course. Fantastic riding! Thanks to Richard and Connie for all the hard work in organizing this event, thanks to Uncle for providing rescue support ( I think he had to rescue someone and their bike on day 2) and thanks to John Thompson and Jack for riding sweep both days on the challenge course. Also thanks to everyone who was there. It was a blast!:rider:
Now that I have written all this, it occurs to me that we should maybe be posting this on the "after the ride thread" that Richard started?

Thanks very much to Richard, Connie and Uncle for several years worth of great fun, great rides, and learning experiences. Hope to see you and ride with you in the future, plus all old and new friends from TAR.

Richard Gibbens did an awesome job for us in two ways.

He hosted the event, which we who attended most sincerely appreciate.

Secondly, he wrote the book that we followed to travel trails we never would have travelled down if he had not told us about them.

A vignette, I rode CR214, east to west, with all it's gates and at the last latched one I was asked by a lovely "senior" lady whose house right by the gate, if I was strong. She needed a bale of hay lifted on to her ATV. I said I was. I pulled my helmet off, she said, "You're not young". LOL

Thank you, Richard, for inviting us to the ride.

Best ride in a long long long long time (Maybe ever).
Great folks, route, food & riding.

Snuck an extra 120 mile ride in this morning... had to back track down Old Junction Rd. to find my Spot 2. Had it in track mode so family could track me. Transponded all night in the same location. GPS led me directly to the coordinates and there it was!

Thanks Richard!
