Around the Bend & Lone Star Reunion Feb 28 - Mar 3, 2019

As I mentioned to anyone who would listen, I am taking Thursday off next year. One day of riding just didn’t satisfy! (I just couldn’t get my lazy donkey butt there any earlier than noon on Friday.)

Really enjoyed riding to Top of the World Saturday, here are some pix from that day and other assorted Terlingua-ness.

Met up with Mike (Webnel) and Keith (Kman) on the way to TOTW and enjoyed a leisurely break with them at the top.

Great folks and rides! Here’s a small glimpse of the two full day rides we did. Day one was a 210+ mile challenge loop and then more subdued 100+ mile northeast of Terlingua ride. At least 90+% dirt both days and free of any issues [emoji1783].

Yes, greener, mo flowers and although the heat bothered some, cool mornings and afternoon highs in the 80's was perfect to me.

I arrived at 10 am after an overnight 80mph jaunt from Phoenix. Missing my meetup at breakfast with gourdhead and jt, I drove to the motor inn and asked a random couple guys if they wanted to ride. Turned out later Mike is actually gourdhead! A small crew of us rode a nice short N/S county road one way trip. Then patio and friends at the High Sierra for the fajita dinner meeting up with the rest of the twtex group.

Friday bluebonnets were out and the newb group headed to tackle River Road around 9, Jae and Tiff and John Joyce and I hung back and had fabulous Posado Milagro breakfast. Heading out at 1100 we followed the group to Santa Elena Canyon, River Road, and by the time we hit Mariscal Mine at 2pm we were at the front of the group. Nevlec looked tired and hot waiting in the beating sun for his group. Kudos to the ride guides for their dedication leading this. Miles of soft gravel meant hard miles, hot bodies, difficult climbs, and some frustrating moments. We hiked the mine and arrived at Rio Grande at 245. Only two falls and great riding by Jae and John and we felt fresh.

On a sad note, 30 or so guatemalans were stranded in the desert, lost, out of food and water. One border agent collected the group. Sad to see, but such is the state of north america.

My bunkmates Curtis, Sean, Adam, and Mark rode the desert challenge route and we crossed paths at RGV. At 3pm we bid them adieu and decided to make a cross border run. 2 hrs was inconceivable so we hustled, set timers, and ran down to the office. By 330 we were boated and kia'd over and seated at Jose Falcon's surprisingly nice restaurant. Crossed paths with JP on the walk over. Seated next to Mark Peterson (of Southwest Superbikes in Dallas, who always has nice ds bikes for sale) and the 6 strong ktm crew. Quick, good, overprices USD lunch and we crossed back by 4:30. Boquillas is nice. We'll make an overnight excursion to canoe the canyon, drink tequila, and stay in town next year. Also, did ya'll know there is a hot spring pool near boquillas? Details to come in 2020.

We hit up the hot springs on the US side with Mark and crew and made a just at sunset run to Terlingua for drinks on the porch.

FRriday night was the usual front porch > starlight > la kiva drill, made fun by our buddy Sergio's bachelor party joining in the fun. They had heard rumors of the springs so at a mind numbing midnight to 4 am we returned to the east side of the park for a 2 hour soak and catching up.

Saturday was a lazy day. North and south county road with my good buddies and bunkmates, checking up on my property, stumbling on JP and son Ben at the 118 intersection. I hadn't seen JP since the wincing agonising 2 days he suffered in Mexico with a dislocated shoulder. JP is 90%. We headed to the Chili Pepper for an afternoon snack with JP and Ben...oops. Then the banquet followed by Starlight. Great fast fun riding, good memories, quality people.

Sunday, Curtis (RockyRaccoon) and I trailered with Mark, Sean, and Adam to the state park. C and I continued on 2 wheels to OJ to cancel his permit. Ice cream on the now quiet square and Pollo Loco on the new highway cutthru says Old Mexico is giving way to the new era of the automobile. Starting at the border. OJ might as well be Texas.

We rode back to Terlingua via beautiful fm170 and 70 miles of twisties. Stopped at a few small park loops, explired strange rocks with small natural arches, and took a cat nap after hiking in to closed canyon. A bit too kong of a cat nap as our last 15 miles the cold front hit and we froze our booties off. Dinner at the Starlight and a habdfull of Margharitas and we were warm, minds, spirits, and full bellies.

Our SP crew didn't fare so well. Two tickets, a broken down bike in the SP, and inly turkey sammiches at midnight to cap off a hard day. Adam's 790 can't come soon enough!

Monday the cold was strong. If you missed it be glad. We had an amazing February weather window. Just packing car at 9 am was bone chilling. Leaving Terlingua the mountains were snow dusted. Passing thru alpine everything facing east was iced over. Buildings in alpine were still dropping icicles at noontime. Great trip! Many thanks to JT and Rich and TARA and twtex for the organization. Tickets in Big Bend Ranch SP? Were they, by any chance, cited by Sgt Doter?

Same ticket writer also helped extract the bike and played good cop all evening. Not sure of his name, but Subcomm had good things to say. I guess the takeaway is keep your speed down on park entrance road until after you see the officer?

Wow! It would have been amazing to have the newbie ride in this temp!

First year I did this ride I was on a KLR (which I rode in from Dallas). Heading out early Sunday morning it was below freezing & I did not have adequate gear for this eventuality. Border Patrol stopped me at the check point & asked if I was a US citizen. I looked at him incredulously and asked him "Are you bloody stupid? No Mexican is going to be out riding a motorcycle at 6am in 30 degree weather, they're much too smart for that."

And off I rode...
