I missed out on a ride with some other TWT peeps on Saturday. Sunday was nice, and warmer, so I decided to head out on my GS. Initially, I wandered South along FM 1791 towards FM 149, hitting some of my favorite back roads. Most were in pretty good condition despite the recent "blizzard". I got back on 1791 and cut through the SHNF from the West side trail head. I dropped out off Stubblefield Lake Rd., on FM 1375 and decided to bop over to the trail head at Kelly's Pond to see who I might find. I ran into a group of guys that had been doing trail maintenance and visited with them briefly. After that, I cruised East on 1375 over Lake Conroe to check out the trail head back behind the Gulf Coast Trades Center. No riders were there, but there appeared to be numerous hikers. The road only gets fun North of the trail head. Normally, this would take me to FM 1374, but as I was zipping along, I noticed that one of the little side roads that is usually closed was open. I have not seen it open at all in the last few years. So I decided to check it out. It was obvious it had not seen any traffic or had any maintenance in a long time, which made it fun and a bit nasty in a few places where it had been eroded. Near the end of it, I came up behind some jeeps that were picking their way through the overhanging branches. This little road drops out on FM 1374 just North of where the main road drops out on 1374. I cruised on down to New Waverly, then headed NE out of town on 1375 to Hardy Bottom Rd. Most of this road is just a single lane country road, but a section of it runs through a low area for Winders Bayou and can flood if it has been raining. The water was up to the road and everything around it was flooded like a swamp, but I had no issues getting through it. Near the end of that section a LOT of new gravel had been put down recently. It was that white stuff, maybe 1/2" to 3/4" sized aggregate, nice and crunchy, and a bit deep in places, but still no problem. I head out to Four Natch Road then cut NE thru the SHNF hitting some fun side roads, then Jenkins and Willow Springs over to FM 946, where I cut back NW to Felix Curie Rd. The group route came this way and no one mentioned having any issues with mud, so I figured it would be fine. IF muddy, it can be a slick nightmare! Fortunately, it gets enough car/truck traffic now because of property sales that dry ruts form pretty quick compared to the days when it was all deer lease property instead of homes. I briefly thought about heading across Lake Livingston and trying to run the group's route up to Groveton, but I was pressed for time and that would take me too far out. So I headed across US 190 and worked my way up to FM 980 and then Old Staley Rd., which is a nice little dirt/gravel road that cuts of a boring stretch of 980. I decided to run North to Trinty and run the old Trinlady road, which has a lot of sand and can be a real hoot when it is super dry. It was mostly damp, with a few mud holes, but still fun. At Hwy 19, I had hoped to cut West and start working my way back toward I-45, but I was turned around by some dead end roads that did not used to be dead ends
So I eventually gave up and headed North to Lovelady. I headed West out of town on some sandy county roads toward FM 3151. There were a LOT of tree tops down in the road, apparently from the high winds that came through the area on Friday. I didn't have any trouble getting through as the locals had already cleared everything well enough for me to pass. I needed to be over on US 75 near FM 1696 by 6:00pm and it wasn't looking good. My only way to get back across the Trinity river was head back down through Huntsville or try to get to Hwy 21. I tried running some county roads towards FM 3275 because the map showed them going through. They don't. They were fun, but they eventually brought be back to FM 230, where I had to pick up FM 2915 and run that over to 3275. Where those two roads meet, there is a good stretch of unpaved road that used to be really deep sand. It seems they have been dumping lots of gravel on it over the years since I last rode through here so it was rough but easily passable. I've been losing a LOT of time. I haul down Hwy 21 to Midway, head South on FM 247 past the Ferguson Unit, and cut East on FM 2989 as the sun fades and sets the clouds along the horizon on fire. Now I am worried about deer... However, I make it to my destination, 30 minutes late, but actually right on time
I just missed the upfront stuff
As soon as the sun dropped, so did the temp, from a nice 65 F to 45 F in the space of 5-10 minutes! It was nice to get out and ride. I don't get to do it nearly as much as I used to...
