Nah, the closest place is Alpine and that is about 80 miles away. My knee is doing much better today, but is still pretty purple and tender. Joint movement is fine, and it bears weight just fine. So I've got an appointment with my doc on Monday morning. I figure if I can walk on it just fine, then it's not too bad.:sun:

The riders meeting is over with and everyone is on their way. Lots of bikes, tons of people milling around, and lots of stories to overhear. I'd love to stay and post more, but Rachel and I are about to be off on a drive through the park. Later!

I couldn't help it. I lost momentum and then I got skeered. Next thing, I had to deploy my outriggers.

Ugly, yes, but it kept me up on both wheels. :-P
 
Here is my condensed contribution to the ride report. I did some hiking, lots of biking, eating good food, enjoyed sparkling conversation with good friends. My KLR spouted a gasoline geyser due to a combination of excess engine heat boiling the gas in the tank and a plugged vent that would not let pressure escape. Three of us dealt with junk in the carbs presumably from bad gas at the same station. Had one flat from seven thorns (was given the Indian name of Ed Seven Thorns for that). Teaches me to let the tire touch a cholla while turning the bike around. One friend's riding ended too soon with a hard bounce and a swollen knee.

The poor KLR came back with almost a thousand miles added to the odometer, 600 plus of which were off pavement. The rear shock is pretty much blown and the chain and sprockets are toast.

Update on this issue.... I just got off the phone with the regional VP of the parent company that runs the Lodge. It was not a corporate decision, but rather a local one. The RVP agrees that it makes no sense and will discuss it with the general manager that made the decision to not serve cobble on the patio any more. maybe next time we can enjoy our cobbler on the patio.

The Maiden Voyage of the Good Ship Dizzer​

I've been wanting a more dirt-worthy bike for quite a while. As much as I like my 2008 KLR its limitations in dirt are more than I prefer. Well, life presented me with the opportunity to pick up a reasonably priced 2001 DRZ400 on the Saturday prior to Uncle's Around the Bend.

Once the deal was struck, the race was on to get the bike ready in time to take to Big Bend. I spent most of the day Sunday in bike prep mode. I didn't have enough time to do everything to the bike that I wanted, but I did get enough done that I believed the bike was ready for the type of riding I was anticipating.

With bags packed and bikes loaded, Wednesday afternoon my wife Connie, Milton Otto, and I rolled out of Austin, headed to Uncle's place for 3 days of dual sport riding. This is my story of the maiden voyage of the Dizzer, my new-to-me 2001 DRZ400.

Thursday

The first test of the bike was the infamous Chispa Road. I've been wanting to ride this road for several years but just hadn't been able to do so for various reasons. Well, today was the day.

Milton, Rick M, BigDon, and I met up at 7 a.m. with a plan to add Chispa Rd to our adventure resume.
