Austin Texas Hill Country Dual Sport Day Trips

Sunday 09152013

It was a good day to ride.........sadly for John B and Infidel....it was a bad day for mechanicals...........leaking radiator and dead battery respectively.

So Glockpointer and I headed west for some dirt roads that needed riding.

20130915_085057_zps6893aac8.jpg

We get to Round Mountain and I received Infidels text that he is backing out due to a dead battery. He was wanting to do some creek crossing.......we rode plenty of creek crossing but they were all dry.

20130915_102731_zps58c65e0d.jpg

So we're riding along our usual dirty route and cross Sandy Creek on CR315 and what do we see in one of our break areas..........two guys on Harleys takin a break. They were looking for routes and bars for a poker run. Needless to say..........CR315 will not be one of the routes.

20130915_111131_zps9faeb23a.jpg

When we got to CR109/CR110......instead of taking 109 and 105 to Castell we took 110 to Loyal Valley and the Keyserville (sp) Rd. to Castell. Both of these roads are excelent dirt roads with creek crossings....although they were bone dry.

Hey Slowoldguy.........I found the beef......:eat:

Out of all the bright new shiny chrome Harleys at Castell..........this one looked the best......all the rest were just.........well..........plain.

Like old times = good times.......Glockpointer and I had a great ride....no mishaps........although I am getting good at (or bad at) going into sharp turns a little too hot......no mechanicals......although I had this on my mind the whole time.....no it's not a worn tire.....it's a heavy duty tube protector. :trust:

The Dirty Harry Ride, Sat. 10/19/2013......Great turn out.......great weather........and a great ride.......

B00001, j_blankenship and Cykel at Backwoods......

083_zps1800eb30.jpg

ThomasM and onefishtwofish showed up a few minutes later......chiricahua showed up just after ThomasM and onefishtwofish topped off their tanks in Bee Cave.

085_zps9826b672.jpg

Our usual stop at the Shell in Round Mountain was supposed to get us two more riders from SA, rawhide and Infidel.......rawhide posted up that he couldn't make it and since I am without a cel phone at the moment we haven't heard from Infidel at that point.

We ended up waiting a few minutes more at the Shell station to fix a flat on chiricahua's KLR.........

086_zps7bd85169.jpg

The dirt roads were in pretty good shape and there were not many wet creek crossings on the pre-Harry's ride. Only CR310 had a two flows over the same crossing at Sandy Creek.

We took a short break near the top of the Willow City Loop to take in the views..........

We stopped at Harry's on the Loop a little after noon to grab some lunch. Harry's doesn't typically serve food but since it was their grand opening with the new owners they contracted a food sales trailer that had good burgers and BBQ.

While at Harry's.......some old iron showed up........the Harvest Classic was going on over in Luckenbach so it was good to see these bikes doing what they were meant to do.....ride the twisties on the Willow City Loop

Harry's has a neighbor just down RM1323 that is a Vietnam Vet and Air Force War Bird......his annual reunion was held at the same time and we received a special treat of a War Bird air show.....I kick myself for taking photos instead of video as they were doing loops and other fancy flying manuevers.......Thanks to all you Vets out there!!!!! :patriot: :thumb: :chug:

Cykel, chiricahua and B00001 took off after our stop at Harry's, so j_blankenship, onefishtwofish, ThomasM and myself continued to make the Dirty Harry Ride even dirtier.

The post-Harry's ride on CR110, Keyserville Rd. CR105 and CR109 yielded quite a few wet crossings.......with the everyone keeping the shiney side up.

Thanks again everyone for the great ride......

Smiley, Cykel, B00001 and I made it to El Rodeo in Lampasas promptly at 10am…….

After a quick pit stop we were off again with slowoldguy and Gene…..

002_zpsc454a02d.jpg

Bump gate Road…….slowoldguy demonstrates how it’s done while Smiley waits for the gate to open……

003_zps285af6d3.jpg

Smiley and B00001 go through the bump gate that slowoldguy opened…….

004_zps261638af.jpg

After slowoldguy, smiley and B00001 entered the gate I waited for the gate to close so I could bump it open…….more of a push really…….place your front tire against the far right side of the gate and twist the throttle just enough so that your bike pushes the gate open…….and ride on through……as the gate opens, other riders can enter the left side and/or behind the person that opened the gate……just don’t hesitate and get caught by the gate.

Beasts at the exotic game ranch…….(I kind of flew by the zebras and the camel but these guys were right at the fence when I first saw them)……..

slowoldguy and KilLeR crossing the Colorado……….looks about like the same line I took......plenty of large rocks and deep pockets of water…….exciting!!!

No riders dropped their bike during this crossing…….or for the entire day!

After eating lunch in San Saba…..Smiley and I took Hwy 16 to Llano and then CR315. The two Sandy Creek water crossings on CR315 were nice and wet…….

At FM3347 Smiley went on towards Sandy and back around to Round Mountain…..I took FM3347 on to 972 to Round Mountain.

Gene and slowoldguy………thanks a ton for showing us some really sweet dirt roads and awesome scenery.

Thanks Rman.......and I'm really glad you're feelin better.

I've been using the 8 megapixel setting instead of the 5 megapixel setting. I get clearer pics but they end up being kinda large on the forum.

You think I ought change it back to 5 or leave it at 8?

 They fit my 17" laptop beautifully. :trust: ;-) Dang, I gotta get out there sometime! :rider: Doing much better now, I can finally kickstart the 440 without giving myself a hernia. :lol2:

Awsome yall im still a bit new to this forum but i will have to watch for the next ride. looks like every one is having a good time. plz keep me posted.

Sorry for neglecting the "After the Ride".

There have been a couple of group and a few solo rides that didn't make it to this thread due to my procrastination.

As Rocky would say (from the Bullwinkle Show)..........."Now here's something you'll really enjoy!!!"

We had a great group of riders.......and put in some good mileage.

Myself, dualsportvet and Nero took low speed falls on a slimey Sandy Creek crossing.

bikejones creek crash...........(5:50 to the end is the really exciting part!)

Nero creek crash....well....sort of....he crashed before I could get the camera turned back on and didn't want to ask him to do again for the camera.

dualsportvet creek crash........(tireman makes it through on his KTM without a hitch)

For the record.....we did the same creek crossing on the way back and we all three conquered it!!! (this video is out of context with the rest of the story......but is inserted here as a foot note to the three crashes above.)

Thomas took an unexpected detour from the road, CR113, that he was able to walk away from. His bike was not as lucky.

Sharp Dressed Tow Truck Driver......

Tyler and chiricahua turned around to come back to where Thomas left the road and a deer jumped in front of chiricahua causing him to go down on the pavement. He had some pain and road rash and his bike had a few new scratches.

At the end of the day it's a good thing that everyone was up and walking.

Some folks slabbed it back home. Tireman, dualsportvet, Nero and myself backtracked the dirt roads and some pavement back to Marble Falls. Here is a short video of the part of the return trip with a couple of creek crossing.
