Re: Sat Mornin Ride? 5/27? Any one? Sugar Land/Houston Riders?
Here's the ride report:
After all the postings were made about Saturday’s ride, I ,of course, change my mind about the meeting spot and decide to meet up with R1150R (Ken) at the intersection of 1488 and Hwy 362. Marko(Mark) decides he too will meet us there. To further the confusion I start PMing them and Ken and I decide to meet at 149 and 1488, I know there is something at that corner Ken thinks it’s a fruit stand and turns out he is correct. I’ve been copying Marko on the PM’s but haven’t heard so not sure if he is in on the 149 meetup at 8:00a.
I arrive at the Fruit Stand around 7:40a. but pull up across the street onto a large dirt shoulder.
I live fairly close to here and didn’t realize how quickly I’d get here, so I just wait…. I have a feeling that Ken is a very prompt person and here he comes early, just as I expected.
So he pulls up next to my f650 introductions are made and we wait to see if Marko is going to show up here or at 362.
We waited until 8:05 and started suiting up for the ride over to 362, it won’t take very long to get there and I think we are there by 8:15 ish I didn’t think there would be anything there for us to turn in to, but turns out there was a building and a gravel parking lot slightly to the North, so we pull in there. Shortly thereafter another bike shows up, is it Marko? Nope in rolls Ernesto on his beautiful red Ducati!
Another round of introductions and soon I spot another bike at the corner of 362.
Ah, it is Marko. It seems I confused him a bit with the pm’s, but hey, he’s not the only one. Besides, he said he'd be here at 8:30 and here he is, so everything’s good.
Now for the rest of the contingent and here they roll in.
It is at this point I must apologize, there were just too many names to remember and I have forgotten which name goes to which face but for a few. Well in some cases a name can go with ‘something else’ here Panos dismounts his Gixxer as gracefully as any ballerina I’ve ever seen……ahem……ladies for your viewing pleasure…...
Ok, enough with the nonsense…we are ready to go. I announce that I like to be positioned well in the back of the pack (remember…old and infirm) so I am placed one before our sweeper who’s riding a beautiful yellow R1150gs (sorry, too many names for my old grey matter (Eric?)). Of course I am lagging behind the group because 1) I like to look at the scenery… and 2) everytime I see a gravel road I have to look to see where it goes. At one point I almost pulled over to ask my compatriate on the gs if he wanted to ditch the pavement goers and do some real exploring, but I restrain myself, this is after all a ROAD trip. We traveled up 362 which has some nice hills before you reach 105 then East on 105 toward Navasota to the Shell station – powder break for me (one cup of coffee, one 8oz juice and most of one water bottle while waiting for contingent) you get the picture. Then Hwy 6 to 3090.
It seems there was a little mishap on 3090 which I missed, but I heard through the grapevine that Blackwidow (Moe) must have had a little gs envy and decided to have a go in the dirt to see how he liked it. Luckily his Ninja thought better of this and found its way back to the pavement without too much fuss. We swooped our way around to Hwy 244 and back to 149 and eventually found our way back to Kings Café. My escort and I were separated from the group back on 149 by an “it’s Saturday and I gotta move furniture in my pickup truck guy” so we were hoping we would see them at Kings and after a quick circle, there they were.
Here is Moe pretending to be talking to his friends while secretly checking out this Victory cruiser in the parking lot. You could save a lot of dinero on insurance if you go over to the dark side, Moe!
Here are some of the other guys, I will embarrass myself again and say the only names I remember in this picture are Ernesto, Mark and Ken, the rest of you will have to identify yourselves so I can enter you in my database. (just kidding)
Lunch at Kings is always an adventure. Here Moe decides that he needs to create a ‘bad boy’ image for himself and designates this as his “LiveWrong” bracelet and wears it for the remainder of the ride.
……just kidding…..Ken made the mistake of ordering the ‘Whole’ order of onion rings, not knowing the onions in Montgomery were of the mutant variety and you could build a decent size house out of the plate which arrived. I inadvertently forgot to shoot a pic of the Mountain of Rings, so we settled on the above.
After lunch, some of us weren’t done yet so after saying our goodbyes to some, headed off back up to Navasota way again. Across to 1097, then Northeast on roads I can't remember and haven’t learned how to do a track on my gps yet, so I have no idea what town this actually is. I pull over onto the shoulder to get a picture because the street is lined with flags and it is soo pretty, I can’t let it go by. So I am just sitting there fumbling with my camera and the guys are just looking at me like “what is SHE DOING…then they see the camera and I try to snap a few without looking through the view finder.
You can see some of the flags, I notice later this shop with the Open flag has a little sign which reads “Needful Stuff” a little too StephenKingesque for me as I remember a movie with a similar name.
So as not to hold up the group, I try a shot while riding and get some of the street in this one:
By this time, the weather was getting sunnier and the temps were really rising. We stop at a gas station to fill up and some of the guys literally water down. Sorry no pics. So we start the journey back into town on some very nice roads with some wonderful sweepers. We eventually wind our way back to 1488 and 362 to the same little parking lot in which we met.
We say our goodbyes and we go our separate ways. I decided to go around back behind that little road which curved around from 362 to 1488 that Ken and I noticed on the gps earlier. It turned out to be a delightful little single paved road which led to a wonderful little cemetery, that I did not get a picture of. This road wound and snaked until it met back up with 1488 and was a real treat to ride although way too short.
Like I said before, it was really getting hot, so I took 1488 all the way to 2978 to avoid 149, what a mistake. After passing the intersection of 149 I rode right into 10 minutes of a cold, torrential rain shower which soaked me completely. Thankfully I rode out of it, then into another smaller shower on 2978 where I was stuck behind an 18 wheeler transporting earth moving equipment. By the time I got home, my pants were dry, but my tshirt was still wet, this surprises me as I was wearing a mesh jacket. Of course, my lawn was bone dry.
Most of you know that my husband had to camp with Scouts this weekend, what you don’t know is this is my birthday weekend and this ride was the nicest present I could have asked for. We won’t be mentioning ages here, but Panos, I could be your Mother, and Moe…well we won’t even go there…….
Thank you Moe for organizing the ride and to everyone else. It was certainly a pleasure meeting all of you and hope to do it again sometime.
