Re: 2015 Uncle's Around the Bend, Desert, ADV, and Dos y Dos Challenges Mar 19 - 22 2

I had such a great time meeting so many great guys! Can't wait until next year - I think my wife knew I had the time of my life (at least of the decade?) by the stories I told (un-embellished I might add!)

I think the weather only added to the event.

I hope to see a lot of you guys well before next year's event.

Mud and Flowers in Big Bend .... WOW ... I love the pics and wish I could have been there.

Re: 2015 Uncle's Around the Bend, Desert, ADV, and Dos y Dos Challenges Mar 19 - 22 2

I love BB. I had hoped to be there, but ended up driving to Fort Stockton to take care of some unfinished business. So close, yet so far. Next year. At least I can ride vicariously through y'all's pics and videos.

I will be making a trip later this spring, so I'd love to get the routes.

A sincere thank you to Uncle for inviting and welcoming us, like family, to the desert the last 8 years. And to Richard for organizing this passionately tied friend group into a real deal. To Everett for his tremendous help in organizing, planning, executing, and finishing this experience. To JT and the sweep team for bringing us home safe. And to the numerous locals who provided all we needed for making life in the desert "good".

I've never, ever, seen a day as beautiful as Saturday, March 21st. We had morning rain in the ghost town, breaking sunshine near Panther Junction. Sunshine and blue skies over a muddy flower strewn river road. Impending doom while jacking a ural sidecar rig up to clear muddy fenders. Incredible rain, high winds, and significant hail at Rio Grande Village. And then, WOW, the most amazing late afternoon reflective and colorful Chisos mountain views. The kind you see once in a lifetime. Takes your breath away.

So many wonderful, interesting, exciting, and accomplished people attended this event. All walks of life, ages, political viewpoints, riding ability. All perfectly unique and relevant. It is a privilege to host an event with folks of this caliber attending.

I'm sure there are more stories and thousands of pictures to come. But first, there are bags to unpack, loved ones to hug, careers or retirements to attend to, and bikes and gear that we surely must need to wash.

Buy don't dillydally. We wanna see all your pics and vids!!!

Peter

Great event and thanks to all who made it come together. Surely enjoyed meeting and riding with so many folks.

Friday was an easy day. I just rode up South County road to Hen Egg etc. to the 118 pavement and then turned around and came back the same way. That's actually a nice little ride. Crossing Terlingua creek was fun. This was before the Challenge riders came through. Somebody had been out there floggin that road in serious fashion. :pirate:

Rained all night Friday so Saturday was a no-go for me and the dirt. :tears: Drove the truck over to OJ and had lunch. Somehow missed the deluge going but saw several flooded road crossings and many washed over rocks in the road coming back. :eek2: Envied the folks who rode that day...between the showers and hail. :hail:

This was my very first trip to Big Bend. The Dos y Dos went from wishful joke-like thought to reality so there was no way I was going to miss seeing other people who actually rode TW200s. On Friday, I drove for what seemed like 900 hours straight in rain. It looked like this.

Fortunately, it stopped raining for nearly 20 minutes after Fort Stockton to clear the way for...

fog.

It cleared up just as the sun was setting somewhere and I got my first glimpse of ... wow...
20150320_193402.jpg

After a good night's sleep listening to rain (and more rain), we met for breakfast and the riders meeting at the Starlight Theater. We paid close attention to the information presented.
20150321_073352.jpg

My rider coach in the BRC hammered into my head that I should always ride within my limits. Most of the time, I don't pay attention to that until I am Wile E. Coyote past the end of the cliff. I figured, despite our fearless leader's concern (and I quote: "I fear for you with those tires..."), no guts, no glory.

Off we went for the first leg of the Dos y Dos! And then there was this...
20150321_104603.jpg

I skated through the first million miles (about 100 yards I think) and water crossing and realized I was not going to do very well. I was pretty sure I could use Q's tires as an excuse but mostly I think it was me. Some encouragement from Peter and Everett allowed me to push on. Ahead a few hundred yards, a meeting of Tdubs was being held. Mostly due to the discovery that Tdub front fenders are perfectly designed to store mud. I'm sure this is a feature.

Peter suggested I trade bikes with Everett. At first, I wasn't so sure but a quick test (and assurance from Peter I probably couldn't break it) got me on his far more friendly 150 and Everett got to know Q. I've never really known my bike to be so eager to have his rear tire take the lead. Everett lives in my pantheon of stars for getting Q to mind his manners on what turned out to be racing slicks in the chunky peanut butter of River Road.

20150321_111223.jpg

That'll wash.

20150321_114155.jpg

Hello, Mr. Golden Sun!

Peter's opinion of road conditions ahead ("I don't see this getting any more fun...") helped with a group-ish decision to return to Rio Grande Village. I traded bikes back with Everett and we commenced to desludging.

Message_1426959009886.jpg

There was a deep puddle across the parking lot so all our bikes jumped in for a bath until a guy in a golf cart yelled at us and told us we couldn't do that. He told us to go to the dump station up the road. The one with the sign that says "No Vehicle Washing Allowed." :brainsnap

Long story short... I got to accompany The Tennessee Connection up Old Ore Road, around Boquillas Overlook and up Boquillas Crossing, and got back to Rio Grande Village in time to load Q, get three of four straps on him and get pummeled with rain and hail. I hope Johnny will share the pic of his Ural's hail-filled tub.

This was an amazing experience. I am grateful to the group of friendly folks, the superhero leaders/sweeps/organizers extraordinaire, and will never forget one of the best days of my life. Thanks, everyone!!!

Are they allowing people back and forth on Boquillas Crossing yet?!?!

"Ahead a few hundred yards, a meeting of Tdubs was being held. Mostly due to the discovery that Tdub front fenders are perfectly designed to store mud. I'm sure this is a feature.'

Kat, you have a wonderful sense of humor, take great pictures, and now have the best ever Terlingua stories to share around a campfire.

By the way, a TDub's seat height is 31.1" and a Yamaha XT 250 is 31.9".

Wildhorse, at Gate5 on Hwy 118 before you get to Study Butte. Get cabin 1 as it's on a hill with the best views.
I hear they book up fast we were fortunate to get it this time as someone else had cancelled.

SOLO where was this cabin? Looks like a place I'd like to take the little lady some time :sun:

Howdy Kat, great RR! Cool pic, looks like snow. Wish I could've made it.

Next year! Some new shoes and a different front fender for his vacation - that ought to help Q out next year :-D

Great pictures Kat. And despite the difficulties of the day, I am so happy you enjoyed the ride! For a first timer on mud you are a natural. Don't worry too much about Q's shoes or fender. I've never seen the desert wet before this trip. And there is always plenty to see on pavement.

Everett took the lions share of our photos. For those that don't know Everett:

When you watch 3 bikes go through deep water, then a sidecar pop a full unintentional wheelie, dry hump a stop sign without a scratch, and get it all cleaned up just in the nick of time...you can't stop laughing...

Ride to Chisos Basin. The clouds started to roll in, temps dropped 15* and threat of rain loomed above. Not much rain in this video, but don't despair next video has rain and a big bike going up a non paved, loose hill.

Ride back to the cabin. CDC and I got the timing perfect, without having to sync watches! Now, up the rocky hill we go.
Oh, and we did find the hidden reverse on the BMW K1600GT!

Re: 2015 Uncle's Around the Bend, Desert, ADV, and Dos y Dos Challenges Mar 19 - 22 2

.
First time using gps and a new ram mount that was awesome. The desert challenge for my fuel error got me 227 miles in 2 hours and 27 minutes at 41.6 mph avg. the course was very similar to the SoCal desert with cobbles, sand, rock steps and a tiny amount of mud.

That is a very impressive time! Rider trumps bike model/technology etc. again. You spanked all the KTM prima donna in style - KLR.

...I also caught solorider and CDC sneaking out of Terlingua in Alpine on their infamous caravan. The drinking games of the last night took it's toll.
