Desert Sledin Dummies Thumpin Utah

Don't be too hard on yourself regarding being the ride leader. You can have the best riders in the world with the best equipment and preparation and things can still go wrong. It's just a Murphy's Law kind of thing. The thing to remember is you guys did what was necessary to get through a bad situation without freaking out or panicking. THAT is what matters! Even the professionals crash and sometimes are even killed. Living is a dangerous activity. None of us make it out alive :zen:

I saw a twist on this the other day.

"We do these things not because they are easy, but because we thought they would be easy."

And a twist to match this report.

"We do these things not because they are easy, but because KsTeveM told us they'd be easy."

:D

More pichures please.

Ok, back to the story telling. We were working on a regroup of the trip. Licketysplat’s release date from Grand Junction St. Mary’s Hospital was unknown at this point. Ulug and LlanoMano weren’t feeling anymore harder stuff in their immediate future. They were going to break from the group, be ready to get Lickety if needed and find some more dual sporty stuff to ride. Sounded like the right thing for the situation. We had breakfast together in Green River and parted ways. Now it was just me, Grape and Bmullex.

1698100904006.jpeg

Like all things Utah, we had lots of options for our travel today. From here, decided to go south, but first west. What? Why? You’ll see. But first, we had some fun crossing the scrubby desert vs. interstate.

1698100940524.jpeg

Next we started routing into this large canyon. This was the why.

We rolled through pretty quickly and were just enjoying the morning. Flying the drone some and making our way west.

1698101265658.jpeg

Now we headed south to ride in/over the swell. What in the swell? It is a 75 mile by 40 mile anticline of sandstone, shale and limestone that was pushed up a cajillion years ago, known as the San Rafael Swell. Then let millennia’s of floods erode the sedimentary layers and you get this scene.

1698101568065.jpeg

1698102948935.jpeg

We had a plan. I had been communicating with JoeMotocross from ADVrider on our status as we had plans to meet up the day before. We figured out we both knew where a single track trail head was at and the timing looked good to meet this day. So that is what happened, met up with him and his wife HotStuff.

1698101635211.jpeg

Lost a bolt on a kickstand…..repairs made, onward.

1698101591163.jpeg

This was a pretty cool trail. Relatively tame as far as single track.

1698101679070.jpeg

1698101722947.jpeg

Till we got to this spot. Wasn’t awful, we played on it, found some better lines, got er done.

I really enjoyed this section, the right of amount of technical, flowed well, nirvana. And it kept folks on their toes….

Or on their side….or….oh you get it. Below was the worst spot on the trail. JoeMoto cleaned it. Trail climbs to the top left of screen.

1698102337541.jpeg

I was next, didn’t clean it. Wacked my left foot/peg on a baby juniper. Threw me off my line, had to slide back down backwards to regroup. Attempt two, the trail was still pushing me into a groove that led to that dang Danny DeVito tree, snagged me slightly the second time as well but I stayed in it, almost made it, almost looped out. Laid her down to keep from a bad scene. Got a helping hand and manhandled it up. The rest of the crew….they were looking for a work around, Bmullex found it. Much better.

Here is an aerial of that area so you understand the swell better. We just rode across that dude, dude.

Some of the single track had some minor exposure, not too bad but you weren’t messing around too much sightseeing one handed.

Back at it. Hotstuff was on a 500 as well…..and had been crushing it all day. Super cool!

This area is pretty mind blowing. Hated to deviate but we needed to route through town to get supplies. So we had to press pause. It’s kind of like pressing pause when Phoebe climbs out of the pool in that red number. Hold that thought. Supplies.

1698104278193.jpeg

Pause released. Swimming in it again. BTW, Phoebe turned 60 this year. I know, I know.

1698104358530.jpeg

Dude, all I need are some tasty trails, a cool breeze and I’m fine.

image005.png

Shadows were getting long. We were still rolling but also on the lookout for home. The nights were still cold at this point, so we were looking for a desert home below the mountain range in view.

1698104429023.jpeg

JoeMoto led the way meandering a larger road, then a two track, then a whatever.

1698104451840.jpeg

1698104479982.jpeg

This will work. Good chunk of rock so we could have a pretty clean camp site. We are all really liking this scene.

1698104505502.jpeg

1698104545027.jpeg

The solid rock is nice to walk around barefoot. Felt so good to have my boots off. I was fighting some issues. Boots were new. Boots are more ADV than Enduro. I hit each big toe, once each, somewhere along the way the past couple of days. And I think the boots might be smaller than the exact same model/size previous? At any rate, it is becoming apparent my big toes were complaining. Shut up toes. Do what I tell ya!

1698104523588.jpeg

We enjoy the light fading and get camp situated. Put on some tunes from my JBL speaker….ZZ Top happened to rattle out first. JoeMoto liked the irony of ZZ playing as the Texans came into his playground.

1698104574572.jpeg

1698104636164.jpeg

Got a fire going and enjoyed that light show as well.

Sun fades at the same time the stars start poking out. Is this cool or what?

1698104747499.jpeg

Adjustafork feast in full swing. Ribeyes, tamales, corn, potatoes. And cold beers and Old Crow. Yummy!!

1698104866051.jpeg

This is living. In the moment. Just doesn't get any better!!

Night night time. I was ready. Stars were calling me.

I love your ride reports! Some of those pictures KTM should use for advertising, or at least a cover of advrider👌 what did the temp get down to at night and during the day?

Thanks MisterK! It was an interesting trek with good terrain. We tried to capture the moments when we could, I think we do a fair job at the photography. I’m missing the good parts of the riding already. Temps….a little colder at the start of the trip, I think we ranged 30s-70s. As the week went along, I think we probably experienced 40s-80s….as I got pretty sweaty at times when working hard especially in the lower desert in the afternoon. But all in all, I like the temps this time of year out there. Only one night was I cold when sleeping in the bush….and I wasn’t exactly working hard to stay warm with an abundance of gear 😉

very impressive to ride single track loaded with over night supplies ... great write up and photos. Thx for sharing!

1698190587027.jpeg

I was laying in my sleeping bag and caught the above pic…..the early glow of the sun above JoeMoto and HotStuff’s bikes. I got stirring, caught the below pic of our camp while trying to wake up.

1698190607954.jpeg

I really like this one below…..the sun behind JoeMoto’s head…..he is probably preparing some croffee.

1698193953121.jpeg

We got The SS Grape ready to pull up anchor.

1698190718006.jpeg

Rewoke the fire and folks started piling in the ‘cups of Joe’, ramen and I warmed up a gas station ham/cheese panini number. A little girly on my part, but it worked.

1698190738704.jpeg

On with it. Nothing like waking up and launching. Terrain changing for sure as we head into higher elevations. Pretty easy going. I was finally settling into this trip. More relaxed, ready for the day.

1698190782353.jpeg

1698190843480.jpeg

Some high desert action. All of this was really good riding and covering good ground.

Flew the drone some more. Pretty cool having this little guy follow us. I call my GoPro Little Geek. So Grape and HotStuff were working on a name for the drone. She said it needed a guy’s name. I think they settled on Kevin. I tweaked it, Little Kev.

1698197371532.jpeg

1698197410256.jpeg

1698197446864.jpeg

We started getting higher, eventually went up over a baby pass in the v notch you see below and back down into more desert…..that’s our jam!

1698191269054.jpeg

1698191284171.jpeg

1698197622231.jpeg

I like this shot, we are about to descend in the valley below and pop back up on that track you see in the distance.

1698191569812.jpeg

I think this was the descent…..as usual the angle of the dangle is not representative.

1698191590294.jpeg

And a pretty good climb.

1698197657355.jpeg

Solid riding all the way around!

1698191540825.jpeg

1698197682419.jpeg

Started getting a little warmer at this point in the trip.

1698191746305.jpeg

1698191910166.jpeg

We were snagging shade for our breaks. This spot had some cool formations.

1698191842528.jpeg

1698191861822.jpeg

We deployed Lil’ Kev again in some of these bigger washes/canyons. I absolutely love this kind of riding.

1698193370235.jpeg

1698197244636.jpeg

1698196379069.jpeg

It was time to land the drone. I usually try to find shade for these operations while Grape lands the plane. This spot will work, I guess. Who am I kidding, it was a really nice spot and had a cool breeze blowing.

1698191976784.jpeg

You know when you are taking a break and ignoring the things wrong with your bike but like pointing out something on someone else’s bike…..I let JoeMoto know his chain might need some attention. His lower chain guide took a hit, or ten, was missing a bolt and was smashed pretty good.

1698192009230.jpeg

Bmullex and Joe did some surgery, hack saw blade with some pliers, cut an aluminum bushing in half, put her back together with a spare bolt and adjusted the chain tighter. All better.

1698192093530.jpeg

1698192040831.jpeg

I really like this kind of geology. Sorry to nerd it up.

1698192055288.jpeg

1698199053296.jpeg

While I was picking on his bike and had spare time, I thought I should make another smart-alecky comment about Joe’s rear tire…..I believe I mentioned something about a Mickey Thompson racing slick. But before he could point out the obvious, I added that I guess it’s still hooking up cause he made it up the one climb I couldn’t the day before :-). Dude might have some skills.

1698192136251.jpeg

We were needing some supplies, rolled towards a marina to stock up. Scenery sucked.

1698192170389.jpeg

We got a varied pile of stuff for the night, packed up and rolled out. To include Bmullex and Grape filling up gas bags so we could complete the following day’s move….we had about 220 miles before the next gas opportunity.

1698192185997.jpeg

Nice little route making our way to end the day, well, to somewhere. Who knows where till we get there.

1698192336848.jpeg

1698192392349.jpeg

1698192440565.jpeg

Reset, let’s roll.

1698192482481.jpeg

1698197849309.jpeg

1698192526256.jpeg

Oh boy, this is smelling like we are close. So close.

1698192556709.jpeg

1698192571968.jpeg

1698192613259.jpeg

Sniff, sniff. Call it….we home baby! Gather some fire wood, roll out the sleeping bags. Camp set. Done.

1698192649326.jpeg

We were enjoying the sun doing his thang.

Fire time. First course time. Quesadillas. That’s right, you heard me.

1698192815087.jpeg

1698192837132.jpeg

The marina had slim pickings. Several of us got Hamburgers from the grill and only had to warm them up. Along with onion rings. Still pretty cool meal in the middle of nowhere.

1698192895869.jpeg

1698200016342.jpeg

And what about those pizza bites? JoeMoto and HotStuff were pretty pleased with themselves on that one! Tasted pleasing as well.

1698192939747.jpeg

And then Grape wanted a real pizza? I had some foil so we wrapped an adjustafork up, poked some holes in the foil and let it work. I don’t recall him sharing any of it.

1698192957120.jpeg

And then Grape gave some night time camera lessons.

1698193162923.jpeg

Night night time. We laid in our bags and all said goodnight to each other like the Waltons. Then I played Aaron Copeland’s Fanfare For The Common Man on my JBL speaker while looking up at the night sky. Give it a try.

Man Steve, I was beginning to wonder what had happened to you. I was gone myself on a 3-week stint in New Mexico, and when I came back and didn't see any posts from you, I thought you'd gone to the big single track in the sky. :lol2: Then another member here gave me this link. Awesome trip...well, of course except for LS's misfortune. As always, your story telling is top notch, your pics outstanding, and your choice of trails and routes as usual, EPIC!

Wow, y'all put the Adventure in adventure bikes!

If this trip and pics were made into magazine form and sold to dealerships their ADV bike sells would spike for sure.

THIS is what you CAN do on one of these machines, not just cruise up to the coffee shop. - lol, I kid I kid.

Thanks for taking us along!

I thought about you while on the trip.....figured since you weren't chiming in you were probably out riding somewhere. We were definitely down in the zones where you have played. Still more yarn to spin......

WOW again,,,just found this one today. Between Tourmiester's family trip and now this hooligan version I am BLOWN away and have a monumental appreciation of the folks here on TWT! Very very sorry to read about the terrible injury to LiketySplit. But it also illustrated how fortunate he was to be with fellas who handled it so well. Beyond impressive. The huge thing that stands out to me with both reports is how well the groups came together and STAYED together to the finish. We all have our "moments" on extended times with anyone and seeing how the participants of both trips worked together in some tough circumstances says a LOT about the quality of the folks involved! :thumb: :thumb:

Really good night of sleep. Combo of being tired and perfect temps. Took the below pic while still in my sleeping bag as the day was waking up. I had been listening to a family of coyotes yipping it up off in the distance. That and the Bmullex/Grape snore song of my people. It was kind of comforting and peaceful.

1698276891358.jpeg

I got stirring about camp.

1698276937210.jpeg

Spotted Grape Ape coming to life. He doesn't have spots, he was just waking up.

JoeMoto and HotStuff thinking about getting up. With the right attitude!

Bmullex was getting the fire going and his coffee solution sorted.

Late morning we parted ways. It had been a lot of fun hanging with JoeMoto and HotStuff. Good riders. Good camp mates. Good people. Good Times!!

1698277525375.jpeg

We were originally going to make a move towards Lake Powell, but with Hite closed down we just couldn’t carry enough supplies from the previous gas station stop the day before…..to last us that many meals/drinks….at least not the way we were accustom, hillbilly deluxe. And we didn’t want to run back into Hanksville, further than we wanted to deal with. Plus we had been out in the bush overnight for a couple nights….a reset was looking good after riding for 3 days. So we blasted some pavement to reposition for the next offroad section of the day.

1698280259491.jpeg

1698280280031.jpeg

Got on the dirt as soon as we could and started doing our thang.

1698280343494.jpeg

Things were going well, I stopped to take a break in some shade.

1698277772489.jpeg

Ended up being a little bit longer break….class 5 valve stem failure. We ganged up on it and knocked it out. Has nothing to do with me running low pressure in the front. Or my rim lock possibly being a little loose.

1698277873532.jpeg

1698277896589.jpeg

Back on the road. I mean the trail. I mean the wash.

1698277931799.jpeg

Really pleasant riding, in the shade for some, riding through water for some.

1698280374264.jpeg

1698280392667.jpeg

The temps were really nice in here and the cool water splashing on you now and then…..money.

1698280446773.jpeg

1698278016645.jpeg

And a bonus that some famous outlaws also passed through here, they were probably thinking and saying the same thing I was….this is neato frito.

1698280415862.jpeg

Rules, there’s no rules on a dirt bike ride. Glad we got that out of the way. If anyone is still standing after this ride, take them out. Love to.

image002.png

Then we transitioned. It is hard to beat cruising huge canyons/washes. It’s one of the best things about desert travel like this. Pretty special feeling in here, just beautiful riding.

1698280616478.jpeg

We took a break here and ate our lunch, burritos we had cooked on the fire earlier that morning. Not too shabby.

1698278049894.jpeg

River crossing……this is what stopped me on a past trip taking this route, epic flooding had this guy swollen and a no go. How was this going to go this trip?

1698278126313.jpeg

1698280934101.jpeg

The USGS site had a good web portal I had been monitoring earlier in the week and numbers looked fine for crossing. But I didn’t trust the murky waters once I put my eyes on it, there were a lot of little eddy swirls in the middle dancing past. Wasn’t in the mood for a drowned bike, in this sediment junk. We had big miles to cover today and I didn’t want to lose an hour or two with an issue. We were going to do rock paper scissors to see who walked it…..but remember Bmullex isn’t wearing any underwear and only wearing one sock. We were scared about his water depth measuring technique. And Grape was already crying about taking his stuff off and getting dirty. Gees, bunch of nancies. Get out of the way, Stevo to the rescue.

That and the Bmullex/Grape snore song of my people. It was kind of comforting and peaceful.
Oh wow, turns out I'm your people. Apparently, my wife isn't our people because she's never described my snore song as either "Comforting" or "Peaceful." Usually, she either kicks me or tries to snuff me out with a pillow.

Stephen and I were just conversing with our comrades! Notice the similarities with the Coyote and the Minimalist Adventurer...

Coyote (Canis latrans)

Life HistoryThe Coyote is an extremely intelligent animal with keen senses of hearing, sight and smell. It primarily is nocturnal and very opportunistic. Coyotes will eat just about anything. They feed primarily on rabbits, rodents and insects, but they also eat carrion, lizards, snakes, fruit, vegetable matter and even fish. This adaptability also is evident in their use of cover. The Coyote requires minimal shelter to survive, but it will use a den for the birth and care of its young. Coyotes usually prefer to take use an abandoned badger den or natural cavities rather than dig their own den; however, they will make the necessary renovations by excavating multiple escape tunnels linked to the surface.

HabitatThe adaptability of the Coyote and its acute sense of survival make it difficult to identify preferred habitat, although they most typically are associated with open plains in the West and brushy areas in the East. Their opportunistic nature has provided them the full advantage of surviving in a rapidly changing environment.
