Day 2:

my wife joined us, and we took a little trip
by Truck to Marathon, TX....home of the popular
Gage Hotel.... saw several bikers parked outside.

some photos of the highly recommended Gage Hotel:

also, we explored a 'secret' park just south of Marathon...
the historic site of the short-lived Fort Pena Colorado...
now a city-owned park called the 'Post':

Day 3:

Big Bend River Road ~ FM170
'the dream ride'

Normally May and June are hot and dry, but
this year the summer-pattern of daily thunderstorms
started wayyyy early....so everything is very green
and a little wet on the roads...

We started from the cabin about 8am... with a
muddy 5 mile ride to paved ground on our
slippery street machines... we made it
without laying down, but it was a challenge.

We headed for Fort Davis on wet roads,
and continued south to Alpine...also
wet roads all the way.

We topped off fuel, and started the 110 mile
leg to Study Butte, Terlingua and Lajitas
on the west edge of Big Bend National Park.

After about 30 minutes, the clouds evaporated
and the roads were dry.

We zoomed into Terlingua to find La Kiva
devoid of activity:

We had a fine lunch at the gaudy upscale resort,
Lajitas' Hideout:

after lunch, we began the supreme
ride in the southwest...

The sun was super-bright...
air temp was 96F and climbing...
but with the excellent desert
dewpoint in the low 40F's
it was perfectly comfortable
while riding.

FM170.... on a postcard perfect day:

Great pics!
But I learned that no matter how many pics you take, you just can't capture the real beauty and expanse of the area. Everyone should go at least once. Thanks for sharing!

these photos came out too small to be fully appreciated

next time i'll go bigger.

oh, by the way...i'm going back
next week....staying 8 nights at
the cabin, and 'breaking in' that
brand new rear tire.

might do the river road again....
also a day trip up to Guadalupe Nat. Park

it's all in my 'neighborhood' out there.

bragging = yes.
