Pie Run VI: Bluebonnet Cafe 6/27

So I developed a carb issue on the way to the springs, madeit home ok but looks like the pirate klr is making a trip to zabors in the morning as the idle is way off and have to half choke it to keep it going...but a fun trip nonetheless....oh, and I saw the key Kurt, had to stop Fred from steLing parts

Well, it's sunday morning and I feel better than I did yesterday at 630pm. 433 miles for the total with one courthouse; Bastrop County. Lots of water was consumed. 700am departure I45-1488-290-21-71-281-1431-183-290-1488-I-45 645pm return was my route. Brenham Starbucks is a wonderful, cool place with friendly folks.

Now my limited pics. Too hot to try for photos while riding.

It was good to get out and see folks but man, somebody turn off the oven! So far, looks like everyone made it home fine.

And the mess at 71/281...just that, a mess. Remains of a tracter trailer hauling what appeared to be fruits and vegatables. At least that's what the bucket loader looked to be cleaning up. And kitty litter was ditch to ditch. Thanks to the volunteer firemen for their cleanup and directions about the "oil slick". It was.

I didn't get many pics... too hot to do much gawking.

All in all a good day, just a little toasty.

My first time pie run--Great time, fun ride out of Austin up 2222 to Volente road then to 1431--too bad the heat ran us all off early. jhansen got a good pic of the bumble wee waiting to get the h--- out of that hot parking lot. Like everyone else I decided it was too hot to visit outside and bailed after eating--felt bad about staying inside too long with the long line of folks waiting to get in.

I'm looking froward to the next one--or maybe the next cooler one so I can meet a few more of the regulars here.

Lesson learned; don't be late to the Bluebonnet Cafe... line was way out the door and wait was well beyond gettting to see anyone inside. Good news, the River Grille is only a few blocks away. Sat next to the windows and watched the watercraft. Plenty of room in the separate room and the food was good. Missed the fellowship, but the trip wasn't a bust.

Had bread pudding instead of pie. It was very good. Peach cobbler ala mode was also big and very good. I had the pudding and the +3 had the cobbler.

Tina and I did about 558 miles and did not get back home until 11:15 pm. :loco: We had a ton of fun. We just took our time and enjoyed the scenery and the company.

The Huntsville/BCS crew made a swing over to Luckenbach which made for a nice ride.

The heat was a "tire kicking" killer after lunch. If I was going to be hot, it was going to be while riding with some wind on me.

The food was good, but the cafe was just over run by us. I suggest try the River City Grill down the street next year. They have a big room I believe we could reserve for a group. MTF did a RTE there and it went well. The big groups that show up to the pie runs are great, but when they have to seat us everywhere you do not get a chance to visit as much. Just a thought.

Well, I have never posted an "after ride" report, but I think I need to this time.

Ride down there wasn't that bad, since so early in the morning and the sun wasn't at it's peek. Met up with Chuck, Susan, Mike and Sherry in Hico, and made our way to Marble Falls.

Once there, stood in line to eat since the place was packed. Club sandwich was okay and pie was alright.

Waited in parking lot for Chuck, then we all made our way back home. Sun was out and it was HOT.

We made our way down the highway headed into Gatesville, when all of the sudden....I got light headed and things went bright and I was going down for the count. Thankfully Steve was quick on his feet and pulled the bike over and got me to the ground before I feel off. I don't think I have ever been that HOT before, and I know I don't want to again.

Chuck, Susan and Sherry came back to find us on the side of the rode and helped Steve and I out. We got back on the bike and headed to the nearest gas station. After a little break, and one quart of water later, I felt okay.

We all headed back to town, but Steve and I stopped in Whitney to see his parents and give me a rest.

Long story short, it was too HOT to be on the back of a bike and I want to thank Steve, Chuck, Susan and Sherry for all their help.

P.S. - Chuck - what is a Bob? you said there is a reward, how much are you thinking?

The heat can really sneak up on you. There really is no such thing as "too" hydrated when riding in Texas in the summer. Glad to hear it wasn't more serious than that Wendy.

The joke is on you guys. I left the key in the lock on the side that releases the rear seat.

I spent a considerable amount of time drooling on that bike, had I noticed the key, a long test drive would have been in the making. Not to fear, I'd have left my '82 Yamaha as collateral. I sure like the way a Moto Guzi sounds.

I know its been said before but I'll say it again...

Thank you Chuck for all the effort you put into these events. The name tags are a nice touch too (and probably a lot of extra work!).

I'll second that! Chuck makes all these events a bit more enjoyable.

Glad to hear that you are OK, Wendy. Your face was really red at the gas station in Gatesville.

Me too!

As to my ride; I had a great ride down with Chuck, Susan (watching her MP3 go through turns is a hoot), Slopoke (who isn't so slow), Steve and Wendy. The temperatures were moderate and the old Yamaha ran pretty good. After lunch I was feeling guilty that I left so many undone chores at home, so I took off early & on my own for the trek home. I took the direct route which is something I rarely do when I'm alone. My old Yamaha doesn't have a temp gauge, but it was sure hot. That's the last time I head out for a long ride @ 100+ without a Camelbak. I did catch up with Tracker who was riding an FZ-6 and rode along for a while. It was kinda cool to have two similar Yamaha's with 25 years difference in vintage together. A bit later I almost caught up to M38A1. There was a Sheriffs deputy between us and he was treated to a motorcycle escort for several miles. I made it home about 3:30

Lawdy, it was hot. Both on the way down and back home the next day, I thought my shins might burst into flames. I side-stepped the Metromess on Friday afternoon, swinging east through Forney, Seagoville, Scurry, Ennis, then through Blooming Grove, Penelope, Bellmead, Gatesville, Pidcoke, Lampasas, Burnet and into Inks Lake State Park to meet up at Camp TWT. Unfortunately, despite best laid plans, I left later than planned and ended up rolling in at 2130. I saw one deer at dusk about 100 yards off the road, but felt there were others waiting to ambuse me. I had the gain turned up to high on my deer radar.

Early morning at Camp TWT

To beat the heat, I showered and broke camp early, then rolled out to Lake Buchanan to see if there were any interesting shots. Coming back into Burnet, the steeples of Our Lady of Sorrow caught my eye. We enjoyed the A/C of a little Mexican breakfast place just east of the HEB--tasty Huevos Rancheros, too. Then Woodbutcher led us on a backroads jaunt to the Bluebonnet Cafe.

I headed back up 281 through Lampasas, Hamilton, Cranfils Gap, Grandview, Maypearl, Ferris and back up I-45 to the Land of Malls.
As with everybody else, the ride home was brutal. My shins and butt felt like they were shooting flames. I'd tanked up the camelbak with ice and water that morning, but also stopped about every 45 minutes to spray myself jacket and head down with bottles of water that I picked up at convenience stores. Many years ago, I got heat exhaustion working landscaping and it took me years to get over being overly sensitive to heat. I wasn't taking any chances again.

the scandal of the day...

Bob is missing again! :eek2:

 Please don't hurt him. he still has counseling from when he was armadillo-napped in Hico a couple of years ago.

There will be a reward... :tears:

No reward needed, I'am not missing . I have decided to go on my own pie run adventure .http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40992

It's a Kawasaki ZZR1200 with Corbin Beetle Bags.

He is correct. It belongs to my buddy, John (Roach22), who is wearing a white t-shirt and standing to the left of the Zed. It's an amazing bike with limitless power available just by thinking about it....

I am trying to get him to sell it to buy a standard more suitable for long rides. He bought in Utah and rode it back and I think that cured him of cross-country trips on it although I think heli-bars and lowered pegs would do wonders. He has bad wrists from an 'incident' in which I was, uh, nearby years ago and he can't go long distances with any pressure on them....

The bags are huge but I think they make your butt look big from the back. Heck, they even have dimples.

Yes, the audacity of Bob to get a new account! :eek2:

Now to evoke the cyber-sleuthing S/W to find out where he is & organize a rescue attempt. :trust:

I made an almost last minute decision to go to the Pie Run. I hurt my ankle doing some work in garage the last weekend and it is still very swollen and black and blue. Wasn't sure about having a riding boot on it all day.

I followed Denton Don down to Marble Falls. We had a good ride down except for following a bunch of cruisers down 51 from Granbury. The only twisty section of road on the way to Marble Falls and we had to ride it at a pace to take most of the fun out of it.

Upon our arrival at 10:15 we ran in to Carole Ann and decided we would go in and eat early since the Blue Bonnet was already very busy. Lunch didn't get served until 11 so we Don and I both had scrambled eggs, and chicken fried steak off the breakfast menu. I topped mine off with a piece of yummy peanut butter pie.

After checking out the parking lot while most were inside eating, Don headed to Fredericksburg to visit family and I head for 1431 and then on to Fort Worth. I was hoping everyone made it home safely in the heat of the afternoon. Sorry to learn about Wendy having a problem with the heat.

Since ST1300's are hot to ride to begin with I always drink a lot of water when traveling. Yesterday, I drank 4 liters of water on the way home, on top of the 2 liters I drank on the way down and the water I drank while eating.

Note the temp on the bottom right:
