Well since the weather didn't look good today I postponed my ride to Muenster until tomorrow. However since I'm not one to let a little rain ruin a fine day of riding I decided to go out anyway.
I left at 7:30 and returned home around 12:30. My goal today was to ride a lot of county roads and to say the least I suceeded in doing so.
My route was as follows
North on Preston
East on CO Rd 22 (in Frisco)
North on CO Rd 71-72-74 (aka Coit) these are all dirt/gravel roads
East on CO Rd 78-79 paved part of the way
North on FM 2478 (aka Custer)
North on CO Rd 127
East on CO Rd 129
North on FM 2478
East CO Rd 171 into Weston, TX
East on FM 455
North CO Rd 217 gravel
East on CO Rd 177 (gravel) signed said no exit but I pushed on anyway and indeed the bridge about a 1/4 mile has been out for years, so I amended my route.
West on CO Rd 177 gravel
North on CO Rd 176 gravel
East on CO 179
North on CO 220 gravel and once again bridge was out. I'm having bad luck crossing the east trinity fork. So once again I amend my route.
West on CO 179
North on CO 178
North on Red Maple Rd
East on Burke
North on CO Rd 220
FM 3356
East on Whitaker
North on Eagle Point (I missed this one and took an unmarked road right before it and it turned out to be great 1 mile paved road)
East on FM 121
North on Cates to Sister Groove Rd
North on Jameson
East on Knob Hill
North on Hooper (unmarked)
East on Langsford
South on FM 2729
East on Bub Hill
South on Ball
This next section confused me and I ended up only riding a portion of it
East on Rose Hill
East on Reynolds,
East on Johnson
North on Rosehill
I never saw Reynolds and instead got on Wild Rd, which didn't quite live up to its name, but was good none the less.
East on FM 11
North on 69
West on FM 697.
It was from here I was going to head up to Lake Texoma and ride park road 20 and Elmridge, but the the rain started about 20 minutes before I got to FM 697 and it made my ride up 697 very dangerous so I called it a day and rode through Sherman to 75 and slabbed it back to Dallas.
In my first three hours I didn't go 75 miles and spent most of that on gravel or very old paved roads. It wasn't my typical style of ride, but with out a doubt it was once of the most enjoyable rides I've done in a long time. The fall colors where absolutely amazing in several spots, with the reds and dark oranges taking over the horizon.
When I stopped to take one of my pictures on Bub Hill Road, a gentleman and his dog came up the road. He thought something was wrong with my bike since nobody every stops around there. We talked for a while and it ends up he rides to work every day on his Harley and his son and some friends took their dirt bikes up to Muenster for the day.
I think with some slight tweaks I could turn this into ride many people would like.
Here's a picture where I tried to find some leaves which matched my bike.
Here's the second bridge I hit which was out. If those pesky guard rails weren't so long I could have got around and through this one.
Here's the first bridge I came upon. However there is no bridge all that remained behind the posts is the two steel sides of the bridge.
This is the road (CO road 171) I took to the first bridge
After getting home I had to clean my chain, because the 30+ miles of gravel and dirt roads combined with my jaunt down 75 in the rain created a nice abrasive paste.
My bike is now clean and ready to go on a great ride to Muenster tomorrow
