Pie Run II: Hico 2/25 ride and pie reports

DaveAlvarado- You made the same assumption I would have- couch with paper tags missed the turn. Actually it was the R6 whose front wheel suddenly washed out. Wild view in my mirror:eek2: I'm fairly certain it wasn't excessive speed as he was following me:lol2: I found a very scratched cell phone back where he left the pavement so we are blaming the evil cell phone for his departure from the pavement:eek2: No injuries except pride and a small scratch on the bike.
Good to hear. I figured with everybody on their feet giving me the thumbs-up that it wasn't too bad. And I'm glad that pretty Vaquero didn't go down!

Mike (O Matic) and I left north Austin at 8:00 and arrived at 10:45 just before the only other NT (Chuck500) pulled in from Houston.

Some of the ride numbers:

- 298 mile route - (click here).
- 2 U-turns: still way below my usual average.
- 2 cagers flashed their headlights: loose livestock and a LEO.
- 3 fuel stops: Florence, Hamilton, Austin
- 2 food stops: Hico, Andice
- 1690: From Pearl to just south of Izoro on FM1690 is a sweet stretch of twisties.
- 500 calories: slice of pecan pie

I had a great time. A big thanks to the organizers.

One other funny thing. When DancesWithCurves met up I got to check out his new to him Bandit he got a few months ago. We swapped bikes and I rode it all the way down 67 from I20. I think it was in Cleburn where the main road was closed and we were forced to exit and sit at a stoplight before getting back on due to construction.

So I'm sitting there noticing that he needs to adjust the amount of throttle play and as I'm flicking the throttle around, I notice these wires coming out of the throttle. Then I look over and sure enough, they are on the left side too.

OMG, what a jerk! All this way and he didn't tell me he has heated grips! Flipped them on and in a minute I had warm toasty hands. Never experienced those before and oooooh they were nice.

I got to the old Minyard parking lot a few minutes late but found 9 riders already there. Leon took us off down FM917 (end-to-end) and eventually the best parts of FM51.

The best part was seeing One Wolf on his gorgeous motorcycle waiting for us in Granbury. ;-)

A couple of people said that they expected more folks to attend but I don't think they checked out all the "pockets" of bikes scattered around the KK. And there were some late arrivals. I don't think there was an official count but I figure that there were 70 or more there.

Of course, there were all kinds of bikes - always fun to see what shows up.

Just 190 miles for me but was good to see everyone out & also the surprise visit from Tourmeister! :thumb:

Re: Pie Run II: Bed time...Story time......

A little story about the Meridian Creek crossing on CR4180.....
A while back I was out riding that area (one of my favorites). I had actually been there a few different times in the weeks before & the land owners had placed large boulders on either side of the road leading up to the slab. Evidently...according to locals, some kids or workers were abusing their welcomes by leaving trash after stopping or maybe even swimming. There were also wire fences put up to keep vehicles from pulling off the side of the road.
Well....Whoever the trash makers/tresspassers were.....took the boulders & fences as an act of encroaching on public spaces. As I said...when I was riding down there that day a few months back...I came upon those boulders....in the middle of the slab...in the water...blockin the road!! About that same time a Bosque Co Deputy pulled up to the crossing from the north side. I was standing there lookin at the mischief & he got out of the car...came over to the slab & started moving the boulders.
I started talkin to him & helpin to move some of the bigger ones....I believe he might have been the one who told me most of the story....can't remember for sure.....Anyway...we got all the boulders cleared off so traffgic could pass & each headed off on our own ways.

Just one of the...probably many different stories about that crossing/pond from over the years......& I was part of that one.

Well, oddly enough Rod, on the other end of the road at the low watercrossing, they had a movable barrier completely blocking the road after you cross the creek, so we went around it. Great story though-I hate to see a beautiful area trashed as well.

Now that my bloody heart has come out of my throat, thought I was going to to have a heart attack on round two!

Lol, from me or the twisties? I had fun (thanks for the ride selection Mr2mch)! I don't get those in Dallas. The closest I come to twisties is dodging soccer moms on the freeways. I do thank you for the escort to the camp after nap #2. I was without question nervous after that.

Jamie and I had a great time following Mr2mch around and meeting so many of you.

Likewise. Btw, please pass Jamie my thanks for checking me out after each of the naps.

Then...somewhere outside Turnersville...Hizzo3 out cornered his angel. I secretly think xcgates on his Duc cut up the inside and took him out but I can't prove it.

The tracks show that he was right next to that steel fence. I have no idea how he missed it. Surprisingly, nearly no damage to bike or rider (its a Strom, they're suppose to look like that :-) ).

Well we were up and running again without any police, ambulances or accident reports.

We made it another 2 minutes before this.

This time I know xcgates took Hizzo3 out. At least that straightened out the bars. Again very little damage. Hizzo3 came out of it pretty well again too.

I should consider those modified bars as farckles. :) It was funny though, as I thought back about that day. As Jamie is checking me out and everyone made sure I am not injured, I see the camera come out. Without those pics, no one would believe me though (especially the GF) as there was so little damage.

All in all, that is why we wear the gear though. Oh and the next day, xcgates reminded me to check the tires.. 26 psi for both :eek2:. Not saying that was the cause as I know it was my error on picking my lines, but it is a stark reminder to do a good pre-ride before pushing limits. Can't wait for the next run (minus naps of course).

I was actually thinking of Rod the previous day, which caused me to check my own tires, which were not exactly over inflated if you get my drift.

Those XL Stroms need at least 36 in the front & about 38-40 in the rear tire depending on your weight & load. That said..the 650s recommend 33 & 36...For my girth....33-35 & 40 is the norm.

We're headed out to Big Bend today...Gonna spend the next 5 windin our way back thru the Hill Country. (my plugged puncture on the Metz 880 is holdin fine) See ya'll later

Ride safe. I am jealous of you guys, couldn't get off work to make it out that way.
