2014 ironman texas, moto-duty

Re: 2014 ironman

What all is involved with the moto portion? I've always been interested in helping out with these events. I've helped with escorts for HHH in Wichita Falls.

Re: 2014 ironman

it depends on what you are tasked to do, you could be hauling a camera person, ride marshal or riding solo as a spotter. the Galveston ironman i worked as spotter. i had to trail the last rider and report to the check points that is the last rider. at the last woodlands i had a media person i was rushing around at warp speeds to get pictures and video of sponsored top riders,

Re: 2014 ironman

:doh:I thought 2013 was the last of the Woodlands event. I hope they chose a different route. It sucks having FM 149 shut down for so long. They need to keep it on roads with shoulders and 4 lanes. rh
It looses business to my area, the Woodlands makes $ from restaurants and hotels, the outskirts might as well close for the day.

Re: 2014 ironman

Looks like it was either a three year initial contract and extended two, or an initial five years. There's some conflicting information floating around. But it looks to run two more years through Mayish 2015.

Re: 2014 ironman

I have already signed up for the Moto option since I wont be running in this years event. I willl also be working the team tent as 10-15 of my (new) teammates will be running the full this year and I am not sure how many more will be doing the half.

Re: 2014 ironman

I'm guessing top 3 age group if not win it outright for her age group

General information-
Last year we had bagels for breakfast and pizza for lunch at the volunteer tent. You can pull over and pick up a snack at the aid stations along the route. Do not try this while in motion. I will hand out the t-shirts at the 0630 meeting.

Remember to prepare you motorcycle tonight by checking the air in your tires for freshness and feeding your iron horse so you can start the day on a full belly. Traffic around the event is not conducive to finding gas stations.

The course map can be found at
http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/texas/athletes/course.aspx#axzz2vCoAHKFe. There may be minor alterations to the course that will be discussed 0630 Saturday morning May 17th 2014.

The race director has specifically asked that there be no motorcycles on the run course.

Below are the things you should bring with you on the day of the event.

Required Photo copy of your Driver’s license and Motorcycle insurance.
Required Everyone riding a motorcycle must wear a helmet. This is required to participate regardless of TX law.
Required Your motorcycle.

Suggested Full gas tank Friday night. Check your tire pressure.
Suggested Protective - jacket, gloves, sunglasses, long pants, boots.
Suggested Sun block for bare skin.
Suggested Water you can access while riding.
Suggested Credit card to refill gas tank Saturday afternoon.
Suggested Top box/sissy bar/backrest if carrying passenger.
Suggested Snacks if you don't want GU, gels, or power munchies.
Suggested Cellular telephone. To call in for assistance. You or the competitors.
Suggested Whimsical sense of humor. Duct tape.
Suggested Voyeuristic desire for exercise.

Maybe Spare Half shell or 3/4 helmet for passenger.

MOTORCYCLE RULES
1 SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST.
2 Do NOT go past the roundabout. (I don't think this course has one)
3 Get photographer in position if safely possible.
4 Do not stop in the corners.
5 Stay in the left track of the bicycle lane or out in the traffic lane.
6 Do not interfere with the bicyclists; be especially vigilant at corners. They corner faster than we do.

MEDIA/MARSHALS
1 Do not stay with one competitor, allow other media access.
2 Coordinate with the driver when changing lenses or significant moves.
3 Be careful at aid stations when getting a drink.
4 Do not ask your driver to do something that you know is unsafe.
5 Ask permission before getting on or off the bike.
6 You will have to dismount at the roundabout and walk/run to the finish line if you want to obtain this shot.

ALL
1 HELICOPTER HAS PRESEDENCE.

* Get ahead of the riders on down hills. They can accelerate from 35mph on the flats to 50+mph on down hills.
* Obey traffic laws to the best of your ability. You can be cited.
