Mextrek #9: Celebracion de Milton: SAVE THE DATE: April 25 - 28th 2019

This will be a party in honor of Milton Otto, our Mextrek founder and originator of everything ADV in the Sierra Madre Orientals! Milton will be in attendance, and actually riding his DRZ god willing. To keep it a party (and convenient for significant others) we will be holding the event in the fabulous, festive, historical, and upscale little "Puebla Magica" of Santiago, Nuevo Leon. Santiago is 140 miles of tollway and divided highway from both Nuevo Loredo and McAllen so driving there in a regular passenger car will not be an issue. Saturday night will be a huge catered affair at the host hotel with scrumptuous food, entertainment, and good friends. Milton will be seated in a throne, fed grapes, fanned with palm branches, etc.... Santiago by night:

Santiago is located 20 miles southeast of Monterrey. For those who attended Mextrek in year's prior, Santiago is the furthest north of the rides in the guidebook. Located at the very top of the ride named by Milton himself: THE GOLD STANDARD!!!

Santiago has a very nice, clean, and upscale main square with fine dining (an Argentinian steakhouse - tested for quality on Mextrek #7, Italian, ice cream, a Mexican beer garden), as well as a spa (also tested on Mextrek #7), delightful small stores, a church, and one hotel. on every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night the square is filled with troubadours giving walking tours with music.

We'll be staying at a posh hotel / spa on the square. With pool, 5 star dining, rooftop bar, etc... https://www.laspalomasdesantiago.com/

There is a pretty lake a stone's throw away with beach, dinner and drink cruises, and lakeside dining.

And of course the horsetail falls about 12 minutes up a winding mountain road:

Riding opportunities are not quite as plentiful as Galeana, but as the "northern gateway" to the trails in Richard's excellent guidebook, chances are you will find ride routes that aren't easily accessible from Galeana....La Ascension, El Trinidad, Gold Standard, Petrero Redondo, etc... So don't fret! The area is amazingly beautiful.

Also, for anyone (spouse, kids, time constrained riders) who might want to fly into Monterrey, rather than drive, I can arrange a shuttle to and from the airport. Flights are high now, but 60 to 90 day advance they dip to as low as $99 round trip. Fox's friend "AB" owns 3 motorcycle dealerships in town and can get a rental 250 dual sport with zero issues.

And in a strange turn of events we will have an after party, in Galeana, for everyone who hasn't got their fill of riding. Sunday to Tuesday. Free add on!

Maybe the trip for Huasteca Canyon.
Latest info from Zeke is that floods have ravaged the "roadway" and there are numerous sections requiring porting of bikes up and over big obstacles with ropes and many hands....so...let's try to avoid doing this with luggage and also not on the day of the big Party!

.

We ran west on Hwy2 past Cola de Caballo in the rain. When we crested the first ridge, we broke free on top of the clouds.

You'll be crying for the 250 on the asphalt around Santiago!
Probably true, but I've ridden it all on both bikes now, and I'm doing two 250 trips to Mexico between now and then. Plus, I can always change my mind at the last minute, several times.

Dang this seems super tempting. What sort of rental 250s are there Peter?
Dunno. I'd guess Honda 250 Bros or cheaper Italika 230 motard. When we get closer and there is a real need, I can dig more. Dual sport machines are more expensive and harder to come by in Mexico. Add 30% to US prices.

Nepal with Clean Drink Adventures

Love me some Milton, but had to jump at the chance of a lifetime to ride the Himalayas and do some good work distributing water purification units to back country Nepal. On a Royal Enfield no less. Mexico isn't going anywhere anytime soon....but had to take a back seat to this.

Thanks for sharing that link Bob... looks like an awesome trip / adventure / cause. Hope you’ll share a bit once you’re back.

This aughta be a great time for all and some spectacular riding.

Much as I'd like to be there, the Trans Euro Trail is calling. Leave April 19...bad timing. Y'all have a blast.

I would have loved the opportunity to join in that adventure with a real, worthy objective!

DEFINITELY have to give us all a report!!

Will a small bike be ok for this event?
Just bought a kawasaki klx250.
Absolutely. The KLX is a perfect choice. The 6 speed lets it handle highway at 65 MPH while still being a great lightweight trail bike. Justine has brought hers twice. Speed / capability has never been an issue for her, and she rides very quickly.

Hi Pete...

I sent my $275 in via PayPal for the trip a while ago but never heard anything back. Now I am going to have to back out of the trip anyway. I've sent a couple of messages but haven't gotten a response. If you or whomever is organizing can get back to me that would be appreciated. David

On option 1, You say single bunkbed, does that mean single on top and single on bottom, or just one bed? Im wanting to bring my son, but his Husaberg is not plated and would be riding street or graded gravel only.

Yes. I've done it on a vstrom 1000 and had virtually no issues. There's plenty of options.

Dear riders,

I regret to inform you this event will not be taking place as originally planned. With only a handful of registered participants it makes better sense to simply make this a much more casual event. I will be issuing refunds via paypal to those who registered and paid. And will be calling all who registered to discuss the new plan for this event. We will still have Mextrek #9 on these same dates, but not on the grand scale originally conceived and laid out in my first post. Thanks all!
