Anyone else enjoying retirement as much as me?

My trash day is Wednesday too. John arrives about 3 pm. So I don't have to hurry I can go for a ride or town first before I have to roll the big brown plastic trash container over 200 ft!!! out to the road on a gravel driveway. If I don't get back in time or forget to put it out my wife rags on me and for other things too. She has got much meaner since I retired, but she is a very good cook. She wants me to get a hearing aide. I 🤔 not having one is a blessing, I just keep on smiling 😊. Oh she takes it back to the house when she returns from usual shopping spree.

Lol, my wife too has been ragging on me to get them! I tell her, this is why volume control goes to 99!! She was not amused.
I don't want the hassle, maintenence and potentially loosing them from activity. I know eventually I'll break down and get them.
My father is almost deaf. $5K hearing aids for him do not work.
All the years of open headers, racing cars and bikes, and 45 yrs of industrial noise as a tech, then of course, loud music and shooting firearms, has taken its toll.

One thing I have discovered , there is very little difference between a 5,000 dollar hearing aid and a 25 dollar one , both suck .
I had a pair from a reputable hearing company and a price of $4200.00. They worked for a while and then did not seem effective. I think the issue for me is developing ear pressure or seems that way. I tried a set from Amazon for 299.00 and they do bring in everything but I can actually hear more from the cheaper set.

I’ve had Oticons fitted ~ 4 yrs ago and they have been a blessing. I cannot meaningfully interact in crowded rooms or noisy environments without them. I paid ~ $800 via insurance for them

They required several return visits after initial fitting to get tuned in correctly. I also notice, now that I am retired and not having constant interactions like at work, while still effective, they don’t quite give the vast improvement they did when I was working. Currently, they are only worn when going store, resturant, etc and not in my shop, farm etc.

While my hearing is damaged from a good life (open headers, loud music, guns, loud shop environments etc) the majority of my problem is the result of Ménière’s disease, resulting in a large loss at the lower end of the hearing spectrum. W/o aids, I cannot use a phone with my left side no matter how high the volume.

YMMV

Can you post or PM me the link to the Amazon. That is a fantastic price.
Just kidding about wife being mean. But I would be mean if I had to put up with me now that I'm not gone 10 hours a day M_F on a 50 year job assignment. We have been married 19 years I love her so much and I couldn't live without her. (you never know when they are looking over your shoulder when you are on TWT threads LOL.)

These are the ones I purchased. They are not perfect but I do hear better. There are several levels of sound volume. My left is about gone and these help me a good bit.

I had a pair of the hundred dollar one from television that had the best sound of everything I have had so far but the volume control was completely unmanageable . If they had a remote volume control I would still be wearing them . The only good ones I have had so far were a pair of phonaks that I would forget I had in , if I pulled my helmet on they were gone . After looseing a few they stopped replacing them and the model that replaced them sucked big time . I have lost track of how many different ones I have gone through . Some were adequate , some were compleat junk . And several failed within a couple months . They wanted to fix them and send them back to me and I said no if they dont work past the end of the trial period I sure as **** cant depend on them to last a few years .

The ones I provided above have I think 5 volume levels, push button. They have been pretty decent and I have wore with helmet. There are all kinds to consider.

Another thing - aids are not gonna get your hearing back - their main help is in conversations. If you have the typical 4K notch or tinnitus, aids may switch the frequencies or provide some counteractive noise for tinnitus, but the loss still there and the tinnitus is only masked. Hearing aids etc are primarily designed for word recognition, not music, engine noises etc. When trying to diagnose anything by sound, the hearing aids definitely will trick you.

The only thing increased money brings, is improved speech isolation for noisy venues and even then, you really need to be directly facing the source of the voice/sound etc.

I don't wear mine while operating noisy equipment, working outside etc. I only put them on when I'll be interacting with persons - especially in noisy environs - this even includes "quiet" spaces (ie rooms with hard surfaces (tile etc), tall ceilings, people shuffling around, HVAC working)

Also if you don't have insurance, they are an EXPENSIVE gamble. I've had at least a few persons I know not tolerate them - don't like things in their ears, glasses rubbed and made noise, hair rubbed on aids made noise etc etc. Some of the persons did not invest the time to get them tuned. On mine, it took at least 5-8 office visits to get them tuned right. (fortunately, I had unlimited fitting visits for 6 month included in the cost)

I need hearing aids, these comments aren't real encouraging! Huh?
Your thoughts ? I do better with the ones I use. They initially tried to sell a more advanced pair and I asked them directly, is this new pair going help ? They couldn't garuntee results. So, I wasn't spending $5000+ with no good garuntee. I am happy with the direction I went.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought the Vivtone! We'll see, lol.

Please let me know what your complete assessment of them are. Once you get them, I would order the filters, they keep earwax out of the aids. I get them from Amazon also. Keeping your ears clear will help a good deal too with the aids and filter replacement. Hope they do what you need. I could only speak for my experience. My hearing is pretty bad and left ear is about gone. I had them tested and they say my inner ear part is the problem.

Seconding the wax filters - have to change mine ~every 2 weeks unless I am sweating bad - then it is more often

Your ear will feel "fuzzy" when the filter is plugged

Different soft tips make worlds of difference in comfort too . Some I have had would need waxtips weekly others would last forever the trick is just keep trying different things till they work the audioligest keep telling me that I need sealed tips to be able to here but with a sealed tip hearing aid the roaring noise in my head blots out all other sound . Its a guessing game and they do not have all the answers . If you get a doctor that listens and try's to help you will get results . If the doc knows more about what you need than you do good luck
