This ride would be mucho fun but I'm not gunna make it.

Just got water and power hooked up to the Riveteer. I'm psyched to get some work done out there.

Y'all have fun!

Here is a James River Bypass route. Think this was from last years GPX. Not sure. http://dev.awsp.com/gps/James-River-Bypass.gpx
You may have to "save page as" gpx using your browser.
You will miss out on one of the best water crossings in Texas if you bypass it. I can't think of a better way to break in a new bike :).

Great group plus an excellent ride today! Finally got my dirt fix. I love this route. Will post some video and photos soon. I applaud everyone for braving the James River even after seeing their comrades get stuck, take a dip or both. Ultimately, everyone made it across!

To view and download the photos please go to the photo gallery here.

You can configure the gallery many ways and even get the original high res photo if you like so play around with it. They're only device quality images until I can get a real camera.

Had a lot of fun. First time on an "adv' ride and didn't crash on the dirt so I consider that a win. The river was refreshing to say the least.

Nice. If you can do this ride, you can do just about any adventure ride in Texas.

Great ride. It was fun meeting people and seeing a few people again. Thanks to the ride leaders and the water pit crew. If anyone has pictures of the James River carnage, please do post....

I just commented on Facebook that of everybody that finished the ride, both of the Versys made it. Well done.

To be fair, the little Versys is probably better equiped for dirt rides than the 650. 19 inch wheel and lighter weight helps.

Here's my attempt [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSVtahuXmv4&t=81s"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSVtahuXmv4&t=81s[/ame]

Awesome video, thanks for sharing.

hello riders, i recently moved to the Austin Area and I am riding a tiger 800 xc. I saw the gpx files for the TARA monthly rides around Austin. Does anybody has an app to suggest to retrace a gpx file? Thinking about trying some of the rides.

Ocho has the best video! That audio made me think I was there suffering with him! The James river is apparently like being baptized. A right of passage

You will be getting a lot of responses and each person has their favorite:

For displaying a GPX file on a moving map, I use an old phone (because I seem to always have an old iPhone that someone in my family deems obsolete) and the app "OSMAND"
Phones will still work as a GPS without service, and OSMAND (iphone or android) has the maps stored offline. You will need to have downloaded the state(s) you want before you leave your home wireless.
OSMAND can also record your route. *DOWNSIDE* OSMAND is running on a phone so it is not very glove friendly. I don't want my cell phone mounted on my handlebars as I prefer to keep my phone on my body just in case I am forcibly separated from my bike and need to call for help.

For reviewing a GPX file on a PC there are a lot of choices: Google Earth, GPXSee are Free Garmin's "BaseCamp" will work, but it will only have detailed maps if you have a Garmin GPS (or at least that was how it was when I last used it).

Even though I seem to get plenty of suggestions of where to go... :) I still like to figure out my routes. For that I have found "Furkot" very nice, and you can share routes with others or search for scenic route suggestions that others have uploaded.

Live Updates of where you are: So to have live updates you need a phone that has a data plan, and for that I use "greenalp" https://www.greenalp.com/RealTimeTracker/ You can use greenalp to record your track but they have a monthly fee if you want to keep more than just the recent track points.

Some of James River Rd. and the crossing. I tried to get everyone at the north side of the river crossing. Apologies if I missed some. Too far away to get the dunks.

I use OSMAnd. I believe its $10 with unlimited map downloads. I do tend to have some issues with Richard's routes for some reason. Here's what I do.

1) Load the complete route map (all the monthly rides) in to Basecamp.

2) Highlight the individual ride I want and export it as its own file.

3) Load that into Basecamp and convert it from a "route" to a "track". Save that file.

4) Put the track on my google drive, which OSM recognizes as a storage device.

5) Load that file into OSM, and tell it to use track for navigation.

After that, its smooth sailing. Enjoy, good luck.

Is basecamp the Garmin software?

Riders,

The 1st Saturday ride is this weekend. As many of you know, the Hill Country 500 is also this weekend.

Even so, the 1st Saturday ride is never cancelled. If you can't make the HC500 but still want to ride, then the first Saturday ride is still on the schedule.

Do any of the routes posted on the first page of this thread, for the monthly rides, include any off-pavement portions..? If so, which ones? I am from Houston, just looking to try to get some routes from that area from those of you who are already in the know.

Remember if they have not been ridden since March, April and May they may be paved now! Every time i ride thru there i find a freshly paved road.

Aaron
True that. Although with the flooding, the ones that aren't paved are pretty interesting, and even the paved ones are'nt in the best of shape. C'est la vie.

Just a head's up to anyone planning on attending the December ride. Since we missed out on November due to the HC500, I'll likely be leading a ride on the November route, weather permitting.

Attention riders. Due to a group of us having prior commitments on Saturday, we'll be riding the November route on Sunday. Same start point, meet at 8:30, KSU at 9:00.
