Serious Training Injury

Before a Trooper hits the road they face exposure to injury and death in the very rigorous and hazardous training involving firearms, driving and hand to hand self defense. DPS takes unbelievable precautions to protect the cadet but the risk cannot be completely removed. Even though this is so, the risk officers face when on the street are far greater and extensive training to prepare for this risk saves lives.

Please keep the Carty's in your prayers.

On Thursday, May 19, 2005, one of our DPS recruits (Jimmy Carty Jr.) was seriously injured in physical training. During the boxing, Recruit Carty took a blow to the head and suffered brain damage. He underwent brain surgery on Thursday. During surgery, he suffered a stroke. At this time Recruit Carty is in critical condition and is in a coma. Prognosis is not good for any type of normal recovery. He is in Brackenridge ICU.

Recruit Carty is 30 years old, married to Christy and has 3 children, Bryce
is 9, Maddy is 2 and Justice is 6 months. Recruit Carty's family (parents,
in-laws and sisters) are here from Tyler and are staying in a hotel.
Recruit Carty has always dreamed of being a DPS Trooper and tried 5 times to get into the Academy.

If you would like to make a donation to the family, it would be very much
appreciated. If you are not able to make a donation, prayers are always
welcome.

June 2, 2005 - Bake Sale, Silent Auction, Sausage Wrap benefit, from 7:00 AM until 2:00 PM in the Headquarters Bldg. A Cafeteria. Oh man. I didn't go (not my area), but I heard it go out. Having done many of the standbys (they used hire an ambulance to stand by in case of just such an injury), I can attest to the violence of the hand to hand training. The speech used to start with: You are on patrol alone, and the closest back-up is 45 minutes away.... You are fighting for your life..... And then they trained like it......

I'm sorry to hear the prognosis is so poor, I'll put my prayer in.

Where is the info on how to make donations?

Definitely a tragedy :-|

Adios,

Good catch. I updated Kari's mailing address.
Thanks

:scratch Am I just not seeing it? I don't see an email address, perhaps you did not submit when you finished editing?

Adios,

May the Lord help him to a speedy and full recovery and give comfort to the family of this brave public servant.

Amen

Please keep his family in your prayers.

AUSTIN --A DPS state trooper trainee died Friday, more than a week after he was struck in the head during a training exercise.

Jimmy Ray Carty Jr., 29, of Grand Saline underwent emergency surgery May 19 following his injury during an arrest and control tactics drill.

DPS officials would not say exactly how Carty's injury was sustained.

Carty was a former deputy in the Smith County Sheriff's Department.

A DPS official said they are reviewing the procedures trainees go through to determine if any changes need to be made.

Carty was one of 123 new DPS recruits who began training in January.
