Is that dirt, paved or both? I've been to Presidio, Candelaria is another 49 miles along the river (according to Google Maps) and about 90 minutes along 170. It looks paved but maybe the speed limit is slow. What's at Candelaria?
I know FM170 is paved all the way to Ruidosa, TX. That's as far as I've been. I've turned on Pinto Canyon Road from Ruidosa. It appears (on google maps satellite view) to be paved all the way to downtown Candelaria. After that its gravel/sand. Buy gas in Presidio. And of course there is no or very little cell phone reception in this area. I would count on none.
Well, would the Strom be ok for that trip ? Never been there, so, should be interesting.
If you're just going to Candelaria, I think its all paved to there. If you're going beyond on Chispa road, that depends how good you are at riding the Strom in sand. I don't know what the road conditions are because I haven't been. If it was me, I'd take your smaller bike since the road could turn out rougher than the average gravel road. But it might not be, but this is not a frequently traveled road. And the DRZ is ok on the pavement. You'll want some spare gas and a lot of water. The area appears pretty remote.
You could take the Strom to Candelaria, then backtrack to Ruidosa and head north on Pinto Canyon Road (a classic and should be very strom-able) into Marfa. A nice ride. I've done that on the GS and WR.
