Since moving to Colorado I’ve been getting the itch to get back on a dirt bike. A good friend let me trail ride his KTM250, which made it even worse.
Late last summer, i picked up a 2000 YZ250 for $450 as a project. My original intention was to throw it back together, while fixing what needed to be fixed, and flip it. As i got into it, it needed a lot of work, and i started adding things to the project because I wanted too, not because it needed it.
The bike already had: full FMF gnarly pipe and turbine core exhaust, fathead billet racing head, and v force reeds.
I knew it needed a piston and crank when i bought it. Turns out the cylinder was in rough shape as well. I bought a new piston and crank, and decided while i was at it, i would throw all new bearings (crank and transmission) in the bottom end. I sent the cylinder off to Millennium Tech, who did an amazing job. It came back looking better than new.
As i got into it, i decided a heavy flywheel weight would be a good addition for riding woods up here. And you know, those plastics were in rough shape, so I ordered a full set. I mean, might as well right. Of course you have to have bark busters, and new grips. The new plastics look naked without graphics, so naturally i needed those as well.
I had to order several odds and ends to get it back together correctly. Did my best to jet it for mods and altitude (I live just above 6,000 feet, and will be doing a bunch of riding from 9,000-10,000 feet).
Several late nights in the garage, separated by stretches of business or lack of motivation, hiking trips and snowboarding also get in the way, and it’s all finally together and ready for a trail ride. I ran her thru a few heat cycles in the garage, and did a quick “shake down” ride at a friends place who has 5 acres. This is my first two-stroke, and I’m pretty excited about it. She’s strong!
I’m super stoked to finally get her out on a proper trail ride. I’m also very torn. My original plan was to sell it, but with all that I’ve done, I’m kind of attached. Not to mention, I’ll be lucky to break even on the cost, but it was a fun build.
This is the day i brought her home
Thrown together for a quick pic
Starting to clean up the motor and get to work
Box of goodies
More work
Getting bearings out is a ****
Getting the motor back together
The pretty “new” cylinder (i wish i would have taken more pics of the cylinder)
That’s the flywheel weight
Getting it back to a roller
Almost ready for a shake down ride
And as she sits today!
