Since moving to Colorado I’ve been getting the itch to get back on a dirt bike. A good friend let me trail ride his KTM250, which made it even worse.
Late last summer, i picked up a 2000 YZ250 for $450 as a project. My original intention was to throw it back together, while fixing what needed to be fixed, and flip it. As i got into it, it needed a lot of work, and i started adding things to the project because I wanted too, not because it needed it.
The bike already had: full FMF gnarly pipe and turbine core exhaust, fathead billet racing head, and v force reeds.
I knew it needed a piston and crank when i bought it. Turns out the cylinder was in rough shape as well. I bought a new piston and crank, and decided while i was at it, i would throw all new bearings (crank and transmission) in the bottom end. I sent the cylinder off to Millennium Tech, who did an amazing job. It came back looking better than new.
As i got into it, i decided a heavy flywheel weight would be a good addition for riding woods up here. And you know, those plastics were in rough shape, so I ordered a full set. I mean, might as well right. Of course you have to have bark busters, and new grips. The new plastics look naked without graphics, so naturally i needed those as well.
I had to order several odds and ends to get it back together correctly. Did my best to jet it for mods and altitude (I live just above 6,000 feet, and will be doing a bunch of riding from 9,000-10,000 feet).
Several late nights in the garage, separated by stretches of business or lack of motivation, hiking trips and snowboarding also get in the way, and it’s all finally together and ready for a trail ride. I ran her thru a few heat cycles in the garage, and did a quick “shake down” ride at a friends place who has 5 acres. This is my first two-stroke, and I’m pretty excited about it. She’s strong!
I’m super stoked to finally get her out on a proper trail ride. I’m also very torn. My original plan was to sell it, but with all that I’ve done, I’m kind of attached. Not to mention, I’ll be lucky to break even on the cost, but it was a fun build.

This is the day i brought her home

Looking good and with all new moving parts should be good for a long time.

I'm a big fan of the steel frame YZ and WR bikes. I find them easier to ride than the aluminum frame ones. I rode aYZ250 of the same vintage at Octillo Wells for a scramble one vacation. My first ride on one and had a blast despite my skill deficiencies in the desert. Good to see you around Jason.

Awesome job! I love two stroke dirtbike rebuilds!!! anyone can do it with simple hand tools.

A friend sent me a link to a posting for someone local selling a Lectron carb for a yz250. I told him I’m done spending money on this bike for now LOL

You have been away from bikes too long if you think you are ever "done spending money"

Took her out for her maiden voyage today.
Dude, this thing is a BEAST! It wants to go and wants to go fast! It might be too fast for me LOL.
Did a couple hill climbs and it didn’t care what gear i was in. I wish the brakes were a little better, but all in all, I’m super happy with this thing.

Where did you buy the kickstand from? Excellent job.

Stay away from upgrading the brakes Jason. I remember what happened last time.

They have them for free at the area we were riding.
They have free fork savers also.

No one that has been here any length of time is betting a plugged nickel that you'd sell it. You have bonded. Just ride it!!

You went there, I was not planning on bringing that back up but since you did. Check your work twice and let someone take the first ride Jason

well that cat's out of the bag, so when do we get to hear this sordid tale? :trust:

Some of these guys have good memories, and won’t let a guy live something down LOL

9 yrs ago now, i went for a ride “around the block” that landed me a week in the hospital and 2 months in a wheel chair.
The joke is, i had cleaned the carb and cleaned/adjusted the brakes on my bike, and the brakes failed at the worst possible time.

The only catch is, this weekend i was also able to ride a friends KTM 300, and that bike hooked me. I’ve been a big fan or orange bikes for a while (had a 250sxf back in the day), it this thing is on another level.
Don’t be too surprised to see me upgrade as soon as i can afford it LOL

Well, the fact that you're able to live in Colorado Springs and get another bike at all tells me you're doing alright. Years ago, before marriage, I looked into all the details to move anywhere in Colorado, Denver/Boulder/Ft. Collins mostly, and decided I couldn't afford the same size house and lifestyle I enjoy in Texas. Cheap to live here for the most part.

That said, upgrading at altitude, I'd certainly look into the wonderful self adjusting F.I. next time around. Even my old CV carb bikes worked a treat going from 200 ft in Tomball to 14,000 ft.

What’s interesting is, we definitely make less working here, so we’ve have to make budget changes/sacrifices, but we’re happier here. It just kind of suits us.
Yes houses here are way more expensive, but the difference in property tax kind of levels the playing field and monthly mortgage payments aren’t that different.
And I’d LOVE to have an FI orange two stroke, but no way i can afford that. I’m selling this and a little quad to hopefully get a 2008/2009 KTM 300. If i play my cards right maybe a 2010 with a magic button. Thought after riding this weekend, i don’t hate kick starting a 2stroke the way i hate kick starting a 4stroke LOL
