Guys and gals, my 21 year old daughter took a dirt nap on Friday 13th august whilst riding with me and broke her right collarbone. We took her to the local hospital (a massive Baylor scott and white hospital in McKinney) they x-rayed her and confirmed the collarbone was broken, but had no-one on staff to deal with it, the bones are not aligned, so they gave her a prescription for pain killers and sent her home telling her to see a specialist. I was not very impressed to say the least, so I am now looking for an orthopedic specialist in the Princeton/McKinney area, I figured many of you have probably broken collarbones, so was wondering if you had any recommendations? She is in a lot of pain so I want to see someone as soon as possiblé.

cheers Gary

Really Sorry about your daughter, won't be much help to you as I am in San Antonio, but I would highly recommend Dr Mathew Dwyer with Orthopedic Performance Institute in San Antonio, He did an amazing job rebuilding my wife's shoulder after a bad fall...And has treated me several times for injuries. Hopefully you find somebody close to you.

Gary, give this guy a shout. He came highly recommended to me from some of my hockey buddies. Did a good job on my shoulders without surgery. A little closer than San Antonio:

Sorry to hear it, Gary.

Surprising that they couldn’t have been of more assistance.

I’m sure you’ll find an excellent doc. And hope she heals well.

I've experienced the same thing a couple of times. Broke my right wrist, emergency room took x-rays, "Yep, it's broke."; here's a sling - go find and orthopedist. Tore 3 out of the 4 ligaments in my shoulder; emergency room took x-rays, "Yep, you screwed it up."; here's a sling - go find and orthopedist.

Sorry to hear Gary; I can recommend an excellent guy here in Clear Lake, but I would think there would be someone equally qualified closer to you.

Thanks Jay, I had really expected a hospital of this size (it’s huge) would have been able to do a lot more for her, very disappointed in them and will not be going back again, when my wife broke her lower leg (both bones) they did the same thing, took some x-rays and said yes it’s broken see a specialist.. fortunately the specialist saw her Monday afternoon and had her in surgery Tuesday morning and she was walking (with crutches) Tuesday night..

Don’t be too disappointed. I’ve seen ER Doctors do more harm than good by trying to do something they are not specialists in. Guy I work with had ER Doctors put his collar bone back and he ended up seeing a specialist 2yrs later to cut it apart and have some nice hardware installed to repair the poor job done 1st time. Specialist is very sure he could have got him mended straight with no hardware had he come to him in the beginning. I know it is hard to see you kid hurting but it will probably workout better this way.

Broke mine a few years ago. Had to wait several days for the swelling to go down to get it fixed. First doc I saw wanted to use a new zip tie method, probably okay but found one that put it back together using titanium. Old school with screws. That way it matched my ankle.

Hope she gets along well and heals quickly.

Sorry Gary … really stinks but common. I have broke both once and one twice.

Do not operate… use back sling and they will realign. Road dirt today with an older rider that has broken both numerous times. Never had surgery always just used the sling method.

When I broke my collar bone back in March of 2020, I went and saw Dr. Shane Seroyer in Arlington off I-20 and Matlock. Him and the physical therapists at the site took really good care of me. I know that's not very close to McKinney, but it is in the DFW metroplex.

Gary, maybe check with Bart, Copb8 on the forum. He lives in Dallas area. He had a bad crash in Arkansas last year and had to have extensive orthopedic surgery.

Thanks everyone, I am hoping we can get away with a 8 sling and just align the bones, or maybe external fixators.. we have Friend who is in the orthopedic profession and he recommended a specialist when my wife broke her leg (also a dirt bike accident) who did a fantastic job, we just spoke with that doctor by phone and he also deals with shoulders and collarbones, so we will see him Monday and see what he suggests. I am hoping surgery is a last resort, and that we can get away with a sling and some manipulation to get the bones aligned, as stated by Monday some of the swelling might have also gone down so that will be good.
thanks for all the help & suggestions.

They plated my collar bone, the down side to plating it from what i gather is it makes the bone weaker and more likely to break later if its not removed.
My son broke his and it was about a 30 degree angle from lining up. They put him in a sling. Apparently it forms a ball of calcium around the break and as it heals it straightens up.
Sorry to hear about your daughter.

Awesome Gary. Age is on her side. All this metal floating around in our bodies ?…. only if we have no choice.

Thanks JT. I have a couple recommendations but none in the McKinney area.

My surgery, which was very extensive, happened in Missouri by an awesome doctor, Dr Nugent. However my follow-up doc is in Dallas and is reknown in his field. Doctor Krishnan. He's an exceptional surgeon. It looks like I'll need a follow-up surgery and he'll definitely be doing it as my desk is pretty complicated.

Another option is Dr Cantrell in Flower Mound. He's very well known on a local sports level and did my ankle and knee. Great clinic.

Good luck.
