After reading that whole thing, I think I'd conclude that it's not likely worth it to pass just because the car in front wants to take the corners slower than you like. If they were erratic, or suddenly braking, stopping cold in the middle of the corner, or causing an actual hazard, sure. But screwing up the pace of my ride, nope. And if I did try to pass, and they decided to play chicken at >20mph above the posted speed limit, I back off, frankly. You can win, bro. I don't care. I don't like being in a wreck.
That was definitely jerkish behavior but lots of people do that. It should be reasonably expected. It's quite rare in my experience for a male driver to not feel challenged when being passed. I've just gotten to the point that I anticipate this and weigh the odds of it escalating like this vs. whatever benefit I get from passing and for me, slowing down on corners is not nearly enough reason to do this.
One ride with
@grandpaul, my friend Scott and my dad, some dude on Park Rd. 4 decided he didn't like how slow we were going on the motorbikes. This is a 30 or 35mph zone with double stripes and blind turns just ahead of Longhorn Caverns. We were just riding along at the speed limit and enjoying the views when this knucklehead in a Toyota pickup decides to pass us in a turn, all four of us at once, and of course he gets around the turn and there's a truck coming in the opposite direction so his solution is to rip back into the lane, hitting my dad on his motorcycle in the process. Smashed my dad's left foot, broke the shifter, and my dad miraculously rode off the road and kept control like a boss, got it back on the road and we were able to calmly stop and figure out the damages. But that could have been deadly easily, all because some dude thought we were going too slow for his tastes on a curvy road. In any case, pickup truck vs. motorcycle is a losing deal for the motorcycle regardless of who is at fault.
It might have been that same ride when we were heading home and someone in a new Bronco on 1431 heading from Marble Falls back to Leander/CP was very obviously drunk, driving across the center line in every turn and often running off the road on the exit to turns having to recover quickly, driving 10+mph under the speed limit the whole time. There were four of us who followed this fool for probably 30+ miles, all the way until Lago Vista when we got an extra lane. This is double stripe all the way on this road with terrible corner visibility so passing, for all four of us, was out of the question. There's a slow vehicle turnout every 2 miles, and we hoped the fool driver would pull over and let us by, but nope. Anyway, to me it felt a lot safer to keep them in front of us than it would have been to get run smooth over by that driver from behind when we braked for a turn that they would be shocked was even there.
Again, maybe it's my sensitivity after being in a wreck 5 years ago and realizing that there's nothing I could have done differently to avoid it except to be unreasonably over cautious and make sure I have enough margin that I can stay upright no matter what nutty stuff other drivers might do. So that's what I've done ever since. A driver in front of me shows poor ability to manage turns on a curvy road, I want them in front of me with enough stopping distance that when they head-on an oncoming driver, I can absolutely avoid it without any question. But that's just me.
I'm sure when I'm in front of you on a curvy road, you'll rip past me in a huff too. It's all good. I'll be happy for you to be on your way and I'll keep rolling slow through everything.
