Davis Mountains Tour Route?

I just confirmed that I will have a full week (weekends added, I figure 9 days) available for vacation. I am planning to travel from Houston to Fort Davis on the first day (just under 600 highway miles) but I have not been able to find any guides or routes for riding around the Davis Mountains. Supposedly, there is 100,000+ acres of land owned by the parks dept. and a tiny state park that no one visits, but I can't find routes for paved or gravel touring.

I am also open to a back road route from Houston to Fort Davis, but there is a lot uninhabited open dessert on the way.

Any data or tips would be helpful!
