East Texas Monster Mash 500 - Jan 2nd-4th, 2026

We cruise back through town on Tx 21, heading East. The roads we are heading for are ones I have been wanting to explore for a long time. I have done all the paved roads in the area many times over the years, but have never explored off the pavement, and there are a LOT of unpaved roads out here! We head out of town on FM 353 until we reach the edge of the Sabine NF and then head South on FM 2785, yet another road that becomes gravel in a corner!

It was that exact "corner" that caused my butt to chew a hole in the seat of my 1200 Tenere.
I had been on gravel and dirt for a few miles and when I got on that 2785 it was a ribbon of nice blacktop that caused my right wrist to get excited. I was rolling pretty good and could see or sense a left handed sweeper coming up, if'n I remember correctly. Believe there was a little Church on the right in the area
I come over a small rise and that turn suddenly runt out of blacktop , like right then. Holy crap.
It was the first time that fancy ABS thing became a not so bad idea.

Tourmeister,
you missed yer calling man, you could be a great writer, author, and, or movie director.
Terrific write up. I appreciate your effort.
Looked like a great time and I hope the wounded get healed up faster than expected.

Agreed. Great write up. Not sure how you remember all that detail either. I always tell myself to jot down notes at the end of each day while it's fresh, but then I am usually way too tired and have to look through all the maps when I get home days later to remember the roads.
So yeah...that first day when you were shooting the video of the mud puddle and looked up and saw me rolling around...that was when I put the right foot down to stabilize and the knee buckled and I knew my day was over already. And for good reason. I guess on one of those end swapping maneuvers I did just before I said "Eject, Eject, Eject" I must have put the right leg out and jammed it really hard, because my MRI results were not good. Looks like I'll be on IR through the rest of the summer. Complete tear of the MCL and ACL in that knee. Right shoulder isn't happy either with a separation in the AC joint and some torn ligaments that will just have to heal on their own. The knee will get surgery in the next few weeks.
So pretty bummed I missed what looked like a great ride, and will miss several more I had planned for the year. Already looking forward to the day I can get back out there though. I could almost feel those roads in the pictures you took. Can't wait to try them...maybe next fall.
Thanks again for the write up and the encouraging words. Appreciate you all.

Dang that sounds like you came up short on the triple jump 😳 sorry you took such a Hit prays up for healing

Very sorry to hear this terrible news. Missed riding w you on the trip and hope your recovery goes well and quick.

yes, @Ride4Pie get well sir. on the bright side, your bike wasn't in too bad shape though. mine neither as it was a simple tip over. torn ligaments in ankle though according to report along with some other minor accompanying findings although who's to say whether those were from this time or the hundreds of other times over the past 30 years...Again, get well, completely heal, train and then get back out there, that's my plan anyway!

Nathan, what is the word on the arm and leg? You have the surgeries yet?

I do have my cleaned up track files now. If you want them, shoot me a PM.

I was scheduled to have the ACL surgery on the 28th, but the icy roads delayed delivery of essential surgical materials, so it was postponed to this next Wednesday 2/4. Bummer. Still hobbling around the best i can though. Not a lot of general pain so that is a plus. Just ready to get this over with so I can start rehab and be closer to riding again this fall. Shoulder gets a little better every day. Not fast enough for my liking, but improving nonetheless. Thanks for asking!

So we're closing in on the end of March. I am assuming you had your ACL surgery and are hopefully well on your way to recovery? How about the shoulder?

Nope, no more falls, please. You've used up your quota for this year already, lol. Hope you get back to healthy soon.

Sorry. Haven't checked back in a while. Surgery went well...I'm on week 9 of physical therapy. I have most of my range of motion back in the knee but still taking it pretty easy to allow the graft to set up. The shoulder hasn't been bothering me that much with all the attention focused on the knee recovery, but now that I'm moving around a bit better, I've started to notice all the grinding and popping of loose ligaments there, so I may have to try some PT on that soon.
ETRider sent me a link to the Ozarks BDR-X launch the other day so I can have some motivation to work hard this summer and get back in riding shape (maybe for another October trip?). Thanks for checking on me.

How are you doing now? Any chance you will get to try that BDR this year?

Still plugging away at therapy for the knee. Doc says it is safe to wear a brace and pedal around the neighborhood on the bike for a few miles now. Looking forward to some form of two wheels at least. I start shoulder therapy in June. As for BDR, it is still on the radar. I worry that I will need a fair amount of seat time after I'm cleared for the motorcycle before I try anything too interesting. I'm expecting a bit of a challenge getting back to the same confidence level I had last fall. We'll see. Never had to do this kind of recovery before, so who knows.

I’m going to try to do some scouting this weekend… heading up that way for the Rally at the Rock ride. I’ll find some good, confidence-building tracks for this fall!

I thought I would have more issues with confidence after snapping my ankle. It was about a year before it felt in "pre-accident" condition again. I bought better boots. Got back to riding, easing into more technical stuff. The confidence came back faster than I would have thought. Maybe it depends on the circumstances of the accident and the rider. It also depends on how bad you have the riding bug... Some people can put it down and walk away. Others have more trouble staying away. I fall into the latter group. Sometimes an accident will result in you having more realistic confidence in the place of over confidence. That can actually be a good thing ;-)
