ECU advice?

I recently traded in my DL650 for an M109R. I wanted something with more power and less maintenance.

The M109R is a beast of a machine...until it hits 80mph. Power is limited to 60% in 4th gear and 40% in 5th gear. Additionally, RPM is limited to 5500 in 4th and 5th gear (7250 in 1st, 2nd and 3rd).

Doing online research I have found several shops that will flash the ECU to remove these limitations but I am concerned that there may be downsides.

Dow anyone have any experience with removing ECU limitations and is there a risk of damaging the driveline or transmission? It seems strange that Suzuki would set such severe limitations. Is there some reasoning that I am not seeing here?

Thanks in advance!

Interesting question.
Is there also a speed limiter? That is what I would expect as a reason to limit the power. The chassis and suspension of that style bike may be overwhelmed at the theoretical top speed if the power were unlimited.

The top speed is limited indirectly by the rpm limit. I am less interested in removing the top speed limit and more interested in removing the need to drop to 3rd gear to accelerate after 70 mph.

I have tuned many of my own motorcycles , and had ECU's flashed by others as I got out PC3 / 5 software . Most limitations are for emissions and sound restrictions Euro 4 or 5 . However the FJR1300 with the 6 speed has a reflash from Yamaha to protect 2nd gear now that is so weak from thinning out to fit the 6th gear . If I remember the M109 has a pretty weak 3rd gear.
I just had BT moto rewrite part of my BMW's tune in 6th gear as cruise was to rich at 25% throttle or less.
You will notice big roll on performance gains , but watch beating on 3rd gear.

Heard the main issue on the FJR 2nd gear was on the cop bikes as they were always accelerating hard and beating up 1st and 2nd gear. Never had an issue with mine and refuse to get the transmission fixed on it.
You should have Ivan flash your M109, or at least give him a call and hear what he has to say. He's an amazing tuner and VERY smart.
I actually bought his personal FJR (went all the way to SC for it) and was probably the first FJR to ever get flashed.
He does amazing work.... https://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/m109r.htm
