Okay so all the chatter about the clutch was enough to get me to watch to see what happened.
Yes you can ride and shift with out a clutch...no doubt in my mind, but the failure mode of the clutch was not one that would allow him to ride. He had burnt the clutch up, so no drive at all that is what resulted in the tow.
