Farewell to Enchantment

 Yesterday morning I was adding the final chapter to this report and had gotten through Saturday ride, was well into Sunday's ride when IE decided to go *poof*, taking my addition to the ride report with it.

 no time today, maybe I can try again tomorrow.:argh:

Man I hate when that happens! It makes it REAL hard for me to get remotivated to do it over again! I'm kind of a one shot writer...

Re: Farewell to Enchantment [the Final Chapter]

It's all over...our last ride (for now) in the beautiful Sacramento Mountains has come and gone. Nothing remains but the work of the move and the homecoming, which I'm looking forward to. The homecoming, not the work. :lol2:

Saturday: 8/4

For our last weekend of riding here, we were undecided as to whether we should try to find new, unexplored places, or go ride familiar territory where we've had much fun before. This time, we chose to try some smaller side roads off a place called Potato Canyon. Pretty place.

We found some great views again, and just couldn't resist a few more pics. :lol2:

Noticing that there's lots of flowers, more now by far than when we did our spring wildflower ride report.

The sideroad begins to look less and less used.

It's beginning to be a little difficult to follow.

Uh...raincatcher?
180371310-M.jpg

Still finding excellent views...but the road's still fading.
180371378-M.jpg

Um...pretty sure we're still on a road. Maybe.

Maybe not?

It was...we found our way back to more traveled and familiar roads, then found a nice place to spend a few moments resting.

A water crossing on our way home for the day...in fact, this is the same one pictured with both my son and myself crossing together.

Sunday: 8/5 to be posted up tomorrow morning. Gotta run!

ARRGGGHHH! All these NM pictures are making me sick! We didn't get to take a vacation this summer, and I am sure missing my annual dose of mountains. Our stomping grounds for the past several years has been northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona. We have been working with a Navajo church camp, providing the food and cooking so the adults could devote their time to the camp activities. We stage out of Farmington, but the camp itself is on private lande near Painted Rock, AZ, at about 9,000 feet. Love it, and missed it this year.

We have also spent a good bit of time around Red River, Raton, and Taos. Never got to ride up there, though. Just driving and hiking.

Welcome back to Texas. You still have your NM memories.

That's very interesting!!!! Do they solicit volunteers? I'd be interested in some info on this.

Sandy, wonderful photos. No bike vacation for me this year, but your photos, and those of others, supplant in a small way that which I have missed and longed for all year. They elicit a painful pang, excitement, and wonder all the the same time. A cocktail that is bitter sweet.

If you are in the DFW area sometime, perhaps we can have coffee and you can share your roads on the map.

TexasShadow, this is done through a domestic mission group at my church (Richland Hills Church of Christ) called Trinity Task Team. If you like, I can put you in touch with the folks in charge. We really enjoyed it in 2004 and 2006. In 2005 we totalled our van in Santa Rosa, NM, and didn't make it. This year we thought it wasn't going to happen as usual, then we found out that it conflicted with a family wedding we HAD to go to.

This year they also changed the format up a little to get the churches we are helping a little more involved in the food prep and planning.

I really missed not only the landscape and the beauty, but also the people. Our group is a great bunch of folks, and the Navajo people, especially the kids, are wonderful. My 13-year-old daughter has always gone with us, and last year she had a huge entourage of kids she took care of and shepherded around. It was beautiful to see.

TS - of course we'll get together for coffee, but if you want to know where we went on the map, you'd better invite my husband too. :lol2:

ThumperDan - sorry to make you sick :trust:

TourMeister - thanks so much for your commiseration on the loss of my ride report the other day. I know what you mean about having a bit of difficulty getting up the drive to do it all over again.

Gilk51 - thanks for the invite to the Tarrant County M&Gs !!

Re: Farewell to Enchantment: The Final Chapter

Sunday: 8/5

Last day...last chance, so we left the dogs home alone a bit longer than we normally would, but they behaved themselves and waited patiently for our return. What good boys!

Scooter and I started off with our normal run up Karr Canyon, popping out on the Sunspot Highway. We rode up to the rocky, loose jeep trail previously mentioned in this ride report, but it wasn't nearly so loose this day, as the ground was still saturated from recent rains. We found a side road and decided to explore, but we didn't get too far.

180730267-M.jpg

So we tried the opposite direction...
180730308-M.jpg

Near as I can recall, we didn't get too far on this one either, it just looped us back around to the jeep trail. We sat for a bit, to regroup, rehydrate and we've been trying to spend a bit more time just being there. Just sitting in the perfect bird/bug infested silence of these mountains. I kept hearing some small animal in the low, young oak ground cover nearby. I was keeping an eye out, because I was sitting cross-legged on the ground and somewhat feared that the noise could be a snake. Well, it was a reptile alright, but not one I fear. A flyhunter...

He was quite colorful, not marked like the horned toads from Texas that I remember as a kid. Look at the lovely salmon color of his little nubby horns and on the sides of his face, along with the striking white accents on his back and side spikes.

We suited up again and headed off in search of further off road adventure. Along the way, Scooter mentioned that he remembered seeing a cemetary noted on the map, but that he wasn't seeing anything. Still behind him and uphill, I spotted a few headstones lurking in high grass. We pulled off to walk among the resting and read their names/DOBs/DODs.

As you can see, the cemetary is neglected, these long dead folk seemingly forgotten...may they rest in peace, content with only Mother Nature's decorations for their gravesites.
180731225-M.jpg

We soon headed up into higher meadows. The winter was fairly harsh this last season, with the weight of snow causing lots and lots of downed trees everywhere.
180730393-M.jpg

More mighty fine views...

180730351-M.jpg

The trail began to fade on us again.
180730595-M.jpg

180730513-M.jpg

This is where we came out. Shouldn't they have closed it at both ends?
180730619-M.jpg

So anyway, we headed off again, once more in search of further adventure. Those aspens ahead will make for gorgeous scenery this fall.

The weather's been pretty harsh on the fire roads and trails too.

Dodged this mean little tree that gave me a smack on the back of my helmet for my troubles.

That's all folks!

  :hail: :tears: :thumb: :flip: :rider:

Looks like you will definitely be bringing home some fantastic memories!!
