I recently rode the Natchez Trace from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee. The gravesite for Merriwether Lewis was at one of the roadside turnouts that I stopped at. according to his tombstone, he graduated from college, was a captain in the Army, was President Thomas Jefferson's personal secretary, was Governor of Louisiana and led the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific Northwest. He died at 35 years old.
