Gila Monster dual sport adventure rally - Aug 22 - 28, 2021

I recently approved a USERID request for JennSwen / Adobe Cafe.
Excellent. I invited Jennifer (Jenn), owner of the Adobe Cafe, Hidden Springs Inn, the Frisco Lodge and host of this event, to create an account here so she could participate in the conversation.

Still a long way out, but wondering what folks use for communication.
Have an older Sena 5
Time for an upgrade ...

One of the features of the newer models is the mesh network connections. In mesh mode, the communicator uses wifi to connect instead of the standard bluetooth connection. Mesh allows easier connection, just turn it on, no pairing. Also better range. But, higher battery use. Gina and I had older Sena 10S models and I have added the Sena Mesh+ add-on adapter to allow mine to use the mesh features that the newer units have. If you are going to buy a new unit, make sure it does mesh. If you have an older unit, the Mesh+ add-on works well.

I stayed at the Hidden Springs Inn while I was on the NMBDR this past Oct. Nice people and good place to stay. The area really is beautiful.

Jenn also has a rent house down the street from Hidden Springs Inn. Not sure if it is still available.

Rich and/or JT- question for you.

I've always wanted to ride Section 3 of the BDR. Had an idea to join the rally in Reserve and take a day to ride east on Section 3 to T or C, camp there and do the route back the next day. Do you think there would be obvious challenges if I did this solo? Of course anyone on the rally is welcome to join me. Also, what are your thoughts on which section is better, Section 3 or Section 4? Appreciate it.

I don't see a problem with riding to T or C, overnighting, then returning via Section 3. If you don't mind pavement, you could ride east to Silver City, go north on 15 and visit the Gila Cliff Dwellings, take 35 back to Hwy 152, ride east on 152 (the section just to the west of Hillsboro is fantastic) to I-10 and T or C. The next day you could ride back to Reserve via Section 3.

Section 3 is fun and scenic. Mostly class 2. However, the western most part of section 3 has a technical, steep, and rocky class 3+ section I would not want to do alone due to the increased risk of crashing and injury. There is a big bike bypass for that section.

My personal opinion is section 3 is much better than section 4. I found section 4 to be class 1, not particularly scenic, and a bit boring.

Great suggestions. If I wanted to make that ride to Hillsboro more dirt friendly, I see a road 150 that connects 59 and 35. Any intel on that road? Looks like it takes you along the Continental Divide at the end. Interesting.

The Northern half of 150 between 59 and 35 is pretty good, class 2. But, Chloride Canyon is so good, I would do it both directions. Use the dark red section of this track for a little variety on the way back.
edit: the screenshot is the complete track file. View in Mapsource, Basecamp, gpsvisualizer.com or the viewer/editor of choice. But, the twt builtin gpx viewer only displays the first track in a file.

Thanks JT. The dark red route looks like it could be a good option. Is it a fairly easy route or is it more challenging?

Easier, but still very nice scenery.

Hey all! This is the now (in) famous Jenn. As of today, the rental house is still available! Itā€™s 1-4 mile from the Hidden Springs, and has beds and plenty of room to sleep 5, single occupancy, with the requisite coin flip for the pull out couch..... šŸ˜‰ it has 3 bathrooms, laundry facilities, and a full kitchen in over 2800 square feet. Heck-Iā€™ll just throw in some pictures for funzies...: lmk if I can answer any more questions. :)
