Harleys for the non-Harley guy

Here's the ultimate Harley for a non-Harley guy.

But you'll probably want functional mufflers, fuel injection, and an electric starter. It's the Harley for those of us who saw "On Any Sunday" instead of "Easy Rider".
XR 750s are beautiful, brutal machines. We went to the Springfield Mile many, many times.

I figure non-Harley HD would go to the 06/07 VRSCR Street Rod. Water-cooled, mid control, 120hp, German-designed motor, FI with two honking velocity stacks in the air box (no that is not a fuel tank)

It is a HD and they even advertise it as such. Did you catch the line - a 1-1/2 ride is the trip of a lifetime

Yep pretty long ride,  our Turbo Buell Lightning S1 rides were 1/8 to 1/4 mile at a time...
A Night Rod would work mo better...
😎

Love my Street Glide , it was my first Harley and I was definitely a never Harley guy. The only problem as I have discovered there are so many people that make so many different aftermarket parts, it can get expensive, or at least my wife thinks so. I like the sound of mine the way it is so probably no loud pipes for me. They are great bikes if you love to work on your own bike though.

We left Williams,AZ this morning. The trip from there to Santo Rosa was consumed with Harleys. A few ADV bikes. Some awesome HD's. The amount of dollars in HD's we saw on the whole trip was surreal. I would think HD is doing well. It seemed that most of them were Roadglides.

I got back into riding in 2010 after a long hiatus and went right into the Harley world, influenced by a friend, I bought a used 1200 Sporty which was fun but traded out of it fairly quickly for a new Dyna Fat Bob which I actually loved. Two years later I went to a Road King which was I didn't love. Then picked up a fun 2014 V-Strom 650 as a second bike and never rode the Road King again. Sold it.

I've been in the metric world ever since but still like a lot of HD models and don't rule out another in the near future. HD has come a long way in the last ten years. Their new line of Softtails are impressive. I've been eyeing the Low Rider S. Their 114 and high output 117 motors are super quick. They have all the safety tech on them now too, traction control and lean angle ABS.

Even back in 2010, they were not slow bikes at all but were not going to win any races. My biggest gripe with HD has always been that "culture" they pushed. I'd show up for rides in full gear and the pirates would look at me like I was from Mars.

I bought a 2014 650 Vstrom, I traded in an older 1000 Vstrom. The 650 is a great bike. I eventually traded it as I wanted a dct after riding my wife's spyder.

Never seen one of those in real life, just the v rods. Seemed like a great idea, why didn't they deliver any?

They made some, but apparently market was not accepting likely due to below

1 It was a Harley, but not an air-cooled anachronism
2 It was trying to be muscle cruiser w/mid controls
3 It was a muscle cruiser trying to be a sport bike (see HDS below)
4 It was a concept that both Harley owners and non-Harley owners (mostly suffering from Harley Derangement Syndrome) wouldn’t accept

Excellent. It's a pretty fun bike and very well-apponted with upgrades.

Sweet. Since we're pretty much neighbors (Magnolia), I think that counts for one free ride, correct? :D:mrgreen: I'll let you ride the police bike and operate the siren, too.

I love my 07 Road King. You are welcome to swing a leg over it for a short try out if your interested. It runs like a top even at 106K.

Officially made the switch to Indian MotorcycleWhat does Indian stand for? No fricking clue, the way it should be.Everytime I got on my harley I was indirectly supporting radical idealogy that actually pushing radical idealogy on children. There is no going back from that.

Strickland is the last person I'd take advice from. That link shows his last post to be in mid 2025 unless I'm missing something. I did some research and he was talking about that way back in 2024 back when Robby Starbuck exposed their DEI policies. They have a new CEO since that time but I'm not sure if their policies have changed. Harley claims they're getting back to their roots.

Not sure what their policy is now. As I said earlier, we saw an amazing amount of Harleys on our trip to Arizona. A big portion was newer bikes. Lots of dollars. We were in SD at Sturgis when the Bud Light issue was a live. We were on our normal trip with @misterk and group. The Harley crowd made a statement that year. There was hardly no one at the Bud Light beer stand buying beer. Harley is still selling lots of bikes. I have looked at the Indian bikes next door to Ft Worth Harley. If I was interested in that type of ride again, I would still go with Harley. I had a lot of fun and smiles on my '15 Ultra.

Was at the Ranch Harley yesterday picking up parts. A new Road Glide caught my eye cause it had a police seat. Turns out no more Road King or Electraglide police bikes. All Road Glides from now on. Bike is powered by 121cid with variable valve timing and a disappointing 115hp and 139 lb-ft of torque.

Seriously HD - what gives - not even 1hp/cid. Ya’ll need get with the program and move some R&D effort from merchandising to mechanical development. Nearly a decade ago, based on a >2 decade old engine family,
I put together a really streetable homebuilt 110 cid 09 twin cam putting down 110hp and 120 lb-ft, built in my home shop, with homeowner tools, on my first ever motorcycle build, only 3-4 yrs after buying my first motorcycle, and was done w/o VVT, LC heads, R&D personnel etc.
