I received an Important BMW Safety Recall in the mail yesterday; Recall Campaign No. 21V-060: Fuel Pump

"Over time, the fuel pump could start to leak. A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire."

It includes my RT: 2011-2014 BMW R1200... and others

I unaware of anyone's BMW fuel pump causing a fire. Must be possible I guess. "Remedy is Available". BMW will replace the fuel pump.

Haha. I am surprised this made it to a recall.
The plastic QD fuel connectors never made it to a safety recall AFAIK. And the pump/sending unit gasket which is on the bottom of the tank will leak too.

Is this a problem I should worry about? I don't remember anyone complaining a gas leak on the BMW's.

Plugging the VIN for my 09 K13GT into a NHTSA search shows no open recalls but this article raises questions.

This recall is directly related to 2013 recall number 13V-617 that detailed how excessive loads on the fuel pump flange could cause the plastic to crack and lead to a fuel leak. At the time, the fix involved the installation of a reinforcing ring, provided the cracks were minor enough not to prompt a replacement of the pump.

I need to schedule to get mine in. I’m just curious how they’ll react to the sidecar hanging on it. The bike has had the collars installed but the quick connections both leaked. I replaced them already.

@Zephyr, I received the same notice in the mail last week (mine is a 2011 RT). Luckily,, I had let it sit for two years with 10% ethanol fuel in it and the fuel pump quit working. Had Cuznbob replace it last year (at my expense). :-( Problem solved!?

Carl, it might be prudent to ask Bob if he installed the new and improved fuel pump or if it was an original (flawed) fuel pump. You could get the free new recall fuel pump installed for free and keep the one Bob installed.

Mine started leaking, rather severely, Feb. of 2020. On my dime, I had it replaced at Wild West in Katy. I received the recall letter earlier this month, and contacted Wild West about a reimbursement. They assured me that that there is a good chance of a reimbursement.
I have always be pleased with the service at Wild West.
I just had a 50K service completed at Cuznbob. I was very pleased with his service.

I sold a used low mile 2007 GSA in 2012 while I was a salesman at Lonestar, and then went riding with the fellow the next Sunday. I had the same model and year bike at the time, and loved it. When we stopped at a gas station I noticed fuel leaking on the ground beneath the bike the poor fellow had just purchased . Boy did I feel embarrassed and bad. We never would have sold a bike with any known defect in it, so it was just really bad timing. I got the bike back to the shop and replaced the defective pump. BMW would try to place a ring around it if cracks were not bad, but that seems like a very questionable solution. I think the mechanics ended up replacing the entire pump in most cases. It struck me as strange that I was just now getting a notification 2 weeks ago for the pump on my 2011GSA, especially if it was a known and continuous production problem. I can't help but wonder if they are actually delaying a few years before addressing the issue on a specific year bike.
