How-to: Cross a River on a Ural

Wonder if the second guy followed?
Man that looked high risk with so little power and so much space for water to catch! That's a pretty good current.
I did the same couple of years ago, pretty much ended my water crossings even tho I made it. Petrifying. Made it to bridge, it was above water, looked worse on other side so had to come back through it. Current over road almost got me.

Yep, the power of flowing water should never be underestimated! We were deep into one of the ol' Arkansas 500 rides, where turning around would be a super inconvenience on gas and time, so we had to cross a stream that was moving pretty good. The really scary part was that just downstream of the "road", there was about a two foot drop off, with some serious eddying going on! Scott and I decided to cross on our heavier bikes, his 650L and my 650R, and it was touchy! We then "walked" back a rope and tied off both ends as a tag line so we could get the rest of the group over safely. It took awhile, but was definitely the right thing to do. I've always wondered if that rope was still there, lol.

I was with @MacDaddy a few years ago up there after a big rain. Most backed out but 4 of us went and actually had a good time. But there was 1 crossing out of all of them we had no takers on! lol. So we turned around. It was a solid road but the current was strong!

Movin water ain't no joke! Probably better on three wheels. Have been across several (not like that) on occasion, on a bike it's always that huge rock that you can't see that gets you. At 15 I had my restricted license and was on a TS 100. Got off work at a restaurant about midnight came to low water crossing at the Round Rock, it was going across pretty hard, young fearless, lots of years of riding even at that age I went for it. Started up stream edge was just about pushed off right when I hit the other side. I knew the area well grew up swimming around there. had I washed off it would have been three or four foot deeper. A lesson that has stuck with me, I got very lucky that night, young and dumb.
