Idaho or Bust….3 Texans 4 Strokes 5 States

The wide front tire is an 18 inch rear hoop laced to a front hub and a rear MT-43 trials tire. @KsTeveM had one and I asked him about it. He sent me down the rabbit hole over on ADVRider. There is a user “Joe Motocross” that has been running this setup a long time. This will be my first long trip with it so I’m interested in how I’ll like it after this trip.

Advantages: carry one spare tube since front and rear are same size, extra side wall allows lower pressure without worrying about pinch flats or dinged rims, increased surface area allows great traction in loose conditions, increased surface area allows it to float on top of loose stuff even with oversized tank and extra gear, trials tire offers great traction so braking is good.

It’s an idea that seems to come and go from time to time. I remember a few KLR guys running rear tires on the front.

I just like to try different things from time to time and so far I’m liking this.

I resemble that remark. I ran an 18" rim with a rear tire on the front of my KLR for many years before it was a thing. I worked great on dirt and on blacktop.

I'll do proper introductions soon....want good pics to coincide.......but the third is KTMCarhart.....or perhaps better remembered as Grape Ape, the KLX destroyer.

The group for this run: Motley Crue...doesn’t cover it, Grateful Dead…not yet, Men at Work…nope, The Flying Burrito Brothers…possibly. Some of Yall know me, I’m the playwright, riding my ’14 XCW trying to play and write.

@KTMCarhart is a normal actor in these plays with his ’21 EXC and he is the principal videographer. Some of you also know his stage name, Grape Ape The Destroyer. He did a shakedown run while bringing his bike over to load up. Also notice he has put his pack on a diet to try and rival my packing, well played. Are velociraptors sexy? Yes, yes they are.

@bwdmax, he saw the script and wanted to hit the stage. With a tried and true grandaddy of the 500 clan, an ’06 525, he got the part. Mostly due to his props, the mullet, that pre-dates the 525 by a decade….or three. That’s conviction. I need to tweak his call sign, doesn’t roll right. I think we are going with BmaxMullet. Still kind of long, Bmullex, that’ll do er? His packing, we are pretty happy that he is bringing all our Amazon packages from the last 2 months and a kegerator.

We skipped out of work early and just loaded the bikes into the Little Red Express…..rolling out. We almost needed a shoe horn for this orange crush of 4 bikes in the trailer. Gary was cool enough to bring a solid spare bike. This is live action updates yall!!

DO NOT STOP IN AMARILLO WITH THAT RIG(CAP LOCKS ON).
The bike thieves are on a rampage. Just roll right through and stop somewhere else.

We are currently holed up at a KOA park in the pan handle of Texas. I weenied out and split the drive up, didn’t want to start the ride zapped.

We aren’t riding bikes yet, but the adventure story telling and healthy eating has begun. I’m feeling giddy. More to come!

I been day dreaming a lot today, the wide open spaces do that to you.

About what you say? Mainly wondering when I can start wearing a onesie every day like my grandfather did. Let’s just say my wife is not overly keen on it. I can’t wait. Is there an official age, so I can let her know? Heyyyyy, I think I can pull it off!

Finally, terrain change, state change, color change, smell change. Got me thinking about changing from drp to beer. Soon.

We made it, we are in Empire Colorado roughing it at this chalet.

Good place to ditch the truck and regroup before the shenanigans begin. We scored this place from my nephew’s wife’s aunt’s parents by way of Sweden, built in 1969. The scene is just down right terrible. Here is Bmullex on one of the decks, in all his glory.

And MisterK, this steaks for you!

Here we go, the Texas Boys 5Hundying Idaho Adventure. The Fab Three rolled out of Empire Colorado this morning. Looked down at my GPS, just looks like a bunch of squiggly stuff coming up. Which is the way he wants it, well, he gets it.

Hitting the first dirt patches…..Arapaho NF. This is starting to look like an adventure, sky of blue, sea of green. Pic of Ringo and one of the orange submarines.

This is going to be the longest day on the trip as far as miles, flirting with 300. And here’s Sir Paul, come on you knew that was coming……the fool that plays it cool by making his world a little colder.

Oh, and there is no John or Yoko, didn’t want to ruin the beautiful music we were making or break up the band.

1660151984723.jpeg

We just got some human fuel and headed out for more abuse. Smell ya later!

Pretty easy last couple of hours. Normal mountain stuff, passes.

The tank trap mud fest pulled up some casualties, two of our three bikes had fork seals leaking. We hit the last bit of civilization today, topped off supplies and did some seal triage with the ol water bottle plastic hook trick. Hoping for the best. Also hope to get to camp before dark. When I find myself in times of trouble, the 500 comes to me speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
