Good ride report, Meriden, and great photos, too. Congratulations to you, Rman, and Thrasherg for conquering hundreds of miles of killer sand. I talked with Rman yesterday and he said that it feels REALLY good to be home!

While $2K is not chump change not bad considering the distance covered and the experience. It cost me more to Elk hunt in Colorado. I will Elk hunt next year so no LABTV for me next year but maybe the year after. I remember someone said it is never too early to plan.
Thanks for the Pics….

Hey Thrasher, let us know you made it home in one piece!! :thumb:

OK, still messing around with pics and ran across this one, now everyone gets songs stuck in their heads from time to time but this was ridiculous!! Every time I saw another saguaro cactus....here we go again...'There Ain't No Saguaro In Texas'. :phead:

Hey guys, I haven't been on this website in a really long time and just see this topic. I also just did the LA to Vegas and wow what fun! A friend and I drove straight through from DFW the day before Thanksgiving and got to the host hotel Thursday afternoon.
We started at 5:30 or so Friday morning and had an absolutely great time. I love desert terrain and sand for miles so it was perfect for me.
The event is broken up into "easy" and "hard" sections with bypasses for most everything. There are alternate routes along pavement if you have troubles, and places where you can schedule a pit if needed.
I took all the hards on both days, and loved every minute of it. Probably the toughest was the hard route just before the scheduled lunch stop on the 2nd day. It was mile after mile of gnarly rocks and long washes. And then you rolled into a town, where the local firemen rinsed off your bike to prevent seed transport or something, and then were treated to a prepared lunch. The final hard section on the second day was through red rock canyon, a wonderful rock garden bottlenecked with stuck bikes and a few spectators taking pics. After passing through that area, we rode into downtown Vegas on dirt bikes to the Orleans hotel/ casino. Man it was too cool.
I could go on for hours, but recommend this event fully. There were well over 500 entrants, and it was super well organized. GPS tracks were available at registration, and without them, I would have been lost, literally. A rock took out the magnet for my odometer at mile 4.4 on the first day, so the route chart was pretty useless to me. But I could follow the line on the screen and it all went flawlessly.
For us, the biggest challenge was the logistics of getting our truck and trailer from Palmdale to Las Vegas. But we got that sorted out and had a fantastic weekend.
I have lots of pics on my iphone and if anyone is interested, I will figure out how to post them.

You could probably post them here with tapatalk  We need to see them

OK JMZ, I am not too bright and don't know what tapatalk is but I will try to attach 2 pics. If it works and you want to see more, I will add more, probably tomorrow.

Well, apparently I need some kind of "security token" to be able to attach pics. So I am waiting until I hear back from someone here telling me what to do. Perhaps because I have not really posted much on this site, I will wait and see what the moderator tells me.

Hey BiggerHammer,

We knew some other Texans made the trip, but didn't know from where or what they rode. Glad you found the thread. The best way to post pictures to this (or any forum) is to get a free Photobucket account and upload photos there. Afterwards you can simply select the direct link from Photobucket and place it in the window you see when you click the little mountain icon in the forum softward. If you post to multiple forums, Facebook or send links to your family, this method keeps you from uploading more than once.

We ended up riding from Las Vegas back to Palmdale via Death Valley, a most surreal trip. Keith said the final rider count was 560, though next year they were going to limit it to 500 bikes with all entries on line. Lots of bikes and riders were not prepared for the distance or technical difficulty, so kudos to you for pulling off the entire ride via the hard route. Post up the rest of your story and if you need help with photos PM me.

Tapatalk is an app for the iphone. I am not very :sun: either when it come to this kind of stuff.

Didn't you guys do the same?

In a word, no. Why do you think you got that email from me yesterday? We only did the hard routes when we didn't keep up with the roll chart correctly and my battery went Lucas on me at the end of day one making me feel that it was prudent to go where a four wheel drive could drag me to the pavement. I was really upset that we didnt get to ride back with JG.

The drive out to California and back must be the brutal part.

Going out was kind of bad despite having had a summer job once doing the same route as a long haul truck driver. Coming back was easier. First we were used to long stretches in the car. Second Rman was exhausted from the Coke Ovens and I still had the stomach flu, so we both slept when we were not driving. Nice thing is everything around here seems so close. Out west get gas when you can, not when you need it.

Shortly after I crashed on the hill above, some guy on the little honda dog paddled his way to the top. The guy riding the HP two was from Austria. He had ridden it last year on a loaded 1200GS: panniers, girlfriend and all.

The picture of the Honda CT90 "postie bike" on the ride is something I would like to have tried it with....just seeing a loaded 1200GS, two-up try to navigate the heavy, deep sand has to be a simple feat in determination!

Looks like a fun time by all.

This is where the state inspector stole Meriden's apples.

CIMG1675Copy.jpg

We decided to share pics so a few of these were taken by Meriden and Thrasher.
M and I wisely decided to leave a day early in case we ran into any unforeseen problems and believe me, we used every minute of the extra day. After we ran into a traffic nightmare west of Phoenix :eek2: we still made it to CA early enough to take a detour through The Joshua Tree National Park getting to Palmdale. M had been there before but I hadn't. It was incredible! It was also very strange, I've never seen such strange flora before and the rock formations were so bizarre it was like I would imagine being on an alien planet. :eek2:

And this is the Joshua Tree..

CIMG1689Copy.jpg

We continued on and made it to Palmdale a few hours later and met up with Thrasher who drove down from Seattle. As most of you know Thrasher used to live in Austin so we knew him long before he moved to WA., he's been up there almost a year now and it was great to see him again. :sun:

CIMG1704Copy.jpg

The next day we unloaded the bikes and rode out to explore the area. Here was the K.O.A we stayed at just down the road from Palmdale in Acton.

IMG_0697Copy.jpg

We hadn't gotten a mile from the campground where we had to pull over and perform an emergency roadside adjustment to T's Rekluse clutch. :lol2:

CIMG1708Copy.jpg

Since our friend and fellow rider Hancock grew up in Palmdale he was a wealth of info concerning the area, he even gave us the address of his home so here we are at the House That Hancock Built.

CIMG1710Copy.jpg

We tried to circumnavigate Edwards AFB but soon realized it would take a couple hours to do so, that place is huge!! Even after getting directions from a local we still never found the main gate. We did run across the outdoor museum complete with an SR-71 :eek2: and a B-52.

This was Thursday, Thanksgiving Day and we'd heard through the grapevine that the Palmdale Holiday Inn was making dinner for all the riders so we attended and had a wonderful time! And the food was excellent!!

CIMG1726Copy.jpg

We also met a bunch of great folks that we would run into many more times out on the trail.

CIMG1720Copy.jpg

CIMG1728Copy-1.jpg

M in the lobby conversing with the Mrs.

CIMG1724Copy.jpg

On the way back to the campground we stopped to fill up, had to get a pic with at least one SoCal Ferrari. Yeah, he thinks he's reeaaal baaad! :nana:

CIMG1729Copy-1.jpg

The next morning we got up early and made it over to the registration and starting line held at the Palmdale Cycle Center (or it was called something like that). We though we were getting there plenty early to avoid the crowd but wow, were we ever wrong, it was already a madhouse. :eek2:

CIMG1736Copy-1.jpg

CIMG1737Copy.jpg

CIMG1734Copy-2.jpg

We had to stand in 2 different lines that were both a mile long, one line was for signing in and to get our ride packet, # stickers... etc..., the other line was to download the route onto our GPS's.

CIMG1730Copy.jpg

CIMG1731Copy.jpg

It was ridiculous! We got there before 6 and didn't pull out until almost 8. It just took forever !. :argh:

CIMG1732Copy.jpg

This was the "tech inspection" if you want to call it that. We were each concerned about different reasons out bikes might not pass, for example I was afraid my bike might be too loud and I don't have an analog odometer. I'm not sure what they were checking other bikes for but they didn't check my bike for anything. :brainsnap Whatever.

CIMG1735Copy-2.jpg

And so the ride began :sun:, after all these years of reading about it, watching movies and vids, and dreaming, I was actually in California riding the
LA-BARSTOW to VEGAS !!!!!!!
 :drums: :lol2: :flip: :zen: :dude: :chug: :thumb: :eek2: :sun: :flip:

The ride started with a short, maybe 15mi slab through Palmdale before we saw the 1st dirt. From there we headed N. into the vast California desert.

CIMG1738Copy-1.jpg

Thrasher posted a few of my pics already on the 'Upcoming Rides' thread so you might see a few of them again as well as a few of his and M's.

Many miles of very fast :eek2: sandy roads leading up into the mountains. We tried our best to stay as a group but if we got seperated we'd agreed to stop at crossroads and landmarks to regroup. Sometimes it was impossible as there was just so danged many bikes and the dust at some places was insane! It was so dusty at some places it was literally white-out conditions. It was almost as bad as the roads around JMZ's in Gonzales! :nana:

These pics are about an hour into the ride. We'd stopped to take a break.

We could always tell where we were going by scanning the horizon for the dust plume. From here the trail is heading up into the mountains. As with all pics, this doesn't show scale worth a darn, the mountain is much closer and bigger than it appears.

Another dusty section, luckily the bikes were getting a little more spread out by now so it wasn't nearly as bad as earlier in the day.

Not sure what time it was but we made it to Jawbone Canyon.

CIMG1754Copy.jpg

I'd seen pictures of this place through the years but had no idea the route would pass right by the place, that was cool! It was dark but we rode back by here after riding through Death Valley on the way back to Palmdale on Sunday night.

CIMG1752Copy.jpg

The ride officials warned us not to stop here for lunch if we wanted to get to the last checkpoint before dark so we ate granola bars and jerky and pressed on.

Our 2nd gas stop was in Ridgecrest before we started heading south towards Barstow. This is not far from where Thrasher lost his phone. We actually came back here 2 days later and FOUND IT! More on that later.:lol2:

IMG_0739Copy.jpg

And after one heck of a wild day we rode into Barstow just as the sun was setting. :sun:

CIMG1770Copy.jpg

But the fun wasn't over yet, we still had a lot to do when we got there. For example, have you ever loaded a roll chart? These things suck!! :headbang: If you don't get it just right it gets bunched up in there and won't turn so you have to pull the whole thing back out and start over. :miffed: :suicide:

CIMG1777Copy.jpg

This was the parking area across the street from the hotel. They had a really cool deal worked out with the local Boy Scouts Troop where for a small donation they watched your bike all night. They made a party out of it too with a fire pit, hot dogs and drinks for everybody, free coffee and hot chocolate. ;-) They were serious about security though, NOBODY entered that parking lot without a wristband and then they would follow you to your bike and compare your wristband with the # on the bike. This was one of the issues where M. and I switching bike # stickers caused a problem :lol2:, we had to both go up to the guys and explain the deal together but once we explained everything was cool.

CIMG1776Copy.jpg

The baggage check, this was real convenient. We had all of our clean clothes, personal items and whatnot waiting for us when we got there. Same in Las Vegas the next day. Trouble was, they only took it one way so we were responsible for getting it back to where we started from in Palmdade so instead of lugging all our dirty clothes and unnecessary crap back on the bikes we just shipped it home from the hotel in Las Vegas.

CIMG1772Copy.jpg

The maintenance area. All this was part of the entrance fee. They'd fix anything on any bike for free. Of course this only covered small stuff like oil filters and such but all labor was covered. They were adjusting valves, adjusting chains, changing tires, changing oil, fixing lights, you name it, they did it. None of us needed the service but it was very nice to have in case we did! :thumb:

CIMG1773Copy.jpg

CIMG1774Copy.jpg

Thrasher at the check-in. We had a blast with the officials. Lotta laughs!:lol2: They were the nicest, most helpful, professional people you could ask for. They did a wonderful job.

CIMG1778Copy.jpg

Gotta ride into town and check the mail, be back in a bit.

I was looking through the videos, great BTW, and I was left in a bit of a quandary.

In the shots that showed Meriden I didn't see his turn signal on in any of the shots. :brainsnap

Did you and Thrasher pull the flasher on his bike?

Was there an alien abduction and this wasn't actually Meriden? :eek2:

Or, was it just the wide-angle lens not showing the perpetually blinking turn signal?

Just thought this needed addressing . . . :duck:

:-P

Rman, cool pics. Makes me feel like I am still there. The funny thing is, your 25th pic is my trailer with 3 bikes on it. That is the parking lot at the host hotel in Palmdale. We did not unload them until Friday morning. Then had breakfast buffet in the hotel, then rushed over to the bike shop to get set up.
It was a crazy hectic morning, lines all over the place, one for toys for tots donation, one for rider packet, one for gps, and they all ran together and overlapped. But it was well run nonetheless. And I am in your 32nd pic in the store that morning.
I don't know you guys, but recognize each of you in the pics, I think we might have even talked in the parking lot the first night.
I think i have the picture posting worked out & will be doing that here shortly.

Great job R-man, really good report! Sounds like ya'll had the detail's worked out.

Two Smoke DS, the drive out is not that bad. I used to do it all the time, sometimes by myself. But now that I am older and wiser???, I have to sleep. So with a couple of friends, it worked out well, although sleeping in a truck's back seat is not really the best. It took us 22 hours to get there from Arlington, TX, driving straight out. We stopped once for a real sit down dinner in Wichita Falls, then pretty much gas and go the whole way. On Sunday morning, we left the Orleans hotel and headed straight back, eating at fuel stops or in the truck, and made it back from Vegas in 19 hours. We were pulling a trailer and were not speeding either way of the trip.
OK I am trying again with the pics, if it works, I know what to do to post others. This is the bike I used, recognize the place?
