Several of us escaped the oppressive Texas heat for a week of dual sporting in Colorado.

The excitement began for me when I hit South Fork and Hwy 149.

This awesome road takes you through Creede, over Slumgillion Pass and down to Lake City.

I was just talking to Uncle Buck about this ride this past Saturday.
 
We took Alpine road above town to Alpine plateau and Soldiers summit. Very twisty with awesome views.

We took a break only to discover Dahveed flatted his front.



We tried to repair it but soon discovered all our tool kits were missing the same tool. Guess what?

Off I went to fetch the Moto van.


 
Lake City is an off-roaders delight. Being on the Alpine Loop you get every conceivable conveyance from MTB’s to monster trucks. SxS’s are the weapon of choice. Most are rentals so you can imagine the type of operators!

Well-said. I was there a few weeks ago and enjoyed the little town. It's set up well for lots of people but there are lots of people and easily too many side by sides with drunk and obnoxious drivers.

How were the restaurants? Was it easy enough to get in for dinner without a long wait?
 
Close encounters! I’m in Lake City & buying Dahveeds gps gadget. Been riding all over - road 2 up & dirt. Lori & I endured a failed attempt of Elwood Pass near Pagosa Springs on the GS 1200. So Cinnamon Pass was a piece of cake a couple of days later.
Endless KTM dirt riding but Owl Creek Pass over to Ridgeway on the GS is beautiful.
 
I absolutely love that area, in the spring, summer, and fall :-P Not so sure I would like it in the winter :wary:

Was Poker Alice's reopened? I had heard it finally closed down around 2018. It was not open when we were there in July 2018.

It was quite busy, but still good and relatively quick.

On a family trip there back around 2015, we stayed at the Wagon Wheel Cabins in the middle of town next to the gas station. It is nothing real fancy, but they were clean and not expensive. Ours was a two room cabin with a sleeper sofa, perfect for the five of us.

We rented a jeep so I could take my wife and kids around the Alpine Loop. I have to say it is MUCH more enjoyable on a bike :-P
 
Great pictures! I was once told to never turn around on those passes... because the only thing worse than having to pass a SXS is having to pass it again.

My experiences have been mostly positive when encountering jeeps, atvs, and SxSs. There are always the occasional twits, so you do have to be careful. My worst encounter was heading up the West side of Engineer when a couple in some kind of "sport" truck thing made by Honda I think, were heading down and basically ran me off a switchback, causing me to go down, but not over the edge. They didn't even stop to check on me :thumbd:

I don't understand that statement. Full size trucks and jeeps pass each other all the time on those passes. A side by side is easier.
 
Creede / Lake City area is awesome. Been going there for 40 years and I still love it.
 
Concerning SXS vehicles, I think the person was referring to the number of them that get rented and then driven around like they're the only ones on the road and/or drunk. I have no idea really since I haven't been up there since before SXS's were a thing. I did think it was a bit funny since everyone I know who buys a SXS suddenly thinks they're Mario Andretti in the Baja.
