Rather than tag on to some of the other threads regarding COVID riding, here is my own. On May 1, Becky and I loaded up the truck and headed west to “get out of Dodge” as they say. We have no itinerary other than to stay away from the populous for a while. We are truck camping in National Forests. We started out in the Lincoln near Cloudcroft. Went through the Gila and are now near Alpine in the Apache in eastern Arizona. I must say that I have found some top notch dirt and paved roads in the Apache NF near the Big Lake area.

Currently, we are camped on FR249. An excellent paved road notwithstanding the 35 mph speed limit. It has many perpendicular dirt roads of all skill levels branching off. Good herds of Elk in this country. Forest Road 249 must be some popular bike route, perhaps even part of a BDR? Sitting in camp, we watched bikes and SxSs go by all day yesterday, Saturday. Anecdotally, there are 3 bikes. Harleys, Honda Goldwings, and the big KTMs (790, 1090s, etc). Every now and then you will see a foursome of DRz, WR and XRs go by. Here is a shot of Big Lake. That’s fresh snow in them thar hills!

The roads, loops and hiking trails back in here are as good as I have seen. Still too much snow to get through most of the high country (+11,000 feet). Today we are going to attempt a hike up to Taylor Lake, not to be confused with Taylor reservoir by Crested Butte.

Does anybody know what this would be used for? A huge fireplace on the side of road with no apparent building.

This is the area. You can see Taylor Lake on the map.
