Hola Mextrek Amigos!!
Cancelled. Covid is sinking its teeth in. Hotels are closing for the whole month of October. Sorry everyone!
This is the trip the would have been:
We will return to Galeana on Oct 24th for yet another installment of the classic Mextrek format. 4 days of riding in the amazing Sierra Madre Oriental mountains.
Mextrek #11 (Oct 24 - 27th): ~500 Miles 50% asphalt
Saturday Oct 24 - Mission to Galeana
Sunday, Oct 25 - Day rides out of Galeana
Monday, Oct 26 - Day rides out of Galeana
Tuesday Oct 27 - Return to Mission or....
Day of the Dead After Party V5.0 (Oct 27 - Nov 3): 801 Additional Miles - 80% asphalt
Please note: AP V5.0 welcomes riders who have been on a previous Mextrek or other Texas Adventure Riders Association rally, have been welcomed into the group by friends, or who I have spoken to personally (please call anytime). This is not a popularity or a cool guy contest, but rather a litmus test to ensure you have a solid skillset of riding ability, independent resourcefulness, and a positive attitude so you can ride hard, fix your own problems, stay out late and wake up earlyish, and contribute to the positivity and enjoyment of all others on the trip.
If you are new to Mextrek or the After Party I highly encourage you attend Uncle's Around the Bend or other TARA event and seek out the Mextrek regulars for riding and socializing. Uncle's is a great way to test your adv skills and prep prior to attending a Mextrek. That said...
Overwhelming response from our After Party V3.0 party crew was that Guanajuato is a not to be missed spot to witness Halloween in Mexico and spend a few days off the bikes. And spending Day of the Dead in Real de Catorce is the real spooky deal, after all, what's better than Day of the Dead in a historic ghost town? So here is the rough itinerary, subject to change...
Tuesday Oct 27 - Galeana to San Miguel 321 miles
Wednesday Oct 28 - San Miguel
Thursday Oct 29 - San Miguel to Guanajuato 63 miles
Friday Oct 30 - Guanajuato
Saturday Oct 31 - Guanajuato (Halloween - widely celebrated here)
Sunday Nov 1 - Guanajuato to Real De Catorce (actual Day of the Dead Celebration) 260 miles
Monday Nov 2 - Real de Catorce to Santiago / Mission 221 Miles
Tuesday Nov 3 - Santiago to Mission 146 Miles
This AP V5.0 is better suited to bikes that can cruise a highway at 65 to 70 MPH for 100 miles in a stretch. Comfort is key. In 2019 we had a KLR650, a WR450, and a slew of 690 / 701's that made the trek without issue. I'd only caution that comfort is more important that outright bike choice. If the idea of riding Houston to Austin to Dallas on your bike is a big fat NO, you might want to reconsider. For the record, that route is always a big fat NO for me, but in Mexico I take my lumps for the scenery and destinations.
