Saw this guy on the way to Colorado. Still in Texas.

He never moved no matter what I did. Seemed a little lethargic.

Stayed at this motel in historic Santa Rosa on old Route 66. Less than $40.00 including tax. We asked to see the room before paying and were pleasantly surprised.

We got a little rowdy and that's all I'm saying.

Our first ride on the road across from Black Bear Pass (parallel to 550)

Looking in awe!!

Near same spot. The road is less than 5 miles, I think.

Road going up Black Bear

Picture of a Jeep going up to give it a little perspective on how steep it is going up. Going down is steeper.

Person on the left is out of breath, the one on the right is happy to be on top of the world.

Beautiful pics!

We stayed at that same place in Santa Rosa the day I totalled my van on I-40 there. The van, or portions thereof, is probably still in a salvage yard there.

Sometimes my wife requested a short walk;-)

This is the road. We haven't seen anyone for 2 hours. We're alone. It's over 20 miles to pavement. I strip down to my skivvies and walk the bike across. 2 four wheelers drive up. A pickup truck drives up. 2 more four wheelers drive up. I put pants back on.

The reason for the flood.

The head waters of the Rio Grande River just before it flow into the Rio Grande Reservoir. Note the writing in the mud.

It's on the north side of the Rio Grande but I not sure what the writer is trying to say other than "HI"

We leave Lake City after 5:00 and have been over Cinnamon Pass before. Very few pictures.

Decided to eat here since it would be dark by the time we got to camp.

Stacked enchiladas. YUMMY
Note margarita: we stayed in Silverton an hour after eating

"How'd the non knobby tires do?"

They did OK. With my wife behind me, speed is not an option.

"Wow, two up on a loaded DRZ over those passes. I'm totally not worthy!"

Did you see the picture where she's walking? That happened at least once a day, twice over Black Bear and twice over Stony.

Even still...any length of time spent two up on a DRZ is impressive stuff regardless.

She got bruises her butt on our last day. No pictures.

More to come. Hope you enjoy!

Impressive to say the least. Your wife is quite the trooper. Poor hiney.

She did ask me to look how bad they were. Prettiest sight on the whole trip.

Decided for a short day today after about 140 miles yesterday. We're going for a soak in the hot springs tonight. A short ride is Maggie and Minnie Gulches. The first trail head is about 20 miles from camp.

Let's go to Middleton toilet.:rider:

Where we came from
P9150316_0130.jpg

Start of a deep canyon on the right. It will be nearly obliterated by trees but the sound of the creek will attest to how deep it actually is.
P9150319_0127.jpg

Getting closer to the top, above tree line and stopped for a peanut butter sandwich. Walking for exercise this time. She's diabetic and uses walking as 1 method of control.

Gear/pulley? at one of the abandoned mines
P9150324_0122.jpg

Ore crusher. The round "hammers" at the bottom of the vertical rods are moved up by a cam type mechanism then allowed to drop by gravity.
P9150326_0120.jpg

Cam mechanism and one of the flywheel pulleys
P9150328_0118.jpg

The pulley at the bottom of the picture has a twin on the right side of the crusher. Both were turned by steam engines which are missing. One boiler is still there and they may have shared a boiler or both may have been driven by one engine. Those 2 pulleys turned the large flywheels on the crusher.

I don't know how I got those pictures posted twice. This is my first ride report and I just learned how to post pictures. Sorry!
