New body...

This. Is. Frustrating.

I'm looking at Nikon's Capture NX-D, Luminar 2018, LR 6 (last standalone) and going the CC route. It's just hard to commit to something that I know will be 10 bucks a month for the rest of my processing days.

Bill, the last standalone version, version 6, was updated in December and was announced to be the last standalone version. It would work with his new camera, but is a dead product. Cloud version is $120 for a year, if paid in advance, and includes Photoshop, LR Classic CC (store data local) and LR CC (stores only in cloud). The later is less useful to pros right now, but the Classic CC is a re-branding last year's CC and is like the standalone. I don't like the monthly payments so I do yearly. Hits about the same time as my Smugmug yearly payment. I'm okay with it because the features of the subscription version keep increasing. If it were a static product, I wouldn't be happy. The old standalone did camera updates and bug fixes, but you had to buy a new version to get new features. Scott managed to skip version 6 by not buying a new camera and not getting sucked in by the minimal new features standalone 6 offered (mainly a better image process engine). The CC version of 6 added some very useful features and now a bunch of speed improvements and masking options.
Don't get me wrong, I certainly see that there are benefits to having constant updates. For me, I am not a power-user of any of the photo editing programs to justify $10 per month, or whatever it comes out to annually. I paid for a standalone Lightroom when I upgraded to my D750 to get the camera support but so far I am happy as can be with what I have now. I know that if I ever played with the newest one I would look back and wonder how I could ever live without it but you don't know what you don't know, right? :lol2:

I'm not sure I can tell the difference and it looks pretty good to me. If anyone is interested (Rusty/TM/Duke) I'll send the RAW and .jpg file and you can pixel peep too/comment.

It looks fine to me, but I have old eyes.... Tomorrow I'll try to run over to the airport and see if I can try to not get kicked out taking pictures with the D500. Which reminds me - I need to go charge that battery and get it out of the box. lol

:tab I'm thinking those look pretty good. I can maybe see there being an issue with some of the early morning and late evening pics you guys were doing at the Bosque place. But seriously, with the incredible high ISO performance of these new bodies, would even that really matter much? You'd be so far from your subject that depth of field would be pretty large anyway, so you can just shoot at f/5.6 and 1/600 or so and just let the ISO float until you decide you can't handle the noise. My D750 does really well with capturing shadow details even when I underexpose by one or two full stops. It would mean a bit more work in LR, but that would also help keep the ISO a bit lower.

Adobe gets my $10/month, and I've come to live with it. Of course, as a consumer I wish they never would have gone to this model, but this is the way of the future for everything. :-|

Duke convinced me to just pony up and do it. It's one restaurant margarita a month...... So tmr hopefully I'll hook up with Rusty and we'll chat as well as get my subscription going.

So here's a shot with the D500, 20TCEiii and 70-200. Run through Luminar (which i'm still trying to figure out....) Not great IMO. 600mm equivalent with this setup.... Will have to figure out the weak link and I'm leaning towards the 2x?

You may want to hold off a couple of days. I'm officially contagious. What I thought was allergies yesterday is not.

So what is it about the shot above that you don't like? Is it a lack of super sharpness? Colors? Something else?

It's just not crisp on the edges.... The more Duke and I looked at it, we think it could be some mirage going on with the heat of the runway shimmering up. It today clears up I might try to get the D500 out with just the 70-200 and see what happens.

"built in 1.4x teleconverter" 'splain that to me, please. Is it just a 1.4x + 90x200 in one body?

From what I gather, it's a 180-400 f/4 native with a built in TC to make it's potential 252-560 should the user decide to do that. The TC will be 'mated/paired' for the 180-400 so in essence should be a better option than just a 200-400 with the generic 1.4TC. Or so the comments go.....

Price is in on the new 180-400 f/4... ONLY $12,399!

:eek2:
