Thanks so much Sander for opening up the ride to every one and putting together a great event. The overnight location was very cool (I'd like to explore more there) and glad I know about it now. Here are a few photos.

Six of us broke into a group and hung throughout the whole ride both days. Great bunch and glad I got to hang with 'em.

Rural roadside set-up

One of the buildings at Fort Clark.

Canyon hangout and rest spot.

Our lunch spot in one of the canyons.

Starting off on day two.

Darn all the heavy fog/mist - I cant see a thing.

Quick stop.

You get all the dust riding in the back.

Oops, somehow the front wheel lifted again.

Ridin'.

Looks like everyone had fun, sorry I had to miss it. Had a training class all day Saturday - maybe next time. At least I get to go to Big Bend next month.

First dual sport ride, won't be the last. Couldn't ask for a better group of people to ride with. Thanks to all.

What can you say except it was one h___ of a ride :thumb::flip:. I'll post some pictures later today. Sander, my man, you did it again. Wish I had your way with scheduling the weather as well as the ride. (except you could have skipped the fog-heavy mist Sunday morning) What a great bunch of riders with you and multisurface rider keep us all in line. Glad no one was REALLY  hurt although I'm still waiting to hear the final on MossRider. (MR hope you are up and about today.) Didn't get to spend a lot of time with the Houston riders this trip but some great riders. THANKS to ALL for making this such a fantastic ride.

Re: Nueces Canyon Adventure ride 3, "New Bill BBR" January 29 & 30, 2011 ride report

HONESTLY....I had every intention of throwing in with a group and riding the Nueces Canyon ride. Left the house at 5:30 (it's still seriously dark then) and headed south by southwest to historic Castroville. Most reasonable folks were still fast asleep so I made really great time and decided to stop for a bite. Should have passed on that second plate of IHOP, though. Just because it's an "all-you-can-eat" doesn't mean you have to.

Sailed over the old rio Medina through town headed out to Sander's place. Saw a big line of pigs lined up outside the taco-r-us shop and several anxious riders as I went by. Had to go unload the bike, gear up and beat it on back into town, quick. Seems like it took -f o r e v e r- to get rolling but finally off to join the group. Figured they'd be staggering out smaller groups for a while anyway.

Back at taco grande, not a pig in sight. They'd all vanished, gone, disappeared, no longer there. Oh well...no problema...have the route on Carmen the Garmin so I'll just ride quick like a bunny and catch up with them. Everybody always stops after a little bit to tighten down the straps, right? The route started along cypress lined banks of the old Medina river. Some of that stuff runs in my blood. Then out among the rich farmland and vegetable fields of the winter garden. They're harvesting red cabbage now and it must be migration time for big gray cranes. Huge flocks of the things in all directions.

Still no bikes. Wow! These folks must be really fast. I've been on the throttle for a long time and there ain't a bike anywhere to be seen. Surely that coffee is bound to catch up with them sometime. And it's cold out here too. Speaking of all that coffee...

Wheeled on into Sabinal...still no bikes, no riders, no one. A church group was having a bake sale on the corner so went over and asked if a bunch of noisy motorcycles had gone by this morning. A beautiful older hispanic lady assured me they hadn't. I love the traditional families of south Texas. A certain friendliness, honor, pride and dignity in these people that stands out in today's world.

Downtown Sabinal is historically neat. They've maintained the spirit and architecture of old west Texas. Found this wait station so...I waited...and waited...and waited some more. But, there were some interesting things...

wait.jpg

See, it really is a wait station. :)

wait2.jpg

Found a window to the past.

window.jpg

After a while I heard that lovely low rumble of bikes in the distance!
Sure enough, in contrast to the old stage coach line coming through town, the first group had arrived. They said the group had gone to the ridge before taking to the trail. I wasn't behind everyone...figures. They asked if I'd like to join in with them and they'd wait up ahead for me. I told them to go ahead...I'd catch up. Rolling out of town, Carmen took a wrong turn that put me just far enough behind the group that I didn't catch up for quite a while. Those guys sure ride fast.

Bit of pavement before finding some dirt. Kept hoping those clouds would part and let some warm sunshine in.

clearing.jpg

Got hungry so started looking for a place to sit back and have some lunch. Nice stream side spot. Figured a group would come by sooner or later that I could join up with.

lunch-1.jpg

Found co. rd 408 and Tularosa. These were a couple of out-n-backs. Nice trails. Finally gave up on the sun and stopped to put on some more clothes. Figured a big group was sure to catch up with me while standing around buck naked out in the middle of no where. No bikes showed up but some locals came over to giggle at this shivering disrobed curiosity.

cows.jpg

This old gal could use some groceries...or some relief.

badcow.jpg

Just got back underway when, ZOOM...ZOOM...ZOOOOM...three bikes blast right past me. It was the first group again and these boys were throwin the coal to those bikes. I fell in line and rode along until the bike in front of me suddenly swung to the ditch.

Everyone dutifully stops. Seems the dude was conducting some applied research on just how far a WR450 can go on one tank of gas. I think he was bout ready to publish his results, too. After laying the Yamer over on it's side, we're back on black...for maybe another mile or two.

Back in the ditch...horizontal...shake the bike while chanting mogas ritualistic plea to the petroleum deities. (shouldn't be repeated here) After that we all limped into Bracketville and find GAS! The WR had no liquid in it's clear little fuel line. I think it sucked the fumes right out of that tank. That's close enough!

Most of the group had accommodations at the Fort Clark Inn. Nice looking place. I stood around the check-in flurry and visited with them a bit. I asked what time they planned to leave in the morning. Pretty early. They were from Houston and needed to roll fast to get back. It was still pretty early so I decided to head on up the trail a piece further. Figured I'd catch up with them as they went by the next morning.

clear2.jpg

Rolled into camp and started setting up. This was my first experience in motorcycle camping. Sure beats carrying stuff on my back.

case.jpg

camp1.jpg

I've humped backpacks all over the US...that's been a while ago. These new generation tents and inflatable pads are technological magic...wish they'd been around back when.

camp2.jpg

Went out to see what I could see.

berries.jpg

Beautiful little berries. We call these cedar trees. They're not but that's what we call em. When these little gems start popping - and they literally do - it brings untold misery on the masses each season. Sure pretty to look at, though.

The hill country has lots of caves. Back in ancient times our Explorer post used to go spelunking. We'd have jumped down this one so fast we'd have bounced.

cave.jpg

Just about sunset - clearing began to the west.

clear3.jpg

fence.jpg

The Allmighty can put on one heck of a show sometimes.

sunset.jpg

Tummy started rumbling again so it must be time to mozy back to camp and see what's fer supper.

supper.jpg

This little thing is like your own personal GE gas turbine. It plain gets it!

stove.jpg

After a spectacular sunset, things started getting down right chilly as night set in. Clear sky you know. Time to spark up the furnace.

fire1.jpg

Dryer lint mixed with a dab of petroleum jelly in a baggie is hard to beat.

fire2.jpg

Oh alright! It IS cheating... What'd you expect...banging rocks together for a spark?

firelite.jpg

Now, a word about quiet. This place is. Not some sort of low level background noise "quiet." I mean the profound total absence of any sound whatsoever. The kind that makes the noise of blood rushing through your ears loud. No bugs, no birds, no engines, no sirens, no aircraft...uncanny deafening silence. Takes some getting used to.

The horizon to horizon stars were indescribable. I won't even try. I wanted to take a picture but I guess they were just too far away.

I tell you, the Allmighty can humble all.

stars.jpg

Snuggling down in a warm sleeping bag...finally, some sounds. Crickets chirping in the distance. It's still so quiet that I hear puffing sounds of the fire's dying flames...soft and rhythmic. Time to call it a day on this leg of the Nueces Canyon ride.

Sorry I had to bail on Day 2. Nothing related to my previous "Nueces Canyon ride #2 crash". Just post surgery stomach issues. I had a great time on Day 1 and glad I met a lot of new riders to for this area. GREAT JOB Sander! I'm still looking forward to the Big Bend ride. If someone wants to share a trailer ride up for my KLR and hotel for the 2 nights we will be there let me know.

PS: If you think the fog was bad on your ride, I was doing 5 MPH on I-90 about 20 miles east of Bracketville until it finally cleared up around 0930. Got home at 10:30 AM, wet and cold.

" The Burning Bush " - So Im following Multisurface Rider down Seco Creek Rd. were tooling down the trail having a ton of fun & all of a sudden we could see what looked to be this BIG clump of cedar/juniper tree's smoldering/smoking like it was on fire, I looked for a property owner but did'nt see anyone & thought who would set a fire and leave?, then as we got closer we realized it was'nt smoke at all, it was a big cloud of "MOUNTAIN CEDAR!" Yike's ! hold your breath! It was the biggest baddest cedar pollen cloud I've ever seen, Unbeliveable! We held our breath & gassed it to get away from the HUGE pollen cloud, It was big & you could see the wind shaking the top's of the tree's in every direction, Wow...That was a sight to see.

"BEWARE of the FOG!" - We started off sunday morning with HEAVY FOG, lot's of moisture in the air, I had to wipe my goggle's every five second's. The fog was getting thicker, Viseability was very poor...it was hard to see five feet in front of you, If you look closely you can see the fog in this post. We were moving at a snail's pace about 5-m.p.h. in case any DEER or CATTLE ran out in front of us which they did (deer) and we did not collide. Then after about an hour & a half the fog started to lift & we could see where we were going, the fun was about to begin! It turned out to be a beautiful day & it was an AWESOME RIDE! - :sun:

HANCOCK - Not enough XR-650L's showed up. Three cancellation's @ the last minute. But it was still FUN! I crashed twice trying to keep up with those KLR-650's(sander & calvin) I believe there were three XR-650L's on this ride, there would have been more if you would have been there. :thumb: When you gonna join us? :rider:............P.S. Great mix of bikes on the ride.

There were at least one each of GSs 1150 & 1200, KTM 625 & 690, Husaburg, DRZ400, XR-L, KLR, BMW G650, WR450, CRF450X, DR650, V-Strom, KLX250, etc...

I really like this shot, the Big GS taking on Cedar Creek!

Re: Nueces Canyon Adventure ride 3, "New Bill BBR" January 29 & 30, 2011 ride report

DAY TWO got off to an early start...

Sometime around 3am I woke to the sound of a raid in progress. Three masked bandits were hard at work prying open the pelican boxes. These guys obviously worked together as a team. Smooth coordinated moves...this was a crew of hardened pros for sure.

Fearful to leave the security of my warm sleeping bag, I hit em with the only weapon at hand...a high powered LED hoping to startle them away. They seemed to appreciate the help of some light, looked over my way, snorted and ignored me as they kept right on with their work. My wife has done this to me for years so I took it better than might be expected.

All that's left of last nights embers. Still nippy this morning and I'm out of wood. Have to get up and move.

Backpacker's moto; Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but prints and make it just a little better than when you came.

Not far over to pickup the trail. Just getting interesting when things started shaking loose. Now, that's more like it! Lonely out here...hope a group comes by soon.

Finally got in some time on the pegs.

Looks ominous...not so much, really.

gate1.jpg

gate2.jpg

These gates seem to happen just below the crest of each hill. The roads are way loose gravel and catching some air or a little slide on that hill can make for soiled undies when a gate suddenly waits just ahead. Some poor rascal found out the hard way.

Down hill with off camber and loose gravel. I couldn't have designed a better bike trap. Poor bugger never had a chance. That would be a desperate skid...right into those thorns.

This passes all qualifications of a first rate west Texas thorn bush. Hope that dude was wearing some good gear! Hurts to even imagine.

Mossy...if I'd have backed up with the camera just a little, you'd see another set of skid marks...mine. That gate is just plain evil! Talk about coming out of no where...dang sure good for focusing one's attention and keeping you honest. :eek2:

Glad to know it turned out better than it looked.

Sander, Yak, that is Kickapoo. Just about five miles north of the Cedar Ck. entrance. Very small.

I had so much fun on Nueces 2 how could I miss Nueces Canyon Adventure ride 3.

1173505519_3K2Ko-M.jpg

A few of my DS riding partners were going to trailer over Friday night or early Saturday morning from Houston. I decided to take off Friday and ride over its only 200 miles and the GX was in need of a nice long ride.
I camped Friday night at the Castroville Regional Park it's more like a city park than a campground but I had to stay somewhere and this beats a hotel.

Day 2

I was up early since I went to bed at around eight o'clock the night before. I should have gone to town and picked up a book or something to do but hindsight is 2020. Although I spent a lot of time in the tent it was hard to sleep because of all the streetlights. The other riders would be meetings at Taqueria San Juan for breakfast in Castroville at 9 AM so I did a little scouting before I headed over.

Found this up a dirt road south of town.

There were 23 bikes parked at the restaurant that,s to many for one group. The five of us eating together decided to ride together.

David volunteered to lead the group and he did a great job.

I woke to a crisp cool morning after a wonderful night of sleeping. Packed and loaded up the GX for one more day of riding. I don't know about you guys but every time I get ready to ride I'm excited as a kid at Christmas. Hope I never lose that feeling but after 30 years it's still there.

Packed and ready to go.

Our group was going to eat breakfast at Daddy's Grill so on the way I stopped to say hello to some of the other riders eating in town. The name escapes me but here are a few photos on the inside.

We had to wait for Daddy's to open but it was worth the wait. (Again great food)

Leaving town

Off to my right I saw this cloud being blown over the mountain/Hill. I did not know it at the time but we would be riding through that cloud.

Doesn't look so bad in the photo but we had to slow down because of the fog.

30 minutes later the sun burned through and it was a beautiful day.

What do you think a few nails and a coat of paint to make her new again?

Here is one of the many water crossings.

David lost his balance and dropped his bike of course I had to get a picture. LOL

What a group effort
1173351893_msksk-M.jpg

This is a bump gate their not really designed for motorcycles. I think we had to go through about 15 of them. But our fearless leader David held most of them open for us.

Nice road

One more water crossing.

Even the last road was dusty

When we finished our last section of dirt we stopped and said our goodbyes. David would be heading towards Austin from here. Joe, Larry and Bob would take pavement back to Castroville where their trucks were waiting. Mike and I rode the bikes home.

Somewhere headed east on I 10 as the sun set behind me.

Thanks so much to Sander for putting together a great event I had a great time. Also big thanks to David who led us around for the whole weekend. Sorry I could not meet and talk to everyone but there's always next time.

Rick was kind enough to invite us to his camp. Perfect night for a fire, story telling and a few beers.

Road side.

David and I (me photo'd) spent some time in the Fort Clark museum as a englishman gave us the low-down. Really cool history there!

Passing through another oak grove.

Weestrom rejects rider.

David does a great roll and on feet in no time. Weestrom must deal with fast pace again.....

Looking forward to riding with y'all again. Man, it was fun!

Weestrom rejects rider.

....Mike

I had skidded to a stop and was standing there for about 5 to 10 seconds as Bob raced up to try and help me save it from a ~40 degree tilt. Where I came to a stop at the edge of the road, the ground was about 6" lower than the length of my right leg. Bob had actully pulled up next to me and held out his hand to help me but I could not let go of the bars. Bob then decided to get off his bike to help me bring it from a ~40 degree tilt back to vertical (in the picture), but I just ran out of strength to hold the tilt with all that weight high in the back. I just gave up and let it drop and took a dive off to the right.
Good times.
