I am leaving soon to fly from Amarillo, Texas, to Washington DC to pick up a new- to- me- too- good- a- deal- to- turn- down bike.
This, I think, is bike number 365, for me. I quit counting years ago. I have had a LOT of bikes, currently own 21, I think......
I turned 70 in April, and I was thinking of hanging up the bikes, I have lost so many friends.
I was mulling it over, and realized I have lost as many friends sitting on their couch, staring at the TV, as I have out riding their bikes,......Living.
Anyway, the day I decided to keep my fleet, and keep riding, a very good friend made me a Deal I couldn't turn down.
My friend at 75, is still rdidng, and had an extra bike he wasn't using.
2008 Softail Deluxe.
He had added an aftermarket Batwing fairing, larger ( than the OE leather ) bags, a phone holder, True Dual pipes and brand new Michelins. Also, an aftermarket Tour Pack. My friend was looking to downsize from his ultra, due to the weight, and had put this bike together as a lighter Touring bike.
He rode it from Maryland to California and put 14K miles on it, then, he took over payments on a brand new Ultra, to save his son's Credit rating.....
He called me and asked if I would be interested in a "Smokin deal", as he knew I was missing my FLH Standard.
08 Softail Deluxe, 14,000 miles,3 windshields, 3 seats, 3 sets of saddlebags, including the original leather bags, original exhaust system, (he had installed True duals) brand new Michelins, and a fresh, Full service. $4000.
I jumped at my friend's offer, as I have never ridden any of the Eastern USA. I have ridden most of the Western, US, but, not the East. Now, I will.
My friend worked at the White House for 27 years and knows DC like the back of his hand, so, he is going to give me the Tour of Our Nation's Capitol.
I will be on a fairly short time frame to spend there, so, I have asked him to just drive me past the White House, Washington monument, etc.
I did insist on ONE FULL DAY at the Udvar-Hazey Air and Space Museum. I am a Space Nerd, and a retired aircraft mechanic, so the Air and Space Museum is a no-brainer. Also, he insists that we visit The Wall Viet Nam Memorial, and I am in.
After I leave DC, I will ride up into Pennsylvania to visit a good buddy and look around, then, I will turn back south, to North Carolina, to visit Matt and the Crew at WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM. That Museum is number one on my Bucket list.
After the Museum, I will meander back to Texas, stopping in several places to visit Moto-Buds and just kind of Celebrate my 56 years on two wheels.
When I get home, I will remove the bat wing, and hard bags, and re-install the original, smaller leather bags, and the original winshield. I will also remove the Tour Pack.
If and when I decide on another road trip, I can quickly install the Touring accessories my friend had installed.
I finally made my plane reservations, yesterday, and was surprised I can fly out to DC from Amarillo for only $280.
I am an aircraft mechanic who doesn't like to fly, but, I figure the 5 hour flight out will be worth the great ride home I am expecting.
