Photo Assignment #4: Night

I saw a sight last night on the way back from the Tarrant county M&G that I am going to try to capture on pixels tonight.

I did not have the camera with me (DOH!) and would have startled the group if I had pulled a quick, unannounced U-turn anyway.

Here's a few more from the other night. Comments appreciated!

Does anyone else think Janet's Hotel Hafen pic looks like the building in front is ready for lift-off with it's super-deluxe beanie propeller?

yes and I think your pic of the sign for the Austin Motel looks inappropriate. :eek2:

Like the "Docs" pic the best.
The second--nothing really catches my eye except maybe a color or two.
Poser ruined the third pic for me. :lol2:
Seriously, the third pic I would crop it to portrait orientation down to to sign and lobby area only. The rest is distracting to me.

This was what we rode past last night.... It is the methane flume from an old capped off landfill. Of course last night was dry and calm, tonight windy and rain. You would have laughed at me with an umbrella in one hand keeping the camera and lens dry while adjusting and shooting with the other. I shot several dozen images and this one jumped off first as it seems almost to have a skull in it. I will go through all tomorrow to see which strikes me as the best.

Here is the same image tweaked a smidge in Picasa to bring out the flames a bit. Does it make it better?

Hmmmm...... I never thought of it that way. That's Austin "weirdness" at it's finest.

Docs I thought turned out good. I'll agree the patio didn't do much except for the colors as you mentioned.

OK, let's try the cropping as you suggest.

so, what do YOU think of it cropped vs. uncropped? :trust:

I like it cropped. My flames in post 60 slipped back a page very fast! Is the brightened up image better than the original?

I like it cropped better. Cropping is something I really need to work on.

I like the enhanced flame color in the rework. Was that a hand-held shot? I think the flames could be more defined/vivid if frozen a tad bit more. Maybe a faster shutter speed to make that happen?

It was tripod in a gusty wind. Shutter was 1/100th, ISO 800 and aperture 5.6 with the lens zoomed to 300mm. Before the contest is done I may take some more trips and try to get closer. The long lens and windy night combined with the rain may have contributed to some issues. I was about 100 yards from the subject. I may have to go back before sunset to see if I can legally get closer!

This is fun!

edit... I see what you are saying. Even though I should be asleep by now,,, I am playing here...

I shot a few pictures at 1/200th, not many. The light meter was flashing that I was way out of range, but it is looking like under exposing works well for getting a black sky background. I'll give you three guesses where I will be tomorrow night!

Nice one, Mark. :thumb:

Ed, I still haven't seen the flame thingie - I assume you saw it off I820.
A couple of folks said it was an old landfill near Randol Mill (east side) near an RC flying field. I've ridden RM a bunch of times but never seen a land fill or RC field. Are they across the street from Temple CA?

It is further west from that one. The road name changes to East First before you get to it. The flume is south of the road, just east of the narrow bridge, but west of where it widens out near Oakland.

I've got a lot to learn about night photography

Gary,
What made the star holes from about the 3 to 7 o'clock position a different color? That's interesting how that happened. I assume that's an exterior garage light?
