Well LicketySplit and I went on a pre-Easter day ride yesterday. I'd put together a little DS (Dirt Search) route starting at Llano up through and around Cherokee, San Saba, Richland Springs and back. It was in the low 50s when we headed out and they had had 1/2" of rain the night before. Getting cold, wet and slopping through mud were distinct possibilities. We said, 'we're going anyway', and we were glad we did.
Not all my route panned out, but some of it was just what we were looking for.
The first notable road was Baby Head Road. No, not this kind of baby heads.
This kind.......
Turned out to be a long, fairly interesting and mostly dirt county road. Worth running again for sure.
Baby Head Creek
Decent view........
Next notable was Regency Bridge. At Stevo's suggestion, I had extended my route slightly to include it. Of course I plugged a ghost county road in there (bad route master) and that threw us off course.
Ah, excuse me. Oh, will you excuse me? I'm just trying to find the bridge! Has anybody seen the bridge? Please! Have you seen the bridge? I ain't seen the bridge! Where's that confounded bridge? (The Crunge, Led Zeppelin) Oh...nevermind...we found it!
Man that chest protector makes me look chunky!!
Lots of turtles hanging about, some big ones too! If Billie Joe McAllister had jumped off this bridge he would have been turtle chow posthaste. Way too many touristas walking around gawking at our righteous rides parked in the middle of the bridge, so we couldn't linger.
Next we headed to Richland Springs.
Off County Road 246. Had a spiffy concrete low water crossing spot too. Got some good air coming up out of the far side!
OK. After this is where I accidentally forgot my phone could take photos (bad trip reporter).
I had scoped out gas and food at the Coyote Station and General Store (open Sat 9-2). We were late. They were closed up tight. At this juncture, Lickety taught me something new. You know that sticker on your tank that says 'Premium Unleaded Only'. That is bona fide misinformation. Coyote Station had locks on the premium unleaded nozzles, but the regular unleaded was unlocked and working. Thank you Jesus! I'd still be somewhere out in the Cherokee wilderness waiting for my wife to come get me. My Yammi digested that tank of regular without missing a beat.
Oh yeah food!! A lovely local lady pointed us to The Feedlot - beer, cornhole boards, pizza and burgers. No time for cornhole, but one beer and a great burger with fries hit the spot. Good food and friendly folks, if you find yourself in need in Richland Springs.
Next we discover another ghost county road in my route. OK I'm seriously embarrassed this time, and the re-route equaled way too much pavement. But, after we recovered the route again it yielded some gems. FM1030 south, off of US190 near San Saba, turns into County Rd 310 and delivers miles and miles of dirt. Hitting a few more county roads in between got us down to SH71. There we headed back east and picked up County Rds 410 and 343 north back toward Cherokee. Good roads and good views, especially on 410.
Worked our way back to Llano from there. This for Stevo, the low water crossing over the Llano on County Rd 102 is open again. No I don't have a photo. You'll just have to trust me.
The weather turned out to be perfect.....risk-reward realized. Great day of riding, no mishaps, good food and a good riding partner. Man I'm ready to retire so I can do this all the time!!
