:tab I managed to get out yesterday with my son, Daniel, on my 1200 GS. We did about 150 or so miles of mostly dirt roads. It was a beautiful sunny 77 F day... until we pulled out of the driveway. Almost immediately it became totally overcast and windy. Fortunately, the temp never got below about 74 F. Daniel was wearing a mesh jacket with short sleeves, so even at 74 F he was getting a bit chilled. We stopped at C&J's BBQ over on the edge of College Station. The food is great. The ribs are heavenly...

:tab We did a lot of backtracking to get home. Various types of white trees and red buds are blooming all over the place. Many flowers are already coming up. Most of the pastures are turning a deep green. In some places, there was a STRONG sweet smell, with a tinge of bitter, almost like a scented cleaning spray. I think it was some of the white trees that were in full bloom and clustered next to the roads. Given all the rain in recent weeks, there was a lot less mud than I would have expected. However, the roads were really rough with some serious potholes and ruts. The county has been out laying down TONS of that large grey gravel, probably 1" - 1-1/2" in size. I am sure it is great for trucks and cars, but it is a challenge on a bike, especially in corners! All in all, it was a great ride. Daniel had a blast despite the bumpiness. It was so fun I forgot to stop and take a single picture

Took the Strom out for a short 40 mile loop. Tried to stay on county roads. Turns out all that rain isnt dried out yet. I didnt take pics of the worst areas as i tend to just vacate those areas as best I can. One spot had waist deep ruts and a center section that was smooth like a doser belly had drug over it. That's where I turned around.

Some areas I had to get off and push while I spun the back tire to make forward progress wound up cutting a good sized section off the loop.

Front fender got so packed with mud that it stopped the front tire a few times. When i finally got back on pavement I smelled burning rubber. Pulled over and cleared what i could with a stick and pocket knife. Was so bad that a section of tire had gotten so hot it was sticky to the touch.

Next time I'll Wait a week before going out on those roads lol

That mud is more like what I was expecting to see when I was out Saturday. I was amazed at how dry the roads were after all the rain we've been having. Can't say I was disappointed though :-P

Took the GS out Friday since the Strom is down waiting parts. Found out one phase of the stator is dead :/ so now it's down waiting parts.

TORN had their first race of the year down in Cash about 20 miles away. Went down there and rode the big bike course on the TW200 during the practice time. Had a blast but I'm sure the little TW's fork and shock are going to feel that tomorrow.

Short 2 hour ride looping up to Bonham SP and back. Rescued a turtle from the middle of the road and found historical cemeteries every 10 miles it seemed. Found an abandoned county road in Fanin county. Was going to explore it but lots of recent rain and being alone I decided to stick to pavement today. Rounded it out woth a cold one at Corner Street Pub.

A 1 liter Nalgene bottle of water in the main compartment. And some fiberforce fix (cast material to repair levers and what not) and some zip ties in the small outer compartment.

After this week's torrential rains, the flowers and trees were smiling with greeness. I took a zip around the hill country and enjoyed the cooler weather.

...of course there is always the proverbial lunch break!

I've got my mojo working

Saturday was a busy day and I had no plans to ride but, I need to go to a benefit BBQ for a young man in my local community. I have known his family for most of my life and wanted to show support for him and his family. The event was at Schroeder Hall, the second-oldest dance hall in Texas, was constructed and opened for business in 1890. I decided to put the top box on the Strom and go grab a few plates to go. Now Schroeder Hall is only 11 miles from house according to Google or Garmin. I however was going to use my trusty GPS (Gary Positioning System) as it is far more familiar with the back roads of the area and generally manages to at least double the distance to local locations.I was just about ready to walk out the door when my son Colton arrived home.

Colton recently took the MSF basic course. He has not gotten the “M” on his license yet as he has to take a riding test at the DMV since he is under 18 and time constraints with school have prevented the testing. I recently acquired a WR250R for his first road going bike. I think to myself as he passes me in the kitchen, this is great opportunity for him to get his feet wet riding on the road. So I say gear up and ride with me to grab some BBQ plates. He says on the Strom and I say no on your bike. Wide eyes and a smile on his face but a hint of reservation in his voice. I assure him and his mother that he will be fine with out the "M" on his license.

I give a few instructions and we head out. I can tell he is a little nervous we first take off. I set a nice easy pace watching him in my mirror. He did really well and begin to loosen up a flow as time went by. We only did about 35 mile total but, he got his feet wet and is better prepared for his riding test. I hope to have many days rolling along with Colton.

I can’t believe I only took one pic. Here is downtown Meyersville, Tx in front of the general store.

MEYERSVILLE
Community opened by Peter Bluntzer, an 1843 settler drawing many others from Alsace; named for Adolph Meyer, an 1846 arrival, at whose home post office was established (1851). Lutheran and Catholic churches were founded in 1850s. Public school opened in 1899. Famous turkey-producing area. Population reached peak about 1923.
The marble plaque near the top of the store says it was founded in 1868 and this building was 1917.

That's awesome bwdmax ! ! ! You will truly treasure these moments. Both my boys ride (24 and 27) and when we can all get together and ride, it just makes my day that much better ! ! !

I was on call this weekend, so had to stay close to the house. I went and found some muddy backroads to play on:

Then went out to the lake:

Then back to Maypearl to meet some buddies for a breakfast taco:

bdwmax,

its not the pictures you take, but the memories you make.

Thanks. He is already asking if we can go ride Friday evening.:rider:

Well, BobFelicci finally gave me a call and we met up for a nice evening ride after the rains let up. Had a great time...but I THOUGHT he had seen the last video because he brought an awfully big bike out into the muck. :lol2::clap::trust:

The video is on my Google Drive: https://goo.gl/nKgyod

Nice! I want to try something like that on my Africa Twin.

I figure if the NC700x can make it, the AT should be able to.

After missing the Tenere-acity of Strom-a-thon and the Junction ride due to weather, I couldn't resist taking advantage of the good weather on Monday and Tuesday to make a quick trip to the Mena, Arkansas area.

The Talimena Scenic Byway was fairly deserted, perhaps because it was a weekday, and not everyone is retired. [emoji12]

While there were quite a few RVers, I was the only tent camper at Queen Wilhelmina State Park.

No other tourists were at the old fire tower either.

I was wishing for my canoe and fishing rod when I rode to a remote section of the Ouachita River.

The views on the byway are quite nice.

I love to ride up in the Ouachita National Park area. We usually ride out around the Mt. Ida area because the paved roads are spectacular and so are the dirt logging roads. Falls on the little Missouri are real pretty as well.
