Decided to take my KLR650 on her first real dual-sport run. Left Killeen early AM Sat morning and headed to Pandale, TX where we have a deer lease and to ride some of the dirt roads in the area. Headed down Hwy 190 towards Menard where I was going to start my county roads run. FM 2092 out of Menard turns into "Four Mile Road" which was a dirt road that was suppossed to hook back up with Hwy 190:
Well it ended in about 3 miles but I should have seen this hint earlier on:
After backtracking to Hwy 190, I continued west and took Hwy 864 towards Fort McKavitt. From there I got on CR-245 towards Sonora. That was a nice long, fairly easy dirt road, passed FM2596 where it turns into CR-202 which I took into Sonora.
From there did a brief run along I-10 and then exited the Caverns Rd and continued south:
FM 1989 turns into CR-410 (Old Juno Rd). I missed the turnoff to continue south and had to backtrack again:
Old Juno Rd ends up at Hwy 189 which I followed SW towards Hwy 163 towards Juno. First sign of trouble when I got on 163:
They have had a lot of rain and it was raining on/off most of the day but this water crossing must have been a lot worse earlier on to close the road:
Found Juno Rd W and encountered this water xing right off:
It was nice to have a tall bike going through this as it was a little deeper than it appeared. My first time on Juno Rd W and it was a nice dual-sport road. Not a soul around anywhere. Made it to the famous crossroads and headed towards Pandale:
Heading south on Langtry Rd I had my first mishap. The concrete crossing looked dry with just a little water on the southend as I approached, but it was covered in silt and algae and down I went
Luckily the previous owner hardened this gal up and I got away with just a bent footpeg:
Stayed the night at our deer cabin and enjoyed a nice rainy night with friends, good steaks, and the correct amount of adult beverages
Next morning I headed out west down Fielder Draw Rd:
With all the rain, I encountered more than my fair share of mudholes:
Of course sometimes the mud won!
Finally made it to Hwy 349 and headed north to Iraan. From there I just followed Hwy 190 back to Killeen. 714 miles in 2 days was a nice test run for the KLR. I was pretty impressed with how she handled dirt and Hwy. Kinda top heavy for a dirt bike but you just respect that girth.
